Below are lists of all the players I know of that came to MM last year and you can definitely see the importance of this event to recruiting. The last two yrs have been outstanding - any word on what HoyaBlue or any other groups are planning for this year - any surprises - An Iverson/Mourning etc... appearance would be nice, but having Roy unveil his jersey on the wall would be pretty great also (hoepfully his NBA schedule allows it). Bascially just wondering if the planning started yet?
2008: Greg Monroe, Chris Braswell; Henry Sims; Jason Clark; Renaldo Woolridge; Gus Gilchrist
2009: Hollis Thompson; Isiah Armwood; Karron Johnson; DeShonte Riley; Terrell Vinson
2010:Tyler Thorton; Jason Morris; Markel Starks; Eric Johnson; Josh Hairson

Not good news - Tranghese is by far the best commissioner of the major conferences.

I like this idea a lot better than retiring numbers - not sure Verizon would let us put all these banners up.
I would add Jeff Green to that list. Even though he only played 3 years - he is going to graduate and in terms of most important players to the program he has got to be in the top 5 - maybe number 2.

I have read on some other boards that people from DC Assault did not want Jeff to sign with Falk or something along those lines. Does anyone know anything more about this?

Actually, unless I'm missing something the Maryland scout board didn't say anything terrible. In general, if you read that Maryland board regularly you will notice how they bash their own players excessively and any player who doesn't decide to play at Maryland either doesn't have the grades or is getting paid from somewhere else. I was just really surprised to see some people on this board hating on Vern especially without even knowing his reasons for leaving.

Go check out the Maryland Scout Board - you would fit in well over there.

Vern,
Thanks for being the first McD AA to committ to the program in a long time. Thanks for being part of our first final 4 team since 1985. Thanks for playing your heart out in the limited minutes you received. Thanks for doing your best to keep us in the game against Davidson with Roy out. Thanks for acting with class on and off the court. I wish you were going to be part of the team next year, but wherever you go I'll root for. Thanks.

If that is the case then I apologize to SFHoya - that is exactly the kind of initiative I am looking for. I'm just venting my frustration over people complaining without offering/working towards reasonable solutions.

I was responding to the idea that the athletic dept. or hoop club doesn't care about the alumni. I don't know anyone in the athletic dept. personally and I only donate a small amount of money yet everytime I've called someone there they have been very helpful.
My frustration is that when something doesn't go exactly as someone wants they whine on this board about it or threaten to stop donating. This is our school and our basketball team if you really care so much why don't you try calling the athletic dept/hoops club and proposing alternate solutions. Do you really think the hoops club or AD thought to themselves - hey lets have the banquet on a weekday to screw those not in the local area or didn't consider multiple dates for the event.

"There's simply no reason but charity to continue to support the program financially for someone too far from DC."
I thought the purpose of donating to the Hoops Club was to help the basketball program not to get something out of it. If they had the banquet on Saturday would you still complain? My guess is yes. Then you would say why doesn't the hoops club/athletic dept. send me a free hat, why don't they get me tickets etc.
I always think its strange when people think a donation entitles them to something. All it should entitle you too is the satisfaction of giving.
Also saying that they don't care seems ridiculous. It seems like they care a lot. They spend the whole season trying to bend over backwards for spoiled alumni.

I think he is 23. Sounds like he is a tremendous talent and will be a starter from day 1, but this is not a good strategy for the Terps. There are so many great high school players in the area that Gary should be trying to bring in instead the terps seem to pursuing 3 juco's Evans, Bobby Maze and a forward named Bowman. Let the terps fill up all their roster spots and we can offer our schollies to top area high school talent.

In the New HoyaTalk Tradition Thread some people came up with a way for people to donate $35 to the basketball program which would cost the individual no money and only a few minutes of time. Over $400 has been raised so far which is great but considering the number of people that post on this board that is pretty poor. I know I had some trouble registering with Revolution Money because of an issue with my account, so maybe people have been trying to do it and haven't been able to or maybe there are other reasons that I can't think of that people can't do it. But if you simply just don't want to take the time to do it - i don't understand it. Please PM Tbird your email address and make a difference. Has this thing died - any updates? 3,000 members X $35 could have been over $100,000 for the hoops club.

I guess that is my point - why are some coaches considered dirty and others considered clean when most do the same exact stuff. Everytime Calipari is mentioned on the board the same descriptions come up "sleazeball" "dirty" etc... But is there any evidence he is different than 95% of the other Div. I coaches. I bring up Coach K again - Chris Duhon's mom got a job thru a Duke Booster. Seems like all these coaches are the same but for some reason Calipari takes more heat than others.

But I don't think Calipari was ever linked to the payments - Camby took them on his own from an agent. Didn't the same thing happen at Duke with Maggette taking illegal payments. It could happen to any coach - you can't prevent a player from choosing to take $$.

What has Calipari done that suggests the season would be invalidated. Never heard of any recruiting violations or any kind of violation. What is the difference between Calipari and most Div. I head coaches.
