Overall a pretty decent effort by the men in grey. Some positives (much improved 3 point shooting) and some negatives (poor free throw shooting... not to mention Macklin's airballed attempt) but, in a welcome departure from some earlier games, the game never felt like it was slipping away nor even that the outcome was in jeopardy.
Also, with regard to the above...
Roy had a big time exam hangover. When he gets mad though.... it's like a different person out there. If there was some way to bet on specific plays, true Hoya fans could make a killing. After one of his blocks, he got the fire in his eyes. I absolutely knew he would get the ball and put the ball in the basket. There was no doubt. And what happened? Our guards got him the ball (!) and he did just that even with several defenders in his face. We need to make him mad more often.
PEjr's steal-dunk was more than "nothing special." He made a good defensive play and made a good offensive move to the basket, taking it strong to the rim when it looked like there was nothing there. A play or two like this from him every game is what I thought he'd be providing.
Turnovers. Tiny improvement tonight. Still too many. Need to decrease.

This Gary Neal character sounds pretty good--26.1 ppg last year, leading returning scorer in the country.
[Insert boilerplate discussion about guard play here]

On the plus side though, Vernon does possess great "length." This seems to be the most important basketball skill - at least according to the commentators on espn and cbs.
He is capable of flashes of greatness and I fully expect him to be a very, very good player... in a year or maybe two. He still is hesitant to make 'basketball moves' with the ball and usually ends up handing it off to a guard on the perimeter.

to clarify... 70.6% from the FREE THROW line 58.3% FG To re-clarify: 2 pt FGs: 23-32 (72%) 3-pt FGs: 5-16 (31%) Total FGs: 28-48 (58%) I LOVE that Roy shot 10/12 tonight. It seemed that with the exception of the opening minutes of the first half, Roy was playing with a chip on his shoulder. He was fired up, yelling and screaming, and actually fighting for post position. When he stopped doing this, basically stood straight up, and looked to hand the ball off to people cutting past him, he struggled. When he regained his agressiveness, we looked like a different (waaaaaay better) team.

Teams have a tendency to look bad when every time they go down the court the refs call them for an "offensive foul" The refs MUST have had money on this game. No way can an impartial observer make so many bad calls in a single game of basketball. I knew things were bad when even stoic-faced Jon Wallace lost his cool. Luckily, mean Jeff Green was there to quiet him down and prevent the technical.

Some very positive items to note:
1. Jeff and Roy showed up and dominated for stretches. I wouldn't say this was necessarily the best overall front court game we've played this year. But Jeff and Roy played with a fire (most of the time) that was lacking in some previous games.
2. Our second-half slump didn't last for the entire second half. It was probably a good thing we were up by 20 at the half because we came out flat to start the second half. Unlike in past games, however, the leaders on the team (see point #1) would not let them back into the game.
Both of these points are things I was really hoping to see before conference play. A great game from my perspective.

Austin Freeman and Chris Wright can't land us a spot in the top 60?
And ESPN makes you PAY for insightful, in-depth analysis like this?

This just in from the not-so-shocking news department: Drinx (6th & F St) has closed. In what had to have been one of the lamer spots near Verizon, one could grab a drink (or maybe even a couple of drinkxxx). I was never really impressed by the place so it's not that terrible to see it go.
California tortilla, on the other hand, sells Miller lite for $2.75 or something like that and played host to a few Hoya faithful before the JMU contest.

I liked the ramped up responsibility in terms of "partner stunting." Good to see the male cheerleader stepping up and holding that girl all by himself.
Also, nice work with the flag.

Well, no matter what happens, we are 100% guaranteed to beat Winston-Salem State. It is statistically impossible for us to lose that game.

sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=rivals-76192&prov=rivals&type=story_recruitingHere is the link that marketingphenom is referencing i believe. It is an early look at the Big East recruiting scene for 2007...while info is short on CWright, Austin gets serious props in areas that we need desperately right now (among others Most Clutch, Impact Player, Best Shooter) I hope Chris has an amazing year and climbs up the rankings even more - everyone knows if he stays healthy he has that kind of potential. Also, Jersey or someone else, are you guys doing the high school updates as the games start up for these two and Wattad? I always enjoyed those updates last year...just wondering. Looks like Yahoo has already started their Austin Freeman slurp-fest. Glad we got him signed... any news on Chris Wright's LOI?

While I confess I was part of the large %age of the fans boo-ing, I also confess that even if that foul does get called, we still lose (not even the 7'2" ravenous beast can convert a seven point play....yet).
The refs definitely did not cost us this game.

Agreed.
Though, it's still hard to fall from #8 to 3-2 (with two bad losses at home) in less than three weeks.

Overall, there seems to be a decline in movement this year (based on observations at the three Verizon center games). We used to crush man D because of the defense's inability to stay with their man while he makes multiple cuts on each posession.
When the guys aren't cutting as much, it doesn't matter whether the D is man, zone, or maybe even something really cool that I don't know about.
It was so sweet watching us backdoor the Dookies last year, I hope III has us watching film of that before saturday because I would love to see a repeat performance of that this year.

Also a problem in section 120 (among others), the non-Hoya fans. I would rather have the lower bowl full of Hoyas sitting on their hands than have to listen to visiting fans chant "Overrated" right into my ears.

Radiant energy.
Also, I shiver at the meer mention of our players being paid in any way shape or form. It simply kills a program. Compared to that, our two losses don't seem like that big of a deal.
