I go back to Derrick Jackson's jumpshot against WVU in Morgantown in'75 propelling Georgetown into the tournament for the first time in decades. I was there and remember the awe of just saying over and over "We're int he tournament".
We've been to the mountain-top and near the mountain-top a few times since then.

The '87 team is correctly described as a team of over-achievers. It is to me highly ironic that to to get to the Final Four they had to beat Providence, a team they had dismantled in the BET two weeks earlier.
To this day I can't look at Pitino or Billy Donovan without remembering that Regional Final.

I've always liked Vandy- a school that does things the right way in a conference full of sleaze. Stallings' comment on the supposed travel l (link to an explanation as to why it wasn't elsewhere on this board) only reinforces that.
I feel priveleged to watch Green and this team play. I felt that way in February when I saw Jeff hit the mid-range jumper that won the Nova game at the Wachovia Center. The three point play off the tip-in and the Step Through and Kiss are legendary.
I have my ticket for Sunday and I believe.

Great comedy. The article reads as if you gave the dork in your office who finished last in the NCAA pool the space to rationalize his discredited picks.
I too particularly enjoyed the reasoning that had UNC "easily" winning the national championship after winning the East final.
Two years at business school at Virginia turned me into an ACC critic. The arrogance at those schools, the sense of entitlement is stifling.

Anybody elso note the two dagger three's by Wallace? Pitt had just missed a three that would have cut it to ten. Maybe witht the d we played tonight it wouldn't have made a difference, but that run seemed to seal it.

that Lent thing has been bemusing.
I was listening to them the day after Ash Wednesday as Golic proclaimed that he abstained from sweets on Sundays despite the fact that (as Greenberg pointed out to him )Sundays aren't a part of Lent.
He then went on to describe his Ash Wednesday supper as including a chicken patty. I wondered if someone ever told him that Ash Wednesday is a day of abstinence from meat.

I logged on this morning and am proud to say I only clicked to this thread. I'm past last night.
We all should clear our heads and get ready for Saturday.
I wouldn't even call last night a bump in the road. Losing in the BET semi-final last year was that. I think all would agree we finished last season in strong fashion.
Last home, game, a week's rest, an inexperienced foe I like how it sets up.

Did you see those yahoos rush the court tonight? That's what happens when an inferior team beats an elite team.
Syracuse is a basketball irrelevancy this year. Just as they were last year. If they make the tournament so what? They're going nowhere. Even though I hate that team I'm happier with wins over Marquette, Villanova and Pitt, good teams that might do some damage in March.
The win streak is over, the pressure is off. I'm happy to be playing a very ordinary Connecticut team in our last home game with four days' rest. I like our chances. As has been mentioned elsewhere there's some work to be done- fewer turnovers, better rebounding and better use Roy on the offensive end.
Thanks Hoyas for a thrilling 1.5 months. I'm excited about what's left.

Boston guy- seems to like BC a lot.
L'ville is playing better but I'd like to revisist him March 19 when we see who's still alive.

Thanks for the post Buckeye 70 and best wishes to you.
I hope five years from now when we're watching Jeff play somehwere else we'll remember this day when he willed his team to the win.
I don't get to see the Hoyas play live much anymore, but today in front of a semi-hostile (excellent Hoya representation above the 100 level) crowd Jeff put on a good show. Sapp and Summers -nice games too.

