III is well received by recruits and reason there is always interest. What's hurt him and will continue to is the lack of help he's getting from the guys who have to do the work to set it up for him to close. This is coming from someone who speaks frequently with 5 kids this program actively recruited or is recruiting. Their opinion of their contact coach (assistants) isn't nearly as high as it is for other programs involved and same goes for what their parents/coaches think as well. You can't expect your HC to do the work of the assistants and his job as well. He should be able to close the deal--Porter for instance--Kirby set foundation, and III closed it up. That's how the program should be set up.

Wright is the reason Nova has tailed off--he ignored some excellent advice from excellent basketball people and ever since that moment (reached out to NBA people via Ed Pinckney) that program has gone to crap. He has no concept of how to utilize or develop talented bigs (Yarou/Ochefu) and prefers guys like the dirty Mo Sutton and his best "strategic move" is to foul so much he extends games into the 2 hour, 30 min range.
If he ever got caught messing with coeds--would it stun anyone?

true. I guess I was just trying to be positive. Johnson would be a huge get for the hoys, but I just can't see them beating out UK Georgetown is in this recruitment--no need to try and be positive. they have a shot--and if you really want to see their cause helped--hope for a Wiggins/Gordon duo to UK (that is more then possible too) with Randle to UF (although he's in play for UK and Texas too) and Dakari to Gtown is far more likely.

because he reclassified to 14. I mean I'm just speculating, but Dakari might not be a one and done player. So with this committ, he knows he might be second fiddle in year two. I'm just speculating though. If we want any chance at dakari we have to hope cauley-stein comes back Dakari Johnson/Julius Randle are the 2 to watch more--even Aaron Gordon. What happens behind Johnson in terms of classification doesn't matter--especially with Dakari being a true Center and Towns playing more like Dirk Nowitski.

Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Domingo playing more then Smith Rivera by Big East season. I see more talent/upside and I'm still trying to see what Smith Rivera can bring to this team that helps? He's proven to be a good shooter but the problem he's had/will have--can he get his shot off against high major athletes? I doubted it watching him in HS and don't see anything that has me changing my opinion. Domingo has the height and ability to get shots off--just needs confidence. DSR--you run him off the 3 and don't see anything he'll do successfully and more importantly-if he's not hitting his shot, he's proven to be a complete liability on the court.

He needs to quit with the more serious empty calories--alcohol--and the recreational activity that leads to the "munchies". That is a start. He needs to treat people with respect and quit being a big fat (literally) baby. His behavior with training staff at UCLA was deplorable and wouldn't have been tolerated by most programs when it happened--since Howland has no idea how to communicate/relate/motivate young people, he just let Smith treat the staff like crap. When an assistant finally told him to get his act together-he quit.
sound like a guy who has figured out that he's got one last shot? Weight issues are about being self motivated and disciplined. When a kid blames others, is defiant, quits on his teammates when getting told that he's not playing because he's out of shape, what speaks to the fact he's a good addition? Smith's "potential" is the allure--the reality is he's a whiny, lazy, unaccountable person who needs to grow up and quit blaming everyone for his issues and lack of effort.
As for scholarship issues--again Tyler Adams being unable to play due to medical reason means he can keep his scholarship and NOT COUNT towards the full allotment. So Georgetown has a scholarship to utilize. There are also roster possibilities that can/will happen with the program--as is case with all programs.

I recall the close game Hoyas vs Texas Tech during the '84 Final Four year..... SMU-not Texas Tech.

I know he didn't have anything to show for it--but I like Domingo's activity/energy he brings. He just needs a game where he hits some shots--and get confidence up. I expect him to play a larger role then Smith Rivera by end of season and if Hoyas are to peak in March.

I don't understand why Hopkins can't jump. He's not carrying any extra weight. I'd love to know his vertical jump. It's got to be stunningly poor. Hop can probably jump and reach higher than anyone else on our team (who has seen the floor).... I'll take Bowen as a leaper--I think Hopkins is athletic--but he's just not strong in lower legs (to his defense--this program fails it's players in that area and has for some time) so when in traffic he struggles to explode and finish strong above the rim. He played hard and while it's not fun to say--I'll take his effort-he competed and battled all night. (meaning you'd like to celebrate results and great performance, not effort) Actually saw DSR attempt to play some defense for a few possessions--so that was improvement and then of course he had multiple busts--but at least he understood what he was doing will not cut it. He is what he is-a slow/unathletic player, so he's going to get blown by on defense--but at least he got in a stance, sprinted back on defense and tried. Someone has to win a game like this--and we won't remember this game as anything other then a win by season's end. Only thing that was frustrating--Hoyas had a nice spurt going when they got out in transition to start 2nd Half and then they decided to slow it down/grind it out? This is what is just so frustrating to watch about this team at times and if you want to commit to improving that area, it has to be consistent throughout a season.

