I have not asked anyone for their autograph since hearing Coach talk about that one year at basketball camp.

Saw this in another thread and had to comment:
From Online Chat with John Feinstein "College Park, Md.: John, What are the chances of getting a true Metro-area round-robin, either involving the current BB&T or involving that and some independent games? I've heard recently that Georgetown was interested in playing but that now Maryland is not interested in playing them or other locals. It would seem a sure crowd-pleaser to have some combination of UMd, Georgetown, GW, AU, Howard, GMU, and Navy playing every year. Any insight?
John Feinstein: I agree, that would be great. The problem is not Md. Md. has cooperated from day one with the BBNT. Georgetown did finally express interest this winter after 10 seasons of not being interested in competing in an event that benefits local charities, but then made so many unreasonable demands, that the Children's Charity Foundation was forced to abandon the negotiations. We would all love to see a local tournament. "
If by unreasonable demands, he means having more than one day to decide, then he is correct. From what I hear, the tournament organizers aka Feinstein basically told us we were invited, take it or leave it, and do so right now. While we were very interested in getting involved, we were not going to be held hostage. Nice to see he frames us against Children's Charities, though.
I was at a charity event at American where he was the speaker, and I was at a table of strangers. At least 4 times during his speech he railed against Georgetown, framing us against the idyllic virtue of the Patriot League. As soon as the speech ended the entire table began apologizing to me, realzing that maybe he might just have an axe to grind.
He is a pompous jerk, and I promise myself I will not waste any more time thinking about him.

1993 vs. UTEP...
With seconds left in the first half, UTEP scores its 9th and 10th points- drawing a huge ovation from the crowd...
UTEP's point guard, an under 6 foot redhead named Gym Bice, inspires "Opie, Opie" chants everytime he touches the ball...
One of favorite Hoya games of all time because of the atmosphere. Hopefully tomorrow will be even better. Unfortunately I will be in front of the TV, not in the gym. Let us hear you, Hoya fans!
Any other memories of the Hoyas' pasting of UTEP?

Honestly, we should never rush the court...to me it's ok for a groundbreaking game- a major, major upset. It happens too often now, and we should never play a game where a win would be a major, major upset.
On a nother note, an Arizona high school student was paralyzed after injuring himself rushing the court. Really, think about all the emotion on the floor at the time, with a winning team, a losing team, and hundereds of over-excited (and possibly intoxicated fans). It surprises me that there have not been more problems, such at the Nebraska? football player that hit a fan who rushed the field. Assuming the SEC made serious recommendations to its member schools, as to how to prevent this, I applaud their move.

As much as I would love to, I don't know that I would call Chuck and Vic the best backcourt ever. But, for those of lucky enough to see them play together, it was damn entertaining. They had great chemistry, and I have never seen so many guard to guard alley-oops as I did that season.
That season ended with a lot of frustration, and a sustained dislike of Marcus Camby, but it was something special, and I look forward to our next run to the final 8...and beyond!

Great news!
Seems like a place to show some love to my boy Ya-Ya, '97's Big East Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the year.

It's one thing for a John Thompson, Dean Smith, or even a Jim Harrick-type to get back in the game. They would not take an assistants position. But Esherick? While I am sure he would prefer to find a job as a head coach- I know he has thrown his name into a few hats. But I could see him going to work for someone else again. I equate him with a George Blaney, or a Billy Hahn- what are they going to do- not coach?

Fred coached at Episcopal (a boarding school in No VA), where he coached Dean Berry, and and a former Hoya recruit, who thankfully chose UConn, Antric Klabier. Last year, he returned to coaching at Carroll, replacing longtime coach Carroll Holmes, who was still the AD. Fred resigned durring the season. His son plays for Maret, who just beat Sidwell Friends, whose coach, George Leftwich, former teammate of John Thompson, is leaving at the end of the year to become AD at Carroll.
Got all that?

