Just finished Chuck Klosterman's novel Downtown Owl. Strange book. Set in 1983 in a small North Dakota town. One of the characters, a high school basketball player, is excited to wear a t-shirt under his jersey to be like Patrick. From the book, "Mitch was, in fact, obsessed with the Georgetown Hoya basketball program. And that was, in fact, because the Georgetown Hoyas were the blackest people he had ever seen. Mitch's understanding of African-American culture was completely based on how Georgetown played defense. They were the only black people he knew."

Do we know who did the PA in his stead?

At the time, I remember hearing that he was a Georgetown lock. Not how it is portrayed in the article, but who knows? Certainly worth the read.

Looks like that Harlem Shake video was done by Abe Froman's grandson. Would he be the sausage prince?

R.I.P. to an important part of the Hoya family and our basketball tradition.

Well, since I said it was my favorite- not the best- it cannot be a poor example. Thanks for the input, though.
Obviously there are plenty of more obvious ones. I am in the crowd scene in Above the Rim so that is also a favorite. Pretty much everyone in that scene had Hoya connections. The two officials were Assistant AD Adam Brick and golf coach Tommy Hunter, both of whom were actual high school officials- very good officials, actually.

Lots to choose from. Many movies with Georgetown connections, but I have a subtle one. This song came up on shuffle the other day and I remembered how excited, as a young Hoya fan, I was the first time I saw this video back in the day.
If you don't want to listen to the entirety of a great song, skip to the 3:20 mark.

The first post made me think of garbage time some years later. Jerry Nichols goes 360. Sub is at the table before he hits the ground. And I remember James Reed airballing a breakaway layup.
But I think my favorite was a friend painting his chest, "Small Chest, Big Monday". I believe it led Sportscenter that night.
Best line was at the Hoya- UConn game in 96. Kevin McHale sat at the scouts' table right in front of student section. I was in the front row and a friend from Boston behind me asked to get an autograph for him. As he signed, McHale asked me what my major was. I said, "English- but I actually want to coach basketball." He hands me the paper back, looks up and says, "Good. Because you won't do anything with that English degree."

I am normally a nice person. But I love the fact that the U-S-U-C-K fans feel miserable right now. Great win...even if we should have fouled up 3. Hoya Saxa!

In Sleep Walk With Me, Birbiglia's great movie about his life with a sleeping disorder, there is a good amount of flashback to college, but its never mentioned or hinted that he is at gtown. Though his school is "not" Georgetown in the movie, he does a set on campus and there is a GUTS sign in the background. I thought that was the wink to crazy alums like me.

I have coached hoops for 17 years and I am incredibly reluctant to blame a loss on officiating, but there were two different standards on calls last night. Why? I am not going to theorize- I just know what I saw. There was a stretch where we were called for a ticky-tack. On our posses ion, Greg drives and is clearly displaced by Hulls- no call. Then another foul on Hoosiers' subsequent posses ion. Bad.
Did we lose because of this stretch or because of the officiating? No- we lost because the other team was lights out from 3, and we did not defend the 3 well last night. And because we did not finish well around the basket. And any number of other reasons. Does not mean we cannot be frustrated by what, to many of us, was uneven officiating?
Is it Tom Crean blaming a blowout loss on the flu? No- though I laughed early in the game when the announcers told us Zeller had been battling the flu lately. Crean sowing the seeds for an excuse if they lost.
Happy with the performance. Disappointed with the loss. Excited about this team.

You have to take that shot. May have been the best look they had the entire half.

As someone who grew up in DC before attending Georgetown, this is a sad day. Alums 50 and under had to be exposed to go-go while you were on the Hilltop. Whether you embraced it or not, I hope you realized how important the music is to the city. I believe go-go defines DC. And it all started with Chuck. Rest in peace and run joe! God bless you Chuck.
“It’s about love, the communication between performer and audience. When you’re on stage, the people put that love to you and you give it back. There’s no other music like it.”- Chuck Brown
