Oof. Don’t like the matchup; would much rather play Butler. Oh well, need to gameplan and play full 40 minutes.

Maybe so, but of the other five teams playing in the opening round I think we drew the toughest opponent. Marquette has some good OOC wins (Wisconsin, just last week against UNC) and if the good version shows up then we’re in trouble.

I would have preferred Butler, but this is an interesting game. Marquette has closed the season strong — they’ve won four out of five (I think), including wins over UNC and Xavier. They also have a big loss to UCONN in that span. Excluding our game yesterday, we also have played well over the past month. We probably have the better win over that period with our victory over Creighton, but both teams have played relatively well.
The winner of this game is also about as well-positioned as one could hope to make a bit of a run. Villanova is struggling with injuries. They won’t be an easy opponent, but Creighton and UCONN wouldn’t be either. If we get past Villanova, SJU and Seton Hall are both beatable. It’s not easy, but no tournament is when you’re starting in the 8-9 game. I think that, of the teams playing on the first day, the winner of our game will be best positioned to make a run.

I like the optimism. It's about time our drought in the BET ends. GO Hoyas! Beat the Mouseketeers. I would have preferred Butler, but this is an interesting game. Think the team that wins the 3 point battle wins this one.

Marquette is a talented team for sure, but I think this offers a good test for us.
They defend inside well, but they don't just about everywhere else. They have a very good PG in Carton and Garcia is an excellent prospect at the four, but the rest of their guys aren't special. McEwen has been very inconsistent and Greg Elliot isn't much more than an alright spot-up shooter. I think our vets are going to have to play strong and crash the glass well. Harris and Blair showing up can really help us take this one. Our backcourt is the key to winning this one. We can score with them. Just have to hit shots.
And I think we can take them. They're very beatable.

When they beat us earlier in the year, Bile had 3 points and Pickett had 4. It was before either of them had really gotten going (and it still took 25 points from Jamal Cain to beat us)
Hopefully they come out and play well like they have the last month or so of the season. If they do that and we take care of the ball at a decent rate, I like our chances

If I had no scar tissue from the last several years, I would be optimistic that a Friday night appearance is a real possibility. But given our track record, it’s tough to not expect anything but a Wednesday exit at this point.

Zero chance we can beat Marquette. (Reverse jinx now implemented).

Some quick thoughts on Marquette:
- While their defense is ranked similar to ours, in Big East play, Marquette actually had the worst defense in the conference (only slightly worse than us, though).
- One of our defensive weaknesses is in defending threes. Marquette only shoots 32.8% from three, which is pretty bad. They do not defend the three well, either. So, this could bode well for us. That said, they do shoot twos well (at 52.1%, compared to our very poor 46.3%). Marquette doesn't shoot a ton of threes, which makes sense, since they are poor at shooting them.
According to Haslametrics, we are ranked 15th in the percentage of mid-range twos we take. That's too many.
- Looking at shot distribution is interesting. Marquette's: 28.5% threes, 50.8% twos, 20.7% free throws. In contrast, we are 35.7% threes, 46.5% twos, and 17.8% free throws. It is interesting that even though Marquette is a lot better at twos, we don't take that many fewer than they do. We really need to cut down the longer twos (and we take a lot) next year.
- Marquette does not force a lot of turnovers (ranked 326 of 357 on steals, really bad), and they cough it up a lot on offense (268 of 357). Of course, we are almost as bad. Our defense rarely causes turnovers (ranked 322) and on offense we turn it over a ton (315 of 357).

Please, please, please start Blair! We can not afford to get too far behind coach.

I hate to have to keep beating this drum but UCONN is far and away the best team in the conference and maybe one of the 10 best teams in the country right now. Not being in their bracket is a huge plus for us and at least offers a path to Saturday.

I beg of you coach to please please please start Blair! We got to get our offensive flow back! We can certainly win it if we get Blair going. So coach, please please please start Blair and get him going early. We can do with the mistakes he will make in the game. The tradeoff in his scoring is well worth it!!

The game was over against UConn by the time Ewing inserted Blair. It would be terribly disappointing if he sat him for the 4th straight game.

I actually feel better about our chances against Nova than Marquette. There is nothing special about any team in the BE this year. Hoyas have made some good teams look great. Again the key on offense is ball movement and hitting some 3s. First game had some of the worst 3 pt. shooting of the year with both teams in the 20+% range and Pickett taking very few shots. Pretty much given up hope that we can stop the TOs as they seem to be part of this team's DNA. Has any Hoya team ever had so much trouble finishing fast breaks or inbounding the ball against pressure?