Your roommates made up that term? That's good to know. I've wondered where it came from for the 15 years or so I've heard it on DC playgrounds. (tongue planted firmly in cheek)

Street & Smith is publishing a magazine with the top 100 College Basketball programs of all time. Hoyas rank......#21.
Criteria includes NCAA & NIT championships, appearances, conference titles, pro players, etc, with points subtracted for NCAA violations- last criteria is "mascot ferocity"
That has us 4th in the current Big East behind UConn, Syracuse, and St. John's. I can see trailing SJU & 'Cuse (not happy about it, but I understand their history), but I really don't see UConn as the greatest program in the history of the Big East, and one of the top ten in the country, historically.
BTW, Kentucky #1, UCLA #2

Curious that he was released in the first place. He was leading the league in assists for a bit. Anyone heard any stories?

The best written expression I ever saw at a Hoya game was from a certain "die-hard" from the late 90's. He was not the largest guy in the world, so for one of the ESPN Monday night tripleheaders, he painted across his torso...
"Small Chest, Big Monday"
It made the lead-in for Sportscenter that night.

I am all for having fun, supporting the Hoyas, and razzing other teams and coaches. The greatest thing I ever saw was when some of the late '60's alums who sat across fromt the scorer's tables wore clown caps (bald heads with orange frizzy hair) to a 'Cuse game. Boeheim saw them a started laughing. That is the point. It is supposed to be fun.
I know 99% of our fans are full of class and would not say anything objective. But remember there are people sitting around you. One of the great individual battles I ever saw was AI against, believe it or not, Danny Hurley. We won, and as Seton Hall ran off the court I tried to get Hurley's attention. As hr turned to me, and I started to tell him what a hell of a game he played, some jerk behind me let him have it. Hurley flipped "us" off. Who could blame him?
The biggest joke behavior from a coach came from Steve Lappas. They came in '96, both teams ranked- big time atmosphere. Someone in the front row of the student section, a rather large fan, started yelling, "Lappas, you rat- you look like a rat!" And he certainly does. Now this is minutes before the game starts. Lappas gets all his assistants attention, points at this student, and blows his cheeks up and holds his arms out, signifying that the student was fat. Maybe he one-upped this 20 year old, but I knew we would win when I saw this. We held Eric Eberz scoreless for the only time in his career, and we won going away.
There are fans with no class, coaches with no class, and players with no class- I am glad the Hoyas will continue to win and lose ( but mostly win) with class!

Fofana

Post by Hilltopper on Jan 7, 2005 10:04:14 GMT -5
Headed to Loyola- from the Baltomire Sun:
Hassan Fofana, the 6-foot-10 sophomore center who left the Maryland basketball team last month because he was unhappy with his playing time, has decided to transfer to Loyola, his guardian said last night.
"It just came down to that the person he trusted most was [Loyola coach] Jimmy Patsos," said Gary Gibbons, who lives in Weston, Mass., and has been Fofana's guardian for the past three-plus years. "It is a chance for him to play all the time and develop his skills, which is what Hassan really wants."
Patsos, a longtime assistant to Gary Williams in College Park and now the first-year coach at Loyola, was a key figure in recruiting Fofana to come to Maryland from Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia.
Patsos' coaching staff at Maryland includes former Terps Matt Kovarik and Terrell Stokes. Andre Collins, who transferred from Maryland to Loyola last year, will be eligible to play for the Greyhounds next season.
Gibbons said that he isn't sure when Fofana, who told Patsos of his decision last night, will sign a letter of intent, but the guardian said the player wants to enroll at the school for the spring semester. That means Fofana would be eligible to play in the second half of next season.
Gibbons said Fofana had been contacted by nearly 50 schools since he was given his release from Maryland, where he was averaging 2.0 points and 1.3 rebounds in 7.3 minutes a game.
Fofana narrowed his choices to Georgetown, La Salle and Loyola, and had visited each before choosing the Greyhounds.
