roy showed up just fine, but the refs didn't allow him to play. he is 3-3 from the field in the box score (i had him missing a 3 ptr too). all of the offensive fouls called against him and all of the offensive fouls called against us in the second half were crap. while yes, we would have won without those five calls/turnovers and with roy being more aggressive, we still should have won had we controlled the turnovers within our control. plenty of errant passes in the second half. guards failed to feed the post when roy did get position. steph curry made big plays despite pretty good defense on him.
i understand that we were an average rebounding team b/c of some athletic limitations as compared to some of our opponents--most obviously Pitt and Memphis (who both shredded us on the glass), but there are
three big coaching decisions/tactics that confused me this season (and also showed up today): (1) inability to feed the post --numerous times roy got position yet our guards couldn't find a way to feed him the ball; this happened numerous times today (2) inability to cut down on turnovers, handle press (this improved only in BET v. Villanova after numerous teams had pressed against us) (3) unwillingness to attack the basket after beating the press --towards the end of the game today, pat had the ball after we beat the press with just pat, roy and one 6'6" davidson defender under the basket, but pat just pulls the ball back
as we've noted, most of us didn't think this team had enough to win a nat'l championship, and i'd agree. while we certainly had enough to beat davidson, it is worth noting that despite the good talent on this team, we should remember that none of jon, roy, or jessie were big-time recruits. they have become great players anyway and that's why they hold a special place in our hearts. as JTIII says, we're just in the beginning stages of where he wants the program to be. i imagine this includes not only things like facilities, but also personnel.
i'm very excited about next year's team, and hope chris, dajuan, and austin put in the work over the summer to become elite players next year. they all have the talent and ability to be very special.

have you guys watched carolina this year? despite all the talent, they're not that good. they only play defense or play hard when they have to. until last week, their best win was against clemson, who they would have lost to both times if clemson could hit one more free throw in each game. clemson and duke are the only top 25 teams they've played all year. ty lawson is not explosive or quick at all right now. he went 1-8 yesterday. ellington has been pretty inconsistent too and seems to shoot poorly when you put a long defender on him. yeah, they would kill us on the offensive glass, but i'll take my chances with that. kansas and ucla have more talent and better coaching. i'll take carolina in a heartbeat over those two

i love rivers defense and his length is particularly troublesome. i have more confidence in chris in creating turnovers or getting steals if we need that in a late game situation. in the memphis game, chris picked derrick rose's pocket clean when he tried to cross CW over.
i also love chris's dribble penetration which adds a new dimension offensively. i haven't seen us drive and kick almost at all this season until chris did it a few times yesterday, and against a team with good guards

scottie wanted nothing to do with chris yesterday. chris got low had his hands out and scottie never tried to drive on him whereas scottie did go at jon and jessie. maybe scottie has bad memories from trying to score on chris when they played on boo williams together. and as barker noted yesterday holding a schollie for chris was the reason scottie isn't a hoya

khalid el amin. don't know how much of this, or any of this, story is true, but what i heard was that on his visit, JT and el amin are driving to campus in JT's s-class. JT asked him what it would take for him to come to georgetown, and el amin says that he could deal with one of these (the car). jt told him to get out of the car on the key bridge

the ohio state second round win in the '06 tourney. going into ohio and destroying the big ten champion at what was a home game. also, roy's coming out party, his first (?) 20 point game...

in terms of tournament preparation, tennessee is a better series than memphis because tennessee runs flex. i can't think of any bigeast teams that run flex (or any team we played last year), and that showed when we struggled against bc's flex cuts and back screens in the first half of the second round. maryland, tennessee, gonzaga, wisconsin, bc all run a variety of flex so it's a useful offense to have experienced come tournament time. memphis' brick-and-board offense requires little preparation--it only 'works' because they have good players and athletes.

all great moments...
i understand there might be a bias toward game winning/tying shots and three pointers, but big roy didn't get much love in the above plays. some great roy moments:
--v. UNC: the drop-step, spin and dunk on reyshawn terry was a huge play with almost 2 mins to go to cut the UNC lead to 5.
--v. UNC: roy's opening bucket, in which he dribble drove and spun move on hansbrough all the way from the three point line.
v. BC: the pass for the ewing dunk-and-one was pure class.
--v. Oregon: roy sprinting back on an oregon fastbreak to smack an oregon layup off the backboard.
-v. UNC: Roy's block of reyshawn terry in OT
v. Pitt in BET final: Roy's game-long domination of Gray
v. Vandy: in the last four minutes j-wall had a huge long two from behind the free throw line that he created off an ashanti-style step back j.

big ups to the athletic dept for so many student seats at the final four. i would hope that with that many student seats, the dept also reserved 25 good seats for hoya moms and dads.

