Where did you hear rumors of New Mexico St.? Although, I think you may just be pulling our chains due to NMS less than stellar record...I've added them to the OOC table just in case...but that's the first I've heard. It is actually NM not state, UCLA plays NMS in the NIT and with my half asleep typing this morning I confused the two, sorry. unfortunately, i just found that the wooden site has been updated and we are not included www.woodenclassic.com/index.htmlNM vs UW and UCLA vs Nevada is the slate. argggggh. now back to hoping for a match up with LMU!

So do we have to wait for the GU schedule to be announced to get confirmation that we are playing NM State? Does anyone have any better info on this?
Also, looking at their schedule I find it interesting that UCLA is playing a game (if you can call delaware state a game) in between the 2nd rnd of the NIT & the semi's in nyc.

It could definatly be worse, back home we have the Long Beach Artists and the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. California striking fear in opposing schools one politicaly correct mascot at a time. Clarification: CSU Long Beach are the 49ers, their top 10 baseball team goes by Dirtbags. Laguna Beach High School was "The Artists" for years and changed it 2-3 years ago to "The Breakers" My high school was very intimidating in its own right "The Steamers" after the Stanley Steamer which a vacuum cleaner or something.

i have not been to yates in almost a decade (wow am I old) so i dont know what condition it is in. If it isnt falling apart then I agree that the arena should come first, my point is that in the grand scheme of things yates is more important to GU and its students than an arena because it is an important part of the day to day or at least week to week life of the majority of students while an arena would not be, there is no comparison. If yates is in the same shape it was when I was there, usable but not beautiful, no reason it needs to jump in front of the arena.

my estimates of yates usuage are unscientific but i also worked at yates and would conservatively estimate that at least 8 out 10 hoya students went to yates at least once in a year and at least 3 out of 10 went daily. I would have to think long and hard to think of any one I knew who did not visit yates. Even if all they did was go for two days after new years and then dropped their resolution to get in shape they received more benefits from yates than the majority of students will ever get from the hoops team.

Nice student gyms are a plus for students/prospective students, but a crazy on campus arena is a bigger one.htm not true at all, i am the biggest supporter of an on campus arena but if yates needs to be remodled it is a far bigger priority for the university. An arena supports activities that fewer than 300 students activly participate in and fewer than 2000 students (usually far far fewer) passively participate in during a school year. I would assume that easily more than 5000 students use yates in a year. there is no contest there.

Whatever you do, bring back the pots-pans-spoons (damnit... I can't remember the name... "Pots & Spoons"?) at the soccer games. That was a riot when I was there. I believe it was "Pots & Spoons" started in 94 by a friend who was in the class of 94 or 95 who went nuts at soccer games, i think that was also the year we made the NCAA tournament in mens soccer.

to clarify something posted earlier in this thread, and i am surprised Nevada hasnt chimed in to do this himself, but the track program is still getting the shaft, GU is working on a track that will not be a real track and will not be able to hold meets. a disgrace for what has been consistently the most successful sports program at GU for decades.

similar as above, since i was a senior at the game in 96 that was devastating, of course since UMASS didnt win that game then we couldnt have lost right?
We got killed in that game so it deadened the blow a little, after the game started we were never thinking about a trip to the meadowlands, long drive home from hot-lanta after that game, then working at yates that morning, brutal.
We were the 2 seed playing the 1 seed in that game, everyone thought we would lose to Hamm & Texas Tech on thursday so i hadnt had much time to build up the final four expectation yet.
Far more devastating to me was the USUCK loss in the BET that year since we had that game in hand. That still haunts me and will at least until we win one. a poll on worst BET finals loss or BET loss in general would be interesting too.

from what I have heard from people who saw it on TV, the announcers looked at the replay and determined that the foul was the right call. Maybe someone else on this board saw it on the tube and heard/saw something different The announcers thought the play was clean (anyone who says it wasnt is on crack) but thought Green had gotten away with a no call earlier in the game so they felt it was justified which is crap. A no call on the previous play and maybe you make something up but not something a while back in the game.

I taped the game, it sounded great, possibly the best moment was the FT mentioned earlier in this thread. Jarvis was talking and it was so quiet he trailed off and commented that he felt wierd talking cause the place was so quiet, i think bowman was at the line. some great dunks by bowman and the last green foul was not even close to a foul. several comments about how loud it was by the announcers. now i know what it must be like to be a duke alum for one of their games because the entire broadcast was one big love fest of the hoyas. they also mentioned that Freddy Brown was in the audience.

When it became clear that it was basically unfair to expect them to play in front of our crowd with about 3 minutes left in the half the crowd stopped toying with Opie for a while and cheered "Lets Go UTEP" until UTEP finally broke into double digits shortly before halftime.
I posted in another thread but go no answer to this, does anyone know how many students attended that game? To me it seemed to be 75% students or more but that is just the recollection of an old man of a drunken evening.

very sad that students arent excited about the game.
anybody know what the stats were for the NIT game vs UTEP in 93, how many student tix were sold for that because it seemed like the whole place was students at the time.

No way the NIT allows us to host a game at McD the 93 game was one of my greatest hoya hoops experiences but 2500 tickets to be sold doesnt do much for the NIT's bottom line. The only plus for the NIT is that it would ensure that the Hoyas move on to the next round because there is no way anyone is coming in to McD and winning.
if the hoyas some how get to play CSFullerton and have to travel I would be beyond ecstatic but I cant really imagine that happening, but i can dream. Any hoya who wants to travel for that game can sleep in my garage.

NCAA's without a question, yes it would be great to get the extra experience of more games in the NIT but it is against lesser comp and the program would still be an NIT program. Not to mention we could easily go down just as early in the NIT against a hot team with a chip on their shoulder on their home floor.
While fewer games there is a lot to be said for the experience of going to the big dance, especially if we expect to go deep next year. The NIT is a much different experience, without the national hype of march madness and also it is almost always at campus arenas until MSG. It is a different feeling playing in front of a mostly neutral crowd - (of course our guys have more experience than most for that playing at the phone booth.)
It has been a long time since we were in the dance, we need to be back there for recruiting, for exposure, for alumni and for player experience. Puts us more on the map for pre-season rankings next year too.
everyone here seems to think it impossible for us to make the cut on sunday but if MD, and Va tech have a chance with their resume then we are looking good even if we dont get brownie points for being on the court at the same time as the great reddick. actually just playing against duke should count as 5 RPI points since you must learn so much just by being near those great players. Coach K probably does some charity coaching to the other team also because he is such a humanitarian.
