Since we now have the first news source report that Georgetown, Providence, Villanova, DePaul, St. John's, Seton Hall and Marquette have informed the Big East that they have voted to leave the conference: USA Today - Mark Blaudschun: Big East's Catholic member schools to leave conference It seems a good enough time to start a new thread discussing what happens next. NOTE: If anyone would like one of their posts moved from the now-locked thread to this one, send me a PM and I will accomplish that for you. Alternatively, you can copy and paste.

I didnt count as a reliable source Dan? Im taking my ball and going home... I was about to go back and copy your posts over... Also note this vote was first reported before the USA Today article here this afternoon by NBITYYR.Ive been told its official. As of 10 minutes ago the Catholic 7 have left the conference. Details of withdrawal or dissolution still coming... Im told Creighton is at the top of the invite list, alongside Butler, Xavier and St. Louis. With VCU and Dayton close behind. This is obviously a very fluid situation. Still so many options on the table. Lawyers already hammering through docs to determine if its worthwhile to fight to keep branding of Big East name. Will Memphis/Temple be open to joining in all non-FB sports (Cinci and Uconn seem resigned to staying with also rans in hopes of jumping ship soon)? Is a national conference sustainable? Which supposedly is what MSG agents are pushing for. Either way, the MSG contract will be voided. MSG is "most open" to hosting the tournament of a new national conference's tournament. To clarify from earlier. The 7 told Aresco via conference call earlier today that they were officially leaving. The question that remains is if they do it via withdrawal or vote to dissolve conference. The auto bid is not at issue. With 7 schools tied together, the auto bid remains either way.

I'm good with EVERYTHING that's gone down in the last 48 hours.
This is a good day for Gtown hoops for one reason: We finally took control of our own destiny.
I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees.
We will have a good conference, a good TV deal and continue to be Gtown hoops, a national program with a national name
HOYA SAXA!!!

From the old thread....SDSU cannot be a hoops-first school. They made a reckless move for the football team to join the BE leaving hoops in the lurch. It means NOTHING that currently their basketball team is much better and the new arena looks much better full than their NFL stadium does with 20K. I'm from San Diego....SDSU will ALWAYS be a football school. Not so Memphis and Temple.
This is what I'd like to see that might be reasonable:
BE 7 Temple (posting $25M bond as exit fee) Memphis (posting $25M bond as exit fee) Butler Xavier Creighton VCU Dayton
No divisions. No schools that could ever be considered footbal schools. No time zones to the left of Marquette. New name...Big City or something. Tourney at MSG.

I asked this earlier...If the BE was a basketball conference that lost its way with football, why don't we just remove the three remaining football schools and not admit the schools coming on board?? Seems to be easier than jumping through all these hoops. Can we vote to remove schools and tell the other ones to bugger off? Then we can keep assets, name, auto bid, MSG, $$$.

Just can't afford not to take Memphis and Temple who have ZERO flight risk. They are too good not to take given that they ain't going anywhere. That's it- no SDSU, no Uconn, no Cincy....two schools are never going to drive anything in a league where they will be out-numbered 12-2.

NBITYYR, what are the timelines for this basketball super conference. Would it be as early as next season?

Football superconferences would be more appropriate. But in next 18 months.

I would think that's what is essentially what they want to happen.... "dissolve" the league meaning kicking everyone out and then hopefully keeping memphis and temple and adding whoever

But can the basketball schools do this??

JTIII is on the record saying it would only take 3 phone calls once the decision had been made. now we get's to see whose on the receiving end of the calls.
Count me among those (relatively few) who think this is a long overdue, and very positive maneuver. We have a product that makes sense, and that we can build a business around.
High-level basketball creates television money, not vice-versa. This conference, if constituted correctly, will thrive.

If you told me 16 months ago that Georgetown would vote to dissolve the Big East in December 2012, I would have had a minor meltdown. Today? I'm happy.

not out of the woods yet...all these schools need to decide to join and we actually lock down a TV contract and the pod money etc etc. In THEORY this could work our really well. Guarded optimism at this point. Definitely more appealing than what we thought was possible months ago

But I am against it for financial reasons, I think it would be awesome from a fan perspective. You are right if the league can create compelling match ups every night than it can get the money (also attendance for GU, St. Johns, Nova would go up, which would help with money). Thats why I think 10 or 12 team is best. The best teams will meet each other twice every season. That means X-Butler, GU-X, GU-VCU, Butler-VCU, etc. will all happen TWICE a season. Thats nuts. Thats like a CBB fan's wet dream.

Never liked the Catholic bball league when people first threw around the idea because there was still hope for other options.
As soon as UMCP decides to bolt, the floodgates opened for Lousiville, Rutgers and the endgame possibilities between the ACC and Big East completely changed.
Given the current landscape this is probably the best decision right now. I mean look at what the potential league would be:
Quality BBall programs with major history: Georgetown Marquette Villanova St.Johns
Butler Xavier Creighton
Memphis Temple
Up and Comers: VCU Dayton
Dregs: Providence Seton Hall Depaul
That's 10-11 seriously competitive programs year in and year out with only 3 bottom feeders.
Plus the potential "opportunity" of keeping UConn or Cincinnati because they have nowhere to go right now.
Sign me up for season tickets.
