If we have all strong to medium strength programs, there will be tons of parity, poor records and the league will be panned as weak. I think that would have been true ten and maybe even five years ago, but the media and therefore the tournament committee is now aware of things like Sagarin and Ken Pomeroy. League strength comes from OOC games, then position within the league comes from intra-league games. In that sense, the article by Nate Silver about bringing in the best teams available is correct - the trick is knowing who will be the best non-FBS teams over the next decade. A couple of other thoughts: - Gonzaga is the biggest prize for the available Pacific time zone teams, and this is in no small part the result of ESPN needing content for late games on the West coast. Having the Zags alone, with a 16- or 18-game conf. season would mean only 8 or 9 late games during conf. play. If the league wants to go national, I think you have to add a travel partner for Gonzaga as much for TV content as travel costs.
- I don't think it can be overstated how important it would be for Provy and St. John's to make the leap, and that right quick. The Friars seem to have the talent in place and a nice coach to start winning a lot of game next year, but I've just got a bad feeling something will go horribly wrong (mass transfers, scandal, perpetual injuries). I think there are enough media members in New York who still remember St. John's glory days, along with the easy sell of the "underdog league," that some big wins by the Redmen would really get the hype machine going - and help keep the conference tournament in MSG or Barclay's.

One of my main takeaways from last night was from watching the bench play defense.
Bowen and Ayegba show good effort but both tend to get lost in the scheme. I wonder if they would be okay playing with the other four starters, getting lots of help to know where to go.
Domingo looks like he can become a plus-defender by watching and emulating Whittington/Porter. Seems to have the desire and skill, just plays defense like a freshman.
Watching DSR on defense makes me sad.
And on Hopkins, in the early games the team had its biggest drop-off in def. efficiency when he wasn't on the floor. So Coach may be willing to live with the offensive hit for the defensive gain. He was a net plus before the weekend games.

Didn't they used to give away tickets to some area high schools?

I'm still wondering if any other Hoya in III's era has ever had back-to-back 20 points plus games. Well, Henry Sims scored 20 and 22 in the BET last year. Jason Clark also scored 20+ pts in the last two games at Maui.

Could someone who follows this a lot more closely than me explain if there is an "optimal" number of football teams in the new super-conferences?
I think I've read that it's expected to eventually shake out into four 16-team conferences, but I'm not clear why that would be, or why 14 teams - what the Big 10 will soon have - isn't as stable.

I could be wrong, but I am not sure he is a Georgetown fan who actively roots for us. I believe his BIAH co-blogger, Troy Machir, a member of a longtime Georgetown family, better fits that description. Dauster does seem to appreciate the Hoyas, though. Yeah, I think Rob is a UConn guy, but also Big East generally. As I recall, he was (is?) tending bar in DC while working towards his break into mainstream writing, so he's seen a lot of the Hoyas.

So is the next step to complete the full building plan for approval?

we obviously operate in the gray areas--JT Jr. is used as an effective extra recruiter, more or less. He's our answer to worldwide wes in that way. That's a gray area with regard to NCAA rules. However, there's been no evidence that we're operating in the more morally ambiguous regions of using money to lure players or families, of manipulating and hiding academic problems and/or drug abuse, or of being willfully ignorant when such things are happening. In cases where that was potentially an option, relationships have died off (see: Curtis Malone). Actually, JT3 did play in the "gray area" with regards to Malone: he hired David Cox (perhaps as a quid pro quo for Austin Freeman?). As RDF can elaborate to a far greater extent than I, hiring Cox was a disaster and likely a lesson learned.

I have this vague recollection of Coach Thompson sending Hollis to the scorer's table to check in, then pulling him back during his first semester at school. Did I dream that? As others have said, if Hollis will graduate this May there should be no expectation that he'd return for another season. Darrel Owens was the exception, and he went into sales rather than pro ball after graduation.

Had this appeared in the New York Times, the story undoubtedly would have said, "Syracuse, the chief rival of Georgetown, which gained notoriety for recruiting Marc Egerson, who had seven Fs on his transcript, and a neighbor of Binghamton, which hired Kevin Broadus, who recruited Egerson to Georgetown, ..." Pay the man, Shirley.

Game recap is up, with an absolutely stunning statistic about halftime deficits. Um, is it stunning? I have no idea. Do you know what other Big East teams' records are under similar circumstances?

Which means that Andre Drummond can play the second semester without going to a single class then leave for the draft, and UConn will receive no penalty.

I'm not sure Hopkins has been on the floor with Sims all season -- and if so, it's been for far less than 1 mpg. Sims and Hopkins played together for one possession against DePaul. Hopkins came in for Lubick with 8:44 left in the first half, after the Blue Demons called a 30-sec timeout. Your Hoyas lineup: Clark--Hopkins--Sims--Thompson--Whittington. DePaul scored, Jason Clark committed a turnover, then Porter came in for Sims. That's the only time they've been on the court together since conference play started. Thank you, thank you. Don't forget to tip your waitress.