good ideas about the ticketing process. can we make sure we hold muir's feet to the fire over player parents sitting in the upper deck? that's an absolute joke. i hope they are all seated in the lower level. if it were okay w/ the ncaa, could HB or HHC start a student/alum fund to help out the parents, maybe over the course of the year, but particularly during the ncaas? if a couple hundred students and alums gave $5, it could help most of the families in need see their kids play from a good seat. it kills me that roy's parents were way up top on sunday. someone can start a group on facebook: "students helping jeff green's mom sit in the lower level at the meadowlands/final four"

I have Comcast Digital and, as noted above in this thread, many CBS affiliates, including Atlanta, are multicasting the "other" game on another channel on digital cable for free. Check the website for your local cbs station.
Our sunday game would almost certainly be the later game if carolina advances. Gtown-UNC is the regional final that CBS execs are salivating over and they get more viewers nationally in the later time slot. Even with a game v. USC, there's still a chance it could beat out Florida and UNLV or Oregon for the later slot.

Lost against Vandy down the stretch. How about last year’s Illinois game? We scored 13(!!!) points in the first half!!! They were miserable. The Providence game to start January at which we were down at the half? And yet by February and March, the Hoyas were one of the 10 best teams in the country.
One of the more puzzling refrains on this board is how much we are missing Ashanti, Bobo, and Owens. I miss them, too. By February and March, they could shoot, pass, cut, and play great perimeter D. But don’t trick yourself into thinking these guys were shooting lights out last November and December—these guys combined were a sterling 8-24 against Illinois. Until his senior year, Ashanti had always been an erratic shooter, and that terrific step back jumper didn’t emerge until conference play. Last year, JTIII proved himself very capable of teaching things like shot selection, passing, breaking down a zone, and defense over the course of a season. In every interview, JTIII says stuff like we have a lot to learn this season, etc. I see no tremendous talent gap b/t Owens/Ashanti/Bowman and Egerson/Summers/Sapp/Tyler to suggest that something close to last year’s significant in-season improvement can’t happen again this year.
The guys I really miss are Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert a la Ohio State—those guys were beasts. Those guys shouldn't need "learning time" anymore. Jeff has temporarily become Georgetown’s Rudy Gay/Landon Donovan. It’s frustrating that they have not played more aggressively/better, but does anyone doubt that they will start playing like they can at some point?
How about Saturday? The only thing worse than our offense on Wednesday was Duke’s offense on Tuesday against Indiana. McRoberts is really slow and tentative. Paulus is slow and can’t shoot. DeMarcus Nelson is the big concern—Sapp and Egerson will both take turns shutting him down, and that Scheyer guy can shoot too.
Go Hoyas, dunk the devils in Cameron!!! dunk all over mcboberts!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Even Luke Winn takes a jab at the fan behavior: "Despite being showered with raucous chants of "a--hole" by the Georgetown crowd for the remainder of the game, Vasylius rebounded to score 14 key second-half points and play a major role in the win." sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_blogs/basketball/ncaa/occasional Edited and bull chants are fine, but really let's be more creative. wouldn't some borat-inspired kazakhstan chants be hilarious anytime we play someone with an eastern european player? yeah, and you fans who leave the game early are crap fans. cubs fans fill up wrigley everyday even when the team is crap. i went to many games in the esherick era that I expected us to lose, so how about staying 10 minutes to support your top 25 team. On a happier note, did anybody see or talk to Luke Dub at the game?

can't wait for the dookies to play us man to man so that jeff and roy can score all over mcbob.
Big Ticket Most importantly, we've got our first head-above-the-rim dunker since Demetrius Hunter! woohoo!! i really enjoyed macklin's missed followup dunk where he was way up there. mcbob or mabye zoubek will make for a nice goofy dude for vernon to throw down on national tv in a few weeks. III's early comments on Macklin and the Bilas/Katz/Davis articles gave me the impression Macklin was not going to be a big contributor this year. they implication was that vernon was raw, but he looked pretty skilled out there tonight. his handle and passing impressed me and he had a nice touch on a little hook in the lane. i was really expecting he would only be providing defense and rebounding for about 10-15 mins this year, but it looks like he has the tools to contribute more.

also, i don't think our lease w/ Verizon Center permits us to get friday or esp saturday night games. they almost always save those for the caps and 'zards. can anyone remember a saturday night game at MCI?

looks like all the sites have already been chosen for the whole year. while it'd be great to have a gameday for uconn at gtown in march (it's definitely a bigger game than marquette-pitt), i'm happier being the cbs afternoon game. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_GameDay_(basketball)#2007

yeah. per the link above, bilas definitely is a believer in JTIII and was last march. in addition to projecting us in the elite 8 last year, he was raving about our team defense and passing during the big east tournament last year. he also has a huge man-crush on jeff green. Bilas is probably the most objective commentator on ESPN and offers the best insight, so stop hating on him b/c he's a dookie.