I agree with what you are saying about this year's UK team. Disagree with saying this year will be the "proof" that what he's doing doesn't work. He's been there 4 years-and their results are: Elite 8, Final 4, National Champions. So out of a 4 year window to judge his preferred way of running his program, we're going to judge the 1 year they appear shaky as the norm? I'd say it's more a reflection of just how limited the '12 class was overall. Not a very deep group of instant impact players and really they are 1 player short--if they had Bennett or Muhammed, they'd be a top 5 team with this group. Next year--he's going to have a loaded team again--and elite guard play--which is what this team is lacking. Calipari is going to be fine in the future--because '13-15 classes are loaded with elite talent--deeper pool and strong PG play. He took Harrow because he didn't like the PG's in 12 and Harrow has proven to be similar--but he doesn't have to be great--just has to be good because CBB is the same this year. I mean the same group we're all having a "meh" attitude towards lost to Duke by 5 on a neutral court and was down 14 in 2nd Half and got game down to 2 pts--and it was their 2nd college game against a veteran Duke team. ND is experienced and tough in South Bend. I think Hoyas would lose to them in South Bend right now too--by time they play--think Hoyas can beat them but right now-i'd take ND over GU in South Bend due to how sloppy they've been with the ball. Clark/Sims were outstanding against ND last year and aren't on this team, so we can't talk of what UK loses and ignore what Hoyas lost too. It's why we all love CBB--a loss in Nov/Dec doesn't hurt if you play good competition. I thought Hoyas best game of year was a loss. They were better against Indiana then UCLA and lost. If they play like they did against IU, they'll win a lot of games. All good points. I just think that if they have Noel, WCS, Goodwin, Poythress and company gone again next year it will be tough without guys like Doron Lamb and Darius Miller to hold it all together . That's just my opinion though. It just goes to show you that they might not be dominant every year if the roster turnover keeps making the team younger and younger. We will see though. Interesting though, I thought we played more poorly against IU. Either way they showed out in Brooklyn You're making strong points about Miller/Lamb/Jones being the key to what allowed the FR to be "stars". Don't disagree at all--but he'll still have Wiltjer and likely Cauley-Stein--who will benefit from the guards/increased athleticism/quickness and if they get who they are rumored to be getting-Wiggins and 1 of the other 3 guys (Randle,Gordon, Dakari) it's a loaded group. I think Harrow will leave even if he's seen as a backup guard--he should stay but think he'd leave, and we'll see what happens. Poythress is best bet out of that trio to stay-Noel and Goodwin are gone for certain and I expect Poythress to go as well but out of that group--he's one I see most likely to stay another year--good student, has twin sister on campus with him, some say he likes being "one of the guys" and not "the guy". I think Indiana is better then UCLA and fact Hoyas hung in a game they didn't play that crisp told me about their toughness. That's why I think they played better and if they play that way--they'll win a lot of games and be team many think. What makes me nervous--we've seen them play down to level of some opponents and that is type of performance where we've seen them lose to a Rutgers/USF when you least expect it and push them towards 10-8 in conference instead of upper tier of the league. That has to change-hold themselves to a higher standard and bring effort/fight to each game. Won't win them all but playing hard/focused shouldn't be an issue. Which is why so many of us have ? marks about this year's UK team--that was worst effort/lack of toughness we've all seen from a Calipari team in quite some time. Like him/hate him--his teams play hard and last night they quit during possessions/stretches of game and didn't show any mental/physical toughness.

Its not about casting stones. Its about the reality of their team at this moment. There are a good 15 teams clearly more dominant then them right now. Its hard to win with a team full of freshman. They didnt only have good freshman last year, they also happened to be great players. How often does a team lose the #1 and #2 draft pick in the same season? I think last year's season will be the exception going forward if Cal doen't bring back a solid core of vets every year. Losing and replacing a starting 5 with freshman will not work in the college landscape if there is no experience around them. Anthony Davis and MKG aren't going to be coming out of hs every year. They couldn't lock up a top PG and had to bring in Harrow? He's not that good. Its the reality of the situation. They're going to get better as the season goes on, but at this point not many college teams are actually scared of playing them. I'm not trying to run down UK, its more like they've been put on a pedestal and everyone is afraid to question them. Cal is a great recruiter and solid coach, but this recipe is going to under perform more often than not without veteran leadership. If we played the same ND team yesterday I wouldve expected a win and a loss probably would have been fairly surprising. Sure we lost a lot, but this ND was not very impressive when they came to Verizon for senior night. I agree with what you are saying about this year's UK team. Disagree with saying this year will be the "proof" that what he's doing doesn't work. He's been there 4 years-and their results are: Elite 8, Final 4, National Champions. Agreed. By most accounts, Brey wanted even more of the football players to be there, and that's a smart move. III would clearly do the same. It wasn't so much the ingame interview that bothered me. It was the fact they were split screening it during game play. I really don't need to see Digger Phelps or Te'o while the game is going on ^ This

Yeah! They haven't won a championship in MONTHSI'd be embarrassed if I was that program. So you're saying that losing in that fashion wouldn't be embarrassing? We may not be in the national championship hunt every year but we also don't get beaten badly often either. Remember this is the same ND team that we blew out last year. At least were not where UK is at this point in the season. Perception is they're more loaded than us, but in reality they're not. At least not in this part of the season. For UK, yes this is a pretty decent blemish...when's the last time they lost in that fashion? Under Calipari that was only the 2nd time they have lost by double digits--other was against UConn in Maui the year they won the National Title, so I'm sure their fans aren't too happy and are surprised. Hoyas who haven't won in South Bend since '06 season get their chance this year. So we'll see how they fare this year with their opportunity to change that.

