Well, interesting game. I'm really not ready for the heart attack Hoyas yet. Seriously, we couldn't get a warm up game at least? Give me time to stretch out the nervous system first!

The effort and hustle are there, but unless Chris and Austin heat up, this is going to be a long, long night.

Why did Ron Washington play Vlad in OF? That was a huge mistake--and especially the RF in SF--which is a tough field to play. At least he won't make the same mistake twice. Murphy is starting for Vlad tonight. Cruz will hit cleanup. sports.espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/news/story?id=5738051

The Lions just got screwed. Based on the rule, it's absolutely the right call. But screaming about the rule doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

What if Tech ends up with 3-4 losses in the ACC--will that "win" be as impressive? Boise's strength of schedule is NOT going to appreciate this. ;D Now THAT'S the ACC I know and love! Wow. I am stuck at work so did anyone how how VA Tech melted down? In reason #6,005 why we need a playoff, the transitive property of sports has a pretty limited value. This doesn't make JMU better than VA Tech. But it does add to the legend that Tech knows how to choke with the best of them. And the ACC will always be embarassing.

The luxury tax and the new revenue sharing through things like the MLB network and mlb.com are fairly recent. We still have a system of haves and have nots, and the Yankees still spend twice as much as the other "haves". (They also make a jaw-dropping amount of money). But now Florida can re-sign Hanley Ramirez and Tampa can re-sign Evan Longoria. So the competitive balance is better than it used to be. But don't forget that in the '90s the Expos had the best farm system by miles and miles, and they couldn't keep anyone. The Steinbrenner era covered the beginning of free agency until now. Things haven't been the same all the way through.

While we're on the subjects of ripping someone after they die and Steinbrenner's Yankees, I found Tony Kornheiser's obit of Billy Martin. I'd heard him talk about it, but I hadn't seen it before. It's not pretty. "My mother tried to teach me that if I didn`t have anything nice to say about somebody, I shouldn`t say anything at all. Sorry, Mom." articles.sun-sentinel.com/1989-12-28/news/8902170299_1_billy-shot-enemy-fights

The day after the All-Star game, the biggest wasteland in the sports calendar, always reminds me of the late, great Glenn Brenner. It was on this day in about 1990 that he had 8 minutes to fill and was reduced to showing rodeo injuries to kill time. Then he completely lost it. I don't think the full clip is available, but this is a pretty good highlight. Still miss the big guy.

It's not like anyone comes out of this looking good. But Cavs owner Dan Gilbert really may need to lay off the sauce. I get the frustration, but you probably need to have someone talk you out of using words like "cowardly betrayal". Sober up, buddy. This isn't going to look good in the morning. Let someone else do the ranting. www.nba.com/cavaliers/news/gilbert_letter_100708.html

This gets more in depth: www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/08/AR2010070803383.htmlLooks like Fox and CBS are out of the ACC business completely. They still have that strange deal with Raycom, but I can't tell if Raycom is going to keep the ACC tournament and Duke-Carolina. If so, it's a bit weird that ESPN would pay so much and would still be blacked out from showing the most marquee stuff on the East Coast. Still, if the Big 12 and ACC schools are doubling their TV revenues, it'd be kind of nice for the Big East to get in on some of that.

My God, this is embarassing. If he doesn't win at least the next three titles at whatever team he goes to, he'll never live down this ego-fest. Is there anybody who skipped college (or just became famous way too young in any field) who doesn't have serious maturity issues? I suppose it doesn't help to have a bunch of paid sychophants who will never, ever tell you that you are making a fool of yourself. To be fair, I guess LeBron just has ego problems and isn't in rehab or anything. But ESPN might actually be more ridiculous. They've used this for two months of cheap 24 hour programming. Now they are running a crawl crediting ESPN's Chris Broussard with "breaking" the story and claiming with a straight face that ESPN won't yet confirm it. Phil Mushnick's head is going to explode.

According to Andy Katz, a group of anonymous big shots stepped in to save the Big 12 and to prevent what was going to be a bloody turf war of mega-expansion. sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5286816Oh. My. God. This really is the Mob. Who is going to play the role of the hot-headed Sonny and destroy the fragile peace between the Families? Only time will tell.

So does Utah make it into the Pac 10 by default? According to Chip Brown, yes. I had no idea Texas could be this devious. But they've conned the Pac-10 into taking Colorado, a team no one wants and was actually losing money for the Big 12. Then they get a large raise in TV money and they get to start their own network. In addition, they will completely and totally control the new Southwest Conference or the Mack 10 or whatever they call it. Apparently you really don't mess with Texas.

If the Chip Brown stuff is true, then it sounds like the "mystery network" (the guess is Fox) swooped in to buy the Big 12 (now w/10) and paid a huge price for it. Apparently they did this to stop the full conference realignment/armaggedon. I'm guessing they did it in part to keep ESPN from eventually owning all of college football. But I must say that the sleazy finances of all of this are becoming almost impossible to follow.
More importantly, can we come out of our fallout shelters now? Is expansion over? Did we survive? And for how long?
On edit: Now it sounds like ESPN may be the mystery network. Maybe this is how ESPN gets it all. But I thought the 4 superconferences were good for ESPN. I've got no clue anymore.

Listening to Chip Brown from Rivals.com on the radio. (I believe he was the first one with the Pac-16 story.) Anyway, he says that Notre Dame is seriously listening to the Big Ten now. Not because they want to, but because they are concerned that they will be left out. He says that Notre Dame wanted to make certain that if they go to the Big Ten, then the expansion would stop at 12 with them. Apparently, the Big Ten said yes and Notre Dame is mullling it over.
This could stop most of the madness. But if Notre Dame turns them down, then get your fallout shelters ready. We're going nuclear.

I don't like the number of fouls called across the board either, and there are enough legitimate referee conspiracies to make Oliver Stone's head explode. But the Lakers had a lead at home with less than 4:00 to go, and they got crushed down the stretch. That seems to me to be the only important story of the game.

Andy Katz just said on Sportscenter that he had heard from a "source with direct knowledge" that Maryland, Georgia Tech and Vandy are also high on the Big Ten's list. In terms of TV markets, they would make some sense. That would shake things up a bit, however.

Thanks for all the help. Looks like DirectTV is best to see the Hoyas but the Redskins, that's a different story because of the cost. For the Redskins, if you can't or don't want to go with the Direct TV football package, I really recommend the NFL Red Zone channel. I think most systems have it now. They do a fantastic job of switching from game to game to show every time anyone scores, and they keep you up to date on what's happening in every game. You won't get a full Redskins game, but you'll know exactly what's going on. It's much easier than going to a sports bar, and there are no commercials either.
