Being thin at PG really kills this team, which more than any other team I can remember hunts their own shots and has trouble creating easy baskets/playing off one another.
You just arent going to win in the BE with a guard with 1 assist, high turnovers, and no scoring. I just don't see the dropoff between him and Beard, and I a not sure how Ewing thinks playing him 4min in a game will help anyone (although we dont see practices, I also think we have enough actual live games to make some judgements on Beard).

Can we talk about Kaiden, and how to get him on track?
He is shooting 16% for 2 pt range in conference, 27% from 3. On high usage. He as 0 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, which for someone who we have gotten on for lack of effort, almost takes, um effort, to do through 3 games.
I know Jbill may not be ready...but also not sure the drop off is that bad. I dont think any player has played well in conference, but some are treading water relative to expectations, but I am interested to see how Kaiden plays once Carey is back, and how he can get back to doing what he does well, shoot - but also contribute in other ways when shot is not falling.

People wanted 5th year option seniors to not come back so the new kids on the block could "not be stunted in their development/go through growing pains". Well, now we have the space for the development with them gone, but you just can't expect same level of play (and the level of play last year wasn't overall great either).
So I am not surprised by the current record, just disappointed by some lack of fundamentals still (cutting, shot selection, defense awareness, etc). I still cant quite tell what we do on offense, and thats not good, and commentator said that in last game. Rice perplexes me, as does Aminu pulling a Wahab and once he gets the ball and collapses defense he doesnt look for the easy assist (although to be fair teammamtes need to anticipate it too. He did seem to concentrate on passing it out at end of last game which I appreciated. Dante has not been strong this year overall, which really puts a lot of pressure on the new guys to perform even better.
We dont really have a tall well-rounded wing, but otherwise some pieces of talent. I think if Jbill steps up a lot more in conference play we will be much better off but that is a lot to ask.

"Guys come out of high school vastly underrated all the time and end up at smaller programs despite their capabilities being overlooked by the Big Boys."
Case in point - Keegan Murray who will likely be an All American / drafted high this year, and had only one D1 offer. It doesnt happen all the time, but often enough that we can't discount a player merely by their high school offers.

Watched the game last night - Otto again was high impact in the 19 minutes he had, including back to back steals, timely 3 pters, great rebounding..
Onto Omer - He seemingly grabbed every board out there (17) although less of the tenacious type than Ottos - but he did a good job using his height advantage and positioning. He is only person do what he has his first 7-8 games since Shaq - rebounding machine.
Offensively, Heat kept trying to lob, but Warriors sniffed it out and picked it off Lowry several times. Omer missed his only 3, went 1-2 from line and was pretty limited offensively (or maybe timid) beyond his short hook - he has been making it several games in a row but this game he missed a 1 footer (as Ewing would say, dunk that!).
He also got scolded by his teammates for a defensive switch and had the ball picked off from him as last play of the game. Did a better job not fouling / contesting this game.
He looked fluid though, and in now way as the commentators said, should not have been drafted perhaps given his floor. In short, one can see him carve out a long career perhaps. He will need to add more variety to his game (given defense he has been limited) if he wants to see more $$, but with more coaching/time he has tools.
One has to remember he is only 8 starts or so into his career - and already is top 10 for his debut class in terms of win shares and I think top 5 in rebounds.
It will be interesting to see Garza vs Omer in 2 years and where they are in terms of trajectory.

Well, it may be the only time to say this, but Nova has a worst advanced rating / on the court product then us, since Dec 5th, using his metrics so we share that company

I agree, it was a good sign when the players knew where to be, they scored, especially out of timeouts. I think what we saw of Dante last season may be a microcosm of what we see this year out of freshmen - glimpses, but it coming together much more end of season. I agree while we have some upperclassmen that they are a not playmakers, more high level role players, and thus playing with freshmen may magnify this and we need to push through.
Patrick Baldwin Jr is not walking through that door - and even he is shooting 39% from the floor this season with more turnovers than assists.

Still leading the league in turnovers, could be better on offensive glass and creating own shots/getting to rim, but expect him to see some time in NBA this season - Pistons could use some outside shooting (dead last in league) and PF Grant may get traded.
One does have to remember there is a gap between G league and NBA - Garza and Omer really effective there but tougher to make impact in NBA. Mac is putting up 50% from field 43% from 3% and like 5-8 assists a night and not sure he has a spot in NBA without much more nuance to his game/consistency.
The good thing is though, the players Pickett is in company of, all have been up to the league at some point, even if journeymen - nice to see the hard work pay off and there is always the chance he can carve out a impact like Depauls' Strus has had in Miami - went for 24 points last night, good role player - and the production of the Warriors bench shows on a good team G league players who even with flaws who know their strengths/has seasoning can thrive.

This board has high expectations for a team that plays so many new players/freshmen. Our alpha is a sophomore who really only figured it out end of last season. I for one feel like we need to be realistic in terms of the team we have and judge Ewing against it.
Ewing has had good players (Pickett went to NBA, Wahab was a coveted transfer, Akinjo has led several good teams, Mac is at least putting up numbers in G league) and towards the end of several seasons we did see players like Pickett/Dante/Bile take steps forward.
As a coach, the biggest things for me have been keeping the team / composition chemistry consistent (huge question mark for me so far, and whether you blame Ewing, luck or players probably factors into your grade), the coach's system and players adoption (the offense coordination seemed very low yesterday, a lot of trying to just make shots then get good shots), recruiting (I think he has at least gotten us some good pieces to work with), and defense/heart/effort (I think we have been better on the latter than the former).
Throw in a inconsistent roster with a few overly inconsistent upperclassmen over the years, its been really frustrating to try to judge...between pandemic and transfers and being new to college coaching, Ewing is looking to coach his vision of a team still I imagine as well. I am interested in how he takes the pieces he has this year and what the result will be.
I think we can agree being a .500 team with this team in a decent BE is actually both an accomplishment for this year and a disappointment overall and both can be true.

Very efficient player when he plays - his effective FG % for players with at least 400 games played and 1 3PT / game is Top 20 in NBA history, ahead of Durant and Klay Thompson. He hopefully can have a long career like Kyle Korver, with health maybe Ariza (3 and D) even if he isn’t a Max player.

Austin Reaves who lakers fans feel is more likely to be signed is shooting 29% and 16% from 3. He is 3 inches taller than Mac, agree with sentiment if he was taller he would get a much longer look/leash.
Main issue is unless the team has good spacing Mac can’t create his own shot sometimes/shoot over people in a halfcourt - if you watch a McBride who is similar size but longer arms he’s been successful this SL just making quicker decisions and letting it fly with accuracy - Mac has to get more respect for his outside shot to get options to be creative and use his go forward speed.

Lou Williams is 6’1 and a career 42% shooter, 35% from 3. And still playing at 35. I think Mac can make the league. He can’t change his lack of length but his greatest weakness I think is shot selection. I think he can make improvements on some things with coaching. That said, he is definitely more of a bench player, and I think he will need to take the Yurt route.

He’s injured that’s why. They bought him in at key moments though.

If you are hanging your hat on points? Probably 20k. I think there are only three players who have that mark and not in hall of fame. Antwan Jamison only player with that mark and 8k rebounds. Grant Hill had 17k points.

So out of Green Hibbert and Otto, which (NBA)career arc would you prefer?
One made an all star (and parks and rec appearance) and helped coin verticality.
One made the most playoff appearances and points.
One made the most money.