So after the first night, things are 2-2. Who else was embarrassed watching ND students storm the court after beating the overrated #8 team in a game they probably should have been favored in? Act like you've been there ND. ND was favored in that game--1-2 pt favorite depending on when you looked at the line. I was embarrassed for ESPN--the need to show Digger Phelps talking during the game? Manti Teo "cam" where we got to see him after every play. ESPN might not believe this but there are some fans who just like to tune in and watch basketball being played and not some sideshow. That telecast was a circus and the fact ND fans rushed the court was a fitting end to the night.

You've mentioned how great Kirby was and how great Broadus is now as a recruiter. To the extent you think we're falling short because of some of our assistants, do you have suggestions as to other potential assistant hires that could put us over the top on some of these big time recruits? Can't talk about this on board--it's against rules. I do have some opinions on this--but can't say it here.

RDF perhaps you can sort of address some of those offensive myths - objectively, of course. Unless you feel the same about the offense. We are running more this year and (last); players have been allowed to make plays without much of an objection from JTIII. Not my job to interfere or tell players about Georgetown program--I talk with them because I know their families, know their coaches, have been around some of them since they started playing or met them/parents at events and keep in contact. I listen and ask questions--don't tell them anything other then good luck. As I said--they all like III and parents grew up with Georgetown program too--but as one parent said "Georgetown's cool--but more of a big man program". Dakari's mom loves III/Georgetown and knows the history-but she also mentioned UK's entire staff by name--Payne, Antigua, specifically got mentioned and this was back in April when Dakari was just playing in a big event after sitting out--and hadn't reclassified. She's running the show-and Dakari is a great kid--as was Nerlens--people have this idea that Noel is some bad guy based on crap that nobody who decided was spewing on social media. Noel was not coming to Georgetown-and if things in his recruitment were handled differently--he might have been committed to Hoyas way before it came down to the "announcement". It wasn't. III has an uphill battle--and he's doing a fine job. My only issue is that he's facing a tough fight with the level of recruits that would make his job a lot easier. To get those guys and being at a disadvantage in several areas (facilities, academics--being strong and enforcing it--) you have to be exceptional in other areas-for instance--the recruiting duo of Kirby/Broadus would've been best in the history of Georgetown. You throw III in as the closer and it's best trio you could put out there. Well Kirby splits--and you're at same position--one proven commodity with player who makes an impact, and III to do work of HC and Assistant. That's gotta change.

You never quit recruiting someone--but you also have to give yourself the best opportunity to sell your program and Hoyas are really struggling in that area. Talking with players/parents and listening to what they say (can tell you I communicate with 5 kids who are/were considering Georgetown) about the program, III is received in glowing terms--they don't really care for the style of play, but they like him. Kirby was loved by parents/recruits/coaches. Broadus carries weight with same group. After that--what was said was far less flattering. Again-you can draw your own conclusions but to me it's simple--you can have a great product, great "owner/leader" of that product, but if his salesmen can't sell it, then you better find some who can. Everyone can talk of "UK......cheat..." but the kids know their assistants, have relationships with them and that goes for most programs who they are considering. You get to Gtown and it's "III's cool....like him a lot, " and I ask "who is your contact coach" and it's easy to know who Hunter/Brennan are on because the kids/parents say "some assistant". When it's Kirby/Broadus--they state them by name. I've been at events where kids/parents ask me (knowing I'm a Hoya fan) why Georgetown isn't there to watch them--and I point out that Hunter or Brennan are there. To me, that's a major problem, but again--I'm only speaking to what is being told to me. And out of the kids I'm talking about--4 will be McDonald's All Americans and others could be. I'm also giving you a filtered version of what is actually said--which isn't flattering and in one case was an embarrassment to the program. Whether III knows this is happening or not-it's effecting his program and ability to sell it to elite/talented players.

I still say we go balls to the wall on him. Even if we end up second to UK for a top 10 kid there is no shame. But we need to start finding ways to land these kids. You don't go into a gun fight with a butter knife and a spork, and that's what Georgetown attempts to do when they are on the trail.

Yeah and the discussion was whether we wanted Porter or Whit (when we had 1 scholarship left). I chose the local product, but it is really hard to go wrong with either. Luckily for us another spot opened up and we got both. They will both be first round draft picks. First two wings for GU go to the league (knock on wood). Jaren Jackson might disagree with that last comment Reggie Williams too.
