Props to the kid - stepped up big time and couldn't have been more clutch. Well done. I cant believe 4 people "liked" this post. Hopefully you will be big enough to come back and post this each time you are proven clueless about CBB guard play over the next 3+ years.

I'm excited to see Jamarko in the 2nd round of the BET. I have a feeling that getting past today's game will be huge for his confidence, he just needs to let the shots fly when they are there. Hopefully he loosens up a bit on offense. Let that open 3 fly! He did seem very reluctant to shoot open jumpers today. But the drives did help get MU get into foul trouble - the 3rd on Garcia late in 1st half was particularly helpful.

Lets get this out of the way quickly, because we have another game to focus on! - My concerns about Blair coming off the bench from a defensive standpoint were a non-issue because (1) in the first half, Wojo benched McEwen. No idea why, doubt it was to line up with Blair but it let Carey guard Elliot and then (2) in the 2nd half, Garcia started on bench because he already had 3 fouls. Blair otherwise was out there so it was less of an issue.
- Injury to John and foul trouble ultimately really hurt Marquette.
- That being said, the halfcourt offense without Blair is really a problem. You can go under Dante screens w abandon. Dumping the ball to Q vs. John wasn't going to work. And when John wasn't in he was doubled teamed. He is the engine for this team, the only person who can be a threat in pick and roll consistently to generate looks for others on the team. The offense really took off when he came in
- Carey deserves a shout out as well. The line might not look crazy, but his assists were critical, two were for dunks and one was a killer pass to Blair for 3
- Speaking of that pass to Blair, that stopped the run when it looked like Marquette was trying to get back in the game. Garcia ended up at center due to John injuries and foul trouble, and he scored 5 quick points on Wahab. Carey hits Blair in the corner for 3, Pickett drives to the hoop without a rim protector, and then Bile gets fouled after a turnover. That pretty much ended the run and the game
- Bile and Dante were fairly terrible on offense, and pretty spectacular on defense. 5 steals for Dante, 2 blocks for Bile. And sure, Marquette missed a few open looks in the beginning. But I saw a team running guys off the line and forcing a ton of turnovers and owning the defensive glass. We won the turnover battle, 16-12. If we win the turnover battle, we'll win the game. It's not more complicated than that
- Rough Pickett game but ultimately didn't matter. His biggest impact was driving on Garcia to draw his 3rd foul before half. Heads up play
- The play that I think is the Ewing offense run to perfection. Blair and Wahab ran pnr. Nothing there, Blair quickly moves it to Carey, who swings it to Bile in corner. Bile attacks the close-out and dumps it to Q for a wide open bunny. That's what can happen when you MOVE the ball
- Q finally getting to the line, it felt like a constant struggle all season for him to get calls. money performance from the stripe
- Tim was pretty effective in his limited minutes. He stayed home on defense, crashed the boards on offense, didn't try to do too much.
So you win by 19 and still had Bile, Pickett, Dante with plenty of room for improvement. Officially dangerous, time to take on the injured beast.
Great post. And agree - the Blair corner 3 probably biggest shot of the game to take it back up from 11 to 14.

I am Dante's biggest fan but not giving that up is inexcusable. My god.

Big East refs at it again. That guy was a foot inbounds when he caught it. Good for us! Please be sure to keep us posted on any calls that go our way today.

I dont know if this is a misprint, but my goodness some bookmakers are far more bullish on the Hoyas chances to make a run then I am. I hope they're right! It's just a misprint. Our actually odds from them according to the article are "Georgetown (+6000)" which is pretty good value if you think we can win this game. I have some money in at +15,000 (from pre-Covid break) and +10,000 from a few weeks ago. It has now dropped to +6500-6000 most places it seems.

So many tears. Lets not even start to go down the road of those times when I started to already think about the next 24 hours and it got cruelly snatched away. UConn with 4 minutes left in 96 Rutgers in 98 Halftime v Cuse in 06 So many others... Well at least you guys were there at the games. I've never been to a tournament game. But, but, but, I really enjoy watching the tournament games on TV. You see so much more of the action at home than you would at the game. Plus, you can yell at your tv and even throw stuff at it when your team is down or does something dumb to get you all riled up. Next year we are getting you to NYC!

