How good a 3PT shooter is he? Here's my borderline "hot taek" on Kaiden Rice...is he really that different from Trey Murphy? Now no, I don't think Rice is suddenly going to be a first round pick in the NBA draft. But I think he showed what can happen when you're getting better quality shots in a lower usage role. Murphy also grew to 6'9 so could be credible defending the 4 position. That's still an open question for me on Rice. If he can play small ball 4 I'm suddenly really excited about his prospects Trey Murphy (sophomore @ Rice): 36% (68-188) on a 20% usage rate (88% of his 3s were assisted) Trey Murphy (junior @ UVa): 43% (52-120) on a 17% usage rage (94% of his 3s were assisted) Kaiden Rice (sophomore @ The Citadel): 35% (60-171) on a 20% usage rate (93% of his 3s were assisted) If I squint...those sophomore numbers don't look terribly different? Now the flipside is I conveniently ignored Kaiden's junior and senior years. I think that was simply a function of being forced into too high a usage rate and difficult shots. Look at the senior year numbers: Kaiden Rice (senior @ The Citadel): 32% (71-220) on a 22% usage rate (81% of his 3s were assisted)
That 81% number of his 3s being assisted is crazy low. And i think that comes through when looking at the highlight reel. The quality of shot was just so difficult but the release was quick and looked the part of a good shooter. Now part of this is going to require adjustments on his end in terms of understanding what is a quality shot at this level, but if he's willing to be a spacer and play off Dante / Aminu / Riley penetration, I think his numbers will look much better and could push the 37-38%. Finding time at the 3 will be really crowded but there's definitely a spot for him and I'd think one of him or Carey should be on the court most of the time.

Do you mind doing a comparison with Carey? I am not sure where to get the information. Thank you. I hope I am not asking too much.

And it's a great point because we literally saw the impact with Carey last year. I pulled these from barttorvik.com. If you play around on the player pages there's some extra detail etc. Don Carey (sophomore @ Siena): 38.2% (55-144) on 20.6% usage (65.5% of 3s assisted) Don Carey (junior @ Gtown): 45% (40-89) on 14.9% usage (75% of 3s assisted) So similar story, more catch and shoot 3s, lower usage, higher shooting %. I'll admit it's a little jarring how low even Carey's % of 3s assisted numbers were compared to Murphy and even Rice. Hopeful with more drivers on the team this year that will open up some quality looks for our shooters

Going to be very interesting to see the numbers from both this year, with our additional slashers.

High praise for Kaiden. Shouldn't Carey also be on that list?

I’m guessing it’s a list of made 3-pointers last season.

I’m guessing it’s a list of made 3-pointers last season. Give that Rice came from Citadel, which has a blistering pace, the stat is largely meaningless. He shot 34.5%, though, which isn't bad considering the high volume. You'd hope that with less usage his percentage would go up, though facing better defenses could counteract that.

Some Rice takes:
1) I like the #11 in white…Anthony Jones memories.
2) Early season games with this team w be huge, particularly for K. Rice. Shooters need to ring the bell early, especially w new teams.
3) If K. Rice is a knock down shooter this team is going to contend for the regular season BE title. He won’t need to hoist the volume he did last year but if he can knock down open 3’s this offense w be tough to stop. The ability to get tot he hole and or into the lane w be a strength for this team. A forward w good size that drains open 3’s is exactly the weapon the Hoyas need.

I was so sad when he transferred. I thought that was the end of the Hoyas or at least we would take a big hit because of his transfer

Quite the statement from Ewing after the Sienna game: "Ewing and Rice had a discussion after the Hoyas’ second game, a win over American that saw Rice miss all seven of his three-point attempts and finish with just two points. Rice, who averaged 17.6 points last season for The Citadel and reached double digits in all 25 games he played, was disappointed in his play. “He’s an elite shooter,” Ewing said. “I’ve had the opportunity to play against guys that were elite shooters: Chris Mullin, Larry Bird, Reggie Miller. He’s up with those guys.“One of the things I keep telling them is that those guys worked on their game every day. He works on his game, and he believes in that shot. When we watched tape on him last year, I’m like, we have to get him.” www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/11/19/georgetown-siena-graduate-transfers/

I hope this game sets him into his groove and he stays there! That was a damn impressive shooting performance. With his size, maybe some of the dawg energy from the rest of the team will encourage him to be a strong rebounder too - just gotta get after em!
