That's just a name my room-mates in college made up for people that either foul a lot or give vicious Hacks...
I was checking the box, and I noticed that he had 4 fouls in 16 minutes... lol!!!
I'm assuming he picked those up when the Hoyas were fouling down the stretch...

Come on man, the guy played a great game, and all you can come up with is that he is hack-box. Yet you can sing the praises of North Carolina players all day. How about commending Tyler on his best effort as a freshman. Hopefully, thats a bright sign of things to come. Plus, in the final minutes of the game, the Hoyas were intentionally fouling BC, but BC kept hitting their foul shots. But lets give a little credit to Tyler for a great game.

Had nothing to do with Tyler's play....Just fouls per minute... and like I said...he probably picked those up when the Hoyas were fouling down the stretch... I'm glad he picked up 4...a friend of mine told me a long time ago, "You can't take them home with you, so you might as well use them."

I'm going to get in trouble for this, but it actually is a HUGE deal for the Hoyas to have guys pick up relatively needless fouls early in a game or half. I was at the BC game and Tyler got all 4 of those fouls in the regular course of action in the game and not at the end.
As a team our strategy in general is to shorten the game...limit posessions...play good defense...hit some shots (mostly 3's) and win it in the 2nd half. Smart strategy when you really play only 7 guys.
By picking up fouls early we get killed in terms of other teams getting into the bonus before we do. It might not seem like much, but in conference games we are actually getting outscored 62.8 to 62.1 per game. Opponents of ours have shot 23 more free throws and made 23 more than us in just 8 games. Overall it's 55 more for the other team and 39 made over 19 games.
That's 4 more attempts per game and we don't shoot Fts too well (66% vs. 71%).
So those fouls we commit early in a half end up killing us later on. A lot of this could be attributed to our outside style and lack of a true inside game, but it's also from us fouling a little too much early in the game and half.

Tyler is a bit hacktastic. He had a great game, but that's four fouls quickly. That's something experience usually changes.
I agree that we can't afford to be a big hack team -- especially since we aren't really getting the turnovers aggressive D forces. That said, I've been impressed but the relative low level hackness of our D -- Jeff and Roy in particular have been in much less foul trouble than I expected.

Your roommates made up that term? That's good to know. I've wondered where it came from for the 15 years or so I've heard it on DC playgrounds. (tongue planted firmly in cheek)

Tyler was aggressive, no question. None of his fouls were any worse than the one where Jermaine Watson (Digger Phelps' "best 6th man in America") plowed his elbows into Jeff Green's face and bloodied Green's lip on a free throw rebound. Of course, that one wasn't called. Nothing like a home court call...

Tyler did randomly bump BC players on his way up court two times. Neither was called, but he quite clearly goes out of his way to make a little contact. One of the things Tyler clearly brings is toughness and physicallity, but he has to watch out for dumb fouls. Ramell picked up a couple pointless fouls in his time against BC too.

An interesting contrast in the same game was Nate Dornekamp, who as a senior has learned how to foul effectively and not get called.

BC was bumping and hand-checking cutters and guys coming around screens. It is hard to run the Princeton offense if the defense is allowed to make that much contact. I think Oral Roberts used a similar strategy. Crawford came in and made hard cuts anyway, got a few back door layups, and helped open up the offense. I'm not surprised it got a little chippy. Dornekamp was not hand-checking, he was shoving guards dribbling around screens. If Crawford gave some back, good for him.