Another favorite memory - Roy Hibbert's "I'm a monster game" against WVU in the BET semifinals in 2008. Sadly, lost to Pitt in the finals. That one is on my list as well. We looked so good in that game. I distinctly remember being on top of the world in the concourse (drinking a jumbo) after that game, waiting for the next game to start [we must have been the 7 pm game that night]. That is the best part abut the BET - if your team wins, in any round, you then have somewhere around 24 hours to just really enjoy friends, beer, other live games, March Madness going on generally, NY pizza, hot pretzels, beer... While the next night was painful, it was just a week later where I was as low as I have been as a Gtown fan. The Davidson loss mighty be #1 on my list in 33 years (again - keeping in mind that my clock starts in 88-89, so I dont have the emotional tie to losses in years prior to that). But that 08 BET WV game stands out for me as one of those games that were super fun to watch and left you thinking - damn this team is good. Some other examples (just off the top of my head without a lot of thought): - almost every game in the winter of 89 up until Princeton - several games early in the 96 season (eg, Temple) and the home Nova game late in 96 season - Duke and Ohio State in 2006 (the Ohio State game is the definition of 2 hours of fun / happiness for me) - At UConn in December Monroe's freshman year I know there are lots of others, but those jump out to me. And please no depressing comments on the fact that the last one was 10+ years ago!

A bit sad tonight. I know there are others with longer streaks, but tomorrow will be the first Georgetown game in the BET in 27 years where I wont be there in person in the Garden. And this will be only the 3rd tournament in 33 years I wont be there (since 1989, missing only 1993 and 1994). So many great memories and a whole lot of heartache and disappointment. Hard to believe we have only won it twice in all those years. Will be weird watching on TV tomorrow.

Right. So I'm just not getting the thought process that Harris needs to be a backup pg for us to be any good. He's a freshman. He cuts the TO rate, he hits threes at a decent clip, and he finishes better at the rim, and he's a plus PG. And I don't think that's crazy for next year. It's not guaranteed, but I'm not seeing anything that's broken there. He shoots almost 90% from the line -- that's both going to serve him when he gets fouled and it's a better predictor for 3PT% than his current 3PT%. There's so much focus on a freshman PG's current production, and I'm baffled as to why anyone is not excited by him. Because all you have to do is watch the actual games to see he is not as talented as most people he plays against. Look at all those things you want him to improve - that’s a pretty long list! And for his 90% free throw shooting, how many attempts are those on? Look, the Hoyas are a bad Big East basketball team this year. Ewing’s clearly a poor Big East basketball coach. Not sure either of those are particularly debatable statements. I get that we’re looking for silver linings, and Harris as an effort guy is an easy silver lining to root for, but he’s not a starting PG at this level. At least not for a good team. Wow - I have such a different view of this. Harris has made his share of freshman mistakes and of course has a lot to work on. But I am seeing the makings of a very solid 4 year Big East point guard and I couldn't be more excited about it. I suspect we will just agree to disagree on this and we will see how it plays out.

Guess you don't remember that Nova game from way back... I was at that game in Philly. IIRC, Harvey Thomas almost singlehandedly blew a 6-point lead in the last 10 seconds, before getting wrecked in OT. I am guessing that was '99? Or could have been '98 or '00

Is it possible that Big East teams are starting to dread playing the Hoyas?? Only if Georgetown plays all its games at home. Remember, three of the four de facto cancelled games were road games and GU is 1-5 on the road. As to the foul question--Georgetown won this game on the court but Seton Hall got no favors from the officials. Pirates called for as many fouls in the second half (13) as Georgetown got all game. I dont care about the # of fouls. Please list out the bad calls and I will go back and watch the tape. And please dont use Pete Gillen's reaction as your basis for determining what was a missed or bad call.

I’m ok with the missed out of bounds call because the guy who threw the pass took like 4 steps before he threw the ball. One question I had was can they review whether someone is out of bounds? They review who it was off, but can they review whether someone is out of bounds? Maybe they were just reviewing that to make sure Gtown didnt tip it across the court and they couldnt do anything about the fact he wasnt out of bounds? Dont know.

Th hate is real on this board. Hoyas win and folks talking about the r fs cheated...wow Agree with this 100%. I came here expected to find everyone over the top excited. But for the turnovers (many of which were horrible), we played a great game against a team that has really had our number for a number of years. Pickett was great. Harris was great. Carey was great. Solid contributions from Tim and Chudi. Great win and team really improving. We got a few calls, but nothing even close to justify hoyainla's weird reaction to this win. I guess he cant provide detailed analysis when we win.

