The NFL Network and the MLB Network both had huge fights to get on to basic digital tiers of cable providers, as opposed to the sports tiers where those networks only get a cut of the cable bills of those who pay extra for them. So even if the Big Ten gets Rutgers, they'll still have a long fight to get clearance on any basic tier. But that is absolutely where the most money is.
Why are a bunch of colleges and universities turning into cable moguls in the first place? (Yeah, I know. Money.) But a serious question: does the Big Ten Network have to pay the same taxes as the NFL or MLB Networks? Or do they get some kind of tax breaks because they are non-profits? I guess we can't stop the greed, but it would be an outrage if they got tax dodges on top of it.

Uh-oh. From Garry Parrish:
"The size of the field is "totally at the NCAA's discretion." In other words, it's 68 for now. Could be more later. "
Knew this was too good to be true.

Hopefully we'll find out soon how long until they can opt out and try for 96. My hope is that the deal specifies that it can't be for a few years. At the very least this keeps ESPN's self-promoting hands off of the tournament. My understanding is that ESPN was making the biggest push for 96. Hopefully CBS and Turner aren't. And since the NCAA just got its money, maybe the push for 96 goes away for a while. But since I don't trust the greedy creeps who run college sports for a second, I want to see it in writing. Now let's see if we can save the Big East. Just another day in the billion dollar world of "amateur" athletics.

Are we certain that 96 teams is off the table? And if so, for how long? Looks like we might finally have some good news for college sports. (Knock on wood.)

I knew that as soon as I stopped checking, he'd declare. Selfishly disappointed, but he made the right choice for he and his family. Good luck, and I'll root for whatever team he's on. (Unless he's playing Jeff. Like Patrick Ewing 20 years ago, Jeff Green is the first among equals for JT III's guys for me.)
It's silly to try to spin this into a good thing. But college basketball has been a guard's game for a long time now, and you never know when a team is going to put it all together. Play defense and rebound, and we'll have a chance.

Am I being way too optimistic to think that Greg already announced? He was very definitive at the post-game press conference after Ohio, and it was reported widely that he's coming back (albeit with the caveat that he could change his mind). At this point, the only news is if he decides to go pro - so people shouldn't be rooting for an announcement. We should be rooting for silence. I still think he's going to go to the NBA, but isn't that what happened last year? He just said he was coming back at the end of the year, and that was it. If there was a press release that said he really, really was staying, I don't remember it. I keep checking this board every day for news, but I think I should just be happy that there hasn't been any.

I missed it, but here's the transcript: transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1004/04/sotu.01.htmlDoesn't sound like they got very deep into the issue of graduation rates, etc. (Sounds like a number of variations of "it depends on the circumstances".) But hopefully III came off well.

Nobody ever believes a retirement angle for good reason, but it sure looked like Michaels believes he is retired now. Check back in a year of course. Really good last hour saved an otherwise mediocre show. I was still probably ripped off for buying it, but it could have been worse.

Amen, Tas. I saw a bunch of intensity in the huddle during time outs, etc. But there are a ton of coaches who like to highlight how much they are "coaching" by ranting and raving on the sidelines. A whole bunch of that is a show for the cameras, fans, boosters, owners, etc. III doesn't do that, and he tries to never humiliate a player publicly. Good for him. That is not the reason we're all disapointed this weekend.

You can rank the college coaches any way you like, but we've got a terrific one here. The disappointment of this week will pass. But we've got someone in charge here who can entertain us and make us proud for decades. I hope like hell that happens.

I'm mostly kidding, but can we bring in the women's coach as a "defensive consultant"? This team is tough! And they're hitting a whole bunch of threes too...

By the way, did Kevin Harlan go to Kansas? He's covering this like a funeral. Gus Johnson would have had a heart attack long ago.

Nothing will make me feel good about this week, but now I am just conflicted. Having the #1 overall seed lose takes over the headlines and takes the attention away from Georgetown and the Big East's disaster. But knowing that the bracket of death just wasn't that bad may make this hurt worse. I can't tell anymore.

It might have fired up his team, and it might have given the refs some reason to call the worst lane violation I've ever seen. That or the ref had money on the game because that was just absurd.

I appreciate the thought, but no. You give any tournament team wide open looks and let them get comfortable and confident, you're in huge trouble. Doesn't make the opponent great, even if they played great last night.

I can't read a newspaper or listen to any kind of sports show for the next 3 weeks at least.

After last Saturday's game, I walked about 50 blocks back to my sister's to walk it off. I may need to walk to Canada tonight.

There are so many "worsts" about this, but they have completely lost their poise as well. The last two charges on Greg were just foolish.

This season has brought some incredible highs and tremendous lows. But I can't imagine feeling lower than this. I may or may not watch any more of this tournament. Wow.
