The Not Ready For The Not Ready For Primetime Players: 24 lesser-known comedy incubators[/u] 19. Georgetown University Harvard has long held a monopoly in the realm of smarty-pants universities that moonlight as comedy farm systems, but it’s no longer the only game in town. While typically known for churning out government and legal types (and the occasional NBA star), Washington D.C.’s Georgetown University is the alma mater of several of the biggest names in contemporary comedy: Stand-up Jim Gaffigan, Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney, The League’s Nick Kroll, and Sleepwalk With Me’s Mike Birbiglia are all former Hoyas who made careers in humor.

If true, it's obvious that none of the future Gaffigans, Mulaneys, Krolls, and Birbiglias post on Hoyatalk

I think Zulkey is a Hoya, not sure about any of the others, but I'm guessing that's where the Georgetown shoutout came from.

Rightfully deserved. Though that list is sort of odd in that most of those "incubators" dont exist anymore.
There are a number of other, more recent grads, who are in some way involved in comedy. Jack Stouf, who graduated in 2010, wrote for the Onion for a short time. He also was just involved in that dust up with the writer of the Oatmeal.
Gtown's comedy chops is little known outside of gtown and these alumni arent helping much at all. In Sleep Walk With Me, Birbiglia's great movie about his life with a sleeping disorder, there is a good amount of flashback to college, but its never mentioned or hinted that he is at gtown.
But I have heard Nick Kroll talk about it in an interview. And Birbiglia has performed at Gtown many times.

I remember walking though healy one day I think my junior year and GPB had a table and said hey do you want to go see a comic up in Gaston. I asked who it was and it was Mike Birbiglia. There had been no flyers up for this event at all. I was amazed there had been no announcement about it and was glad to go up stairs and watch the show. Gaston was maybe a third full. Birbiglia started out the show by saying: "I always dreamed of coming back to Georgetown and performing a sold out show, I guess a few more years away still." It was a great show, but it still surprises me that they did such a terrible job promoting a comic who had performed two specials on comedy central by that point and was an alumnus.

That's the case for most of the comedians who come to campus. I saw a few shows while I was in school and they got just as little publicity despite being *known* names.

If you haven't seen Mike Birbiglia's movie, Sleepwalk with Me, do yourself a favor and check it out. I think it's on Netflix.

Alison Becker is another GU alum who has been in a fair number of sitcoms and works with some of these other better known people - you might recognize her as Shawna Malwae-Tweep on Parks and Recreation. Conrad Mulcahy is another Georgetown alum (classmate of mine and Birbiglia) who is actually mentioned in the next (semi-related) section of that AV Club article for the Mulaney/Kroll office - I know he did Improv at GU but did not know he was still involved in comedy - the internet mostly shows him as writer for the NY Times. Finally, Bradley Cooper and Brit Marling are not comedians per se, but they have had some notable comedic roles and are also alums.
ETA: Can't believe I forgot Mitch Hurwitz, creator of Arrested Development and erstwhile Hoya. He is a different vintage than most of these guys, but if Gaffigan counts, he should too.

Though his school is "not" Georgetown in the movie, he does a set on campus and there is a GUTS sign in the background. I thought that was the wink to crazy alums like me.

I saw Birbiglia's first few gtown shows, and they weren't great honestly. It was all panda porn, jay-z rhyming, and destiny's child jokes (not exactly current even then). I was happy when they referenced how bad his first material was in his movie. His saving grace was his personality, which showed much more than his jokes early on...

Speaking of Bradley Cooper, he just got a nomination as best actor this year for the Oscars:
Best Actor In A Leading Role
Bradley Cooper, “Silver Linings Playbook”
Joaquin Phoenix, “The Master”
Daniel Day-Lewis, “Lincoln”
Denzel Washington, “Flight”
Hugh Jackman, “Les Miserables”

Watched it last night and I enjoyed it. Although I did fall asleep about 75% of the way though . Very surprised there was not at least another mention of Georgetown, about half the movie occurs around college and mentions it a few times.

If true, it's obvious that none of the future Gaffigans, Mulaneys, Krolls, and Birbiglias post on Hoyatalk But isn't Boz=Birbiglia Well, that's truly flattering, but if I ever got up on stage, it would be reminiscent of Sweet Dee Reynolds, not Mike Birbiglia. I'm afraid we share an alma mater, similar sleeping disorders and not much else.

The marketing of Kroll's show is surprisingly extensive around the interwebs...I've seen extended ads for his show on espn, deadspin and other websites.

I thought the pilot showed a lot of potential. I laughed out loud quite a few times tonight.

Kroll was the co-MC of Cabaret my junior year (2001). I was in the non-humor role of "trombonist". I believe he opened with Tom Jones' "Sexbomb".