Hope you bet the right way Didn't touch although the line was super fishy so I had a good feeling. I will be betting Seton Hall next game. After the league office watches that there is no way they don't get a good whistle next game. That was one of the most obvious screw jobs Ive ever seen. This is such a weird reaction when your team wins a game as a pretty big underdog. Please list out the bad calls.

Any goodwill and momentum the team built over the last 3 games is officially gone. What an abysmal performance against an opponent that literally did nothing else right but commit to defensive effort and being stronger to win a game going away against us. I don't subscribe to tired legs from Sunday being the culprit; we were just weak and lacked focus/concentration from the tip. I give a lot of credit to McDermott for making the necessary adjustments. They blitzed Blair mercilessly tonight and gave help against Q in the post, knowing that a kickout to find an open shooter wasn't likely to happen (it hasn't happened all season). Their rotations were crisper and the defensive effort was up several notches tonight. They were willing to give open perimeter looks to Dante and Bile, and the strategy worked. Blair compounded the problem by taking a couple super difficult off balance deep 3s, but he did hit a couple early when no one else was. That's two straight absolute duds in a row defensively for Q, who wasn't good on either end tonight. For a guy who overhelped without fail to try to get a block, jumped out at perimeter guys haphazardly to get a block, bit on a pump fakes in the post to get a block... to end with 0 blocks, a stupid goaltend, and serve as a turnstile all night... Q needs to be a whole lot smarter and disciplined but I'm sorry, as someone who is supposed to be a big man coach, this is on Ewing to fix and it shouldn't take half a season or even a week. Stop racing to the ball and overhelping, stay with your man, contest when appropriate, and focus on boxing the Edited out. Bile reverted back to the Bile we saw pre-COVID break; completely out of control, forcing when there was nothing there, not making the positive energy plays that made him so vital during the last 3 games. Why we continued to go to him on iso plays in the first half when it clearly wasn't working just wasn't very smart. Needs to stay within his role and understand that he can't try to do more than he's capable of and take on too much of the offensive burden when others aren't hitting their shots. 6 TOs in 24 min just cannot happen. Lappas continued to hammer us all game for taking too many 3s, but at some point guys just have to man up and hit open shots. We had plenty of open looks that just didn't drop. The blitzing of Blair and the doubling of Q in the post just gets worse if guys can't step up and stretch the floor. This is where not having a go-to guy to get to the rim really hurts us; Dante had shown some glimpses of it as of late but he still can't be counted on at this point in his career to consistently suck in a defense. 24 turnovers? Creighton played much harder defensively in Round 2 but I would still say at least half of those turnovers were careless and avoidable. We cannot go back to being a team that doesn't value the ball. Outside of the non-existent post defense, I thought we actually did a reasonable job running guys off the line and contesting 3s. Much like the first game, except for Ballock (4-9), everyone else (2-16) for Creighton couldn't buy a 3 all night. Our post players just continued to make too many mistakes overhelping in situations where they weren't helping at all. We should never even lose points in the paint like we did tonight to anyone. Two bright spots: I did think Pickett played a solid overall game and competed on both ends while staying disciplined. It's unfortunate he was really the only one. I also thought Wilson gave good minutes in limited action; he was the only big to stay grounded and avoid shot fakes to be in proper position to contest. Whether or not you think we need to play our upperclassmen to give ourselves the best chance to win games, having the majority of the starters continue to play well into garbage time tonight when the outcome had already been decided was a mistake. Even if you don't think the bench guys this year can help today or long term (and none of them fully acquitted themselves in that regard tonight), the goal is to have the freshest possible team for Saturday against Butler. Leaving Pickett, Blair, and Dante out there for 38/35/29 minutes to try to cut a 20 point deficit to 10 by the end of the night makes no sense to me. Butler picked up a tough win tonight at home against a surging St. John's team, so we better be prepared to show a lot more fight and physicality on Saturday than we did tonight, or we will get embarrassed again. Expecting that point to be hammered home this week. Great post.

For a long time fan such as yourself, this speaks volumes about how far the expectations of the men's basketball program have dropped. Where once there were people asking how a #4 seed like Georgetown can't seem to get out of the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament, a one point win at home over a Providence team hovering around .500 is now seen as a tremendous accomplishment. I have always been that way. Even in down years even one crappy conference win makes me very happy. Were you impressed that I remembered that we beat a ranked Seton Hall team twice in 2001 on that Hoop Club zoom? And to clear - I was not commenting on what kind of accomplishment beating Providence was - I was commenting on how it made me feel.