Back from the game. The post-game lines at Pat's/Geno's were absurd. Someone should tell Nova Nation that you don't get an after-game cheesesteak unless your team wins. To the victors belong the whiz with.
Took my own advice from Nova Roll Call and went to Tony Luke's. A roast pork with sharp provolone and hot peppers was the perfect victory repast. At Tony Lukes you order your sandwiches and they call your name out when they're made. One of my sons suggested we give our name as "Roy Hibbert". I went instead with Mr Eight Blocks and last four points of the game. More than a few heads in the post game crowd snapped up when "Jeff Green" stepped forward to claim his three sandwiches. My sons couldn't hold their giggles in.
A few observations: The crowd: Strong Hoya presence. Club box 15 where I sat was split 50/50 among partisans. The back four rows were so Hoya- soaked that four Nova fans seated to my left left for other parts.
Strong closeput of both halves: As has been noted we were trailing in the first half 29-18. We might have ended the half doubled up and in just too deep a hole. We fought back nicely. Even without Sapp's heave, we end up down only five and with nice momentum. The last five minutes of the game we played lock-down D on them.
Reynolds equals James: Lot of love for Reynolds here today but I thought after some nice three's early he was over-aggressive the rest of the game.
Hibbert foul trouble: I thought Foul 3 was a block and incidental contact at best. Foul 4 was a nickel-dimer.
Villanova came out fired up. They played with energy and confidence. A win here is probably more vital to them than to us. We did what good teams do: absorbed their shots in both halves and ground out the win. A victory like this will hopefully pay dividends in Mid-March.

I dunno, texanmark I watched the CT-Syracuse game Saturday and it seemed to lack the spark of a Georgetown-Syracuse tiff. Perhaps it's the relative mediocrity of both teams this year.
I would suggest Georgetown's improvement may rekindle things for you.

When I moved to Philadelphia in the early 80's I drove Nova fans CRAZY when I said Georgetown's rivals in the Big East were St John's and Syracuse. Nova desperately wanted to think of themselves as competitive with us. Generally in the period 80 to 84 we beat them like a drum. I told them there's a Big Three in the Big East and you ain't in it. 85 changed all that.
I would put Nova behind Syracuse. I'd like to hope St John's would be back someday.
In 2003 I was down at the Practice Rounds of the Masters when the Championship game aired. I was the guest of some guys from upstate New York who while they weren't alumni, were on the Orange bandwagon because what the hell else do you do in Buffalo besides the Sabres. As the game was ending in a Syracuse triumph I excused myself. Even though I was there as their guest drinking their vodka and eating their steak I couldn't even pretend to share their joy. I guess my point is Syracuse for me is in a class by itself. I never wish them well. I believe somebody on this Board noted the Boehiem Exception. It's real for me.

Try Tony Luke's on Oregon Avenue-good cheesesteaks, better roast pork.
I'll be there if my stubhub tickets ever come thru. After getting pimped out of my Pavillion tickets last year, I'm despairing of seeing what seems to be a special team in person soon.

A common denominator to many rivalries is geographic proximity although there are execptions (ND-USC that's just football).
I'm not from the Midwest so I would ask how much overlap is there between the student bodies and alumni of the two schools?
these days I have to try hard to get past Crean's histrionics. That said, I always have a soft spot for Marquette going back to the late sixties (Anybody remember Dean Meminger?) and early seventies. pre big East. when Marquette was consistently the only successful Catholic school on the big-time basketball scene.
The '77 title game where the Warriors (as they were known then) defeated North Carolina still sticks in my memory. Dean Smith turns Phil Ford and his vaunted Four Corners loose killing his team's momentum and letting Marquette back in the game. One of the great over-coaching foibles around.

Syracuse L'ville- congratulations to the Arch- Whiner for coaching his 1,000 Division I b-ball game. As I watched you snarl and sulk on the sidelines and post-game in the early eighties, I never thought you'd outlast Looie, rollie and John. Only one problem- you lost. Come to think it, you really don't do too well in these milestone games. Georgetown has helped you there on two occasions.
!980- ranked #2 you lose the final game at Manley Field House. Coach Thompson's ringing "Manley is officially closed " declaration helps a budding rivalry along.
2002- The dedication of the Jim Boeheim Court at the Carrier Dome is spoiled by a Georgetown (you think they might picked another foe) victory.

only saw the second half and I agree with the comments about good perimeter D.
I also thought the poise on offense was notable. I don't recall a possession where we futilely passed around the perimeter until the shot clock nearly expired and then threw up something desperate. I noted Green's aggressive moves to the hoop and increased efforts to involve Hibbert.
A solid win. I think DePaul's performance in their next five games will tell what kind of team they might be.
