Fraking Senators!!! They just voted to add a repeal of all the District's gun laws to this legislation. Now you might agree with the principle of this, and that's fine, but surely this is the DC Council's place and not Congress'. Isn't it Congress' job "to exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings"? And if so, wouldn't it be Congress' job to weigh in on the gun laws, ESPECIALLY if it thinks that the 2nd Amendment is being violated? (I'm pretty sure this amendment was the same as H.R. 6842, which the House passed last Congress: tinyurl.com/d8e9ks, but correct me if I'm wrong) Well there is a nifty piece of legislation called the District of Columbia Home Rule Act that you might be unfamiliar with. Nevertheless, I'm not claiming Congress lacks the power to do so, just that it's wrong for it to do so. A body that I have absolutely no representative in is messing with my local laws, which is frankly dictatorial. If someone thinks the DC gun laws are out of synch with the 2nd Amendment, they can go through the courts, or are you also unfamiliar with District of Columbia v. Heller?

I couldn't stop thinking about the Kansas song "Dust in the Wind" when the Priest did his "return to dust" spiel when I was getting my ashes. The insence must have been making me delirious. You're my boy, Blue.

I don't actually understand why students need their own government anyway (other than to pad resumes). Wouldn't an undergraduate student union serve everyone's needs a lot better?

I can think of a better way of showing I'm sex positive than sitting through a roundtable discussion.

Didn't Murkowski vote for cloture, though? DCist says she changed her mind after meeting with the only Republican I voted for in the last election, Patrick Mara (the DC Republicans support the bill). As for the merits of the bill, I support it, although share ed and Austin's concerns that it's probably unconstitutional. (Cam's rejoinder about the unconstituionality of my tax payments notwithstanding). Nevertheless, I feel that taking representation away via court decision will provide the political shame necessary for the constitutional amendment to become a reality. On the other hand, statehood just requires a majority of Congress.

I don't see why being a Yard opponent automatically makes one a GUSA booster, and that's certainly not my position. Nonetheless, the Yard significantly over-represented students in clubs to the detriment of those who weren't. The arguments made by proponents of the Yard Referendum (1999?) were incredibly weak, appealing to elitism (they specifically noted that those who "cared" would have more say) and a conflagration of "old" and "good". (incidentally, voting against going co-ed is not what I would consider a Yard achievement)
GUSA is certainly weak and ill-performing, but this fact alone does not make the case for the Yard. No Yardie I've ever spoken to has seemed to grasp this. Equal representation is a baseline for any new student government that might be proposed; the Yard by its very nature fails this basic test.

It was an older form of student government, where representation was determined by club membership instead of class. It basically disenfranchised anyone not in a club and elevated the power of those who were "involved". So it needed to be destroyed.

Michael Cera should, if anything, be doing the movie for free as a gesture of gratitude. He's been able to create a career playing George Michael in other movies.

If Old Man Frank Black were still around, he'd say something like... "Nonsense! When we elected the Yard President, we had no sorts of foolishness like this, because those SFS students didn't have the right to vote!"As insufferable as the GUSA people are, they were nowhere near as bad as the Yard advocates. The only time I cared about student government during my time on the Hilltop was when we voted down the resurrection of the Yard.

I always found the reaction of people from non-Catholic areas on Ash Wednesday to be hilarious. They literally have no idea what the heck is going on.

"We are Georgetown" This cheer evokes spirit and support for a team that may struggle or a team that may dominate. Regardless of when it is used there is no arrogance to this cheer. The Georgetown community is proud of all facets of our University. We are proud of the place our University has, has had, or continues to have post graduation in our lives. I completely agree. There is no arrogance to this chant. It simply reaffirms the Georgetown identity, something we all take great pride in. When we are down 16 or 50, I think this chant is just as appropriate as when we are winning by a ton. Those are exactly the types of times we need to remind the guys who we are, that we're always behind them, that we're proud, and that we never give up. If you don't want to cheer "We are Georgetown" at any point during the game it would seem to me that you are ashamed of identifying with Georgetown, and I don't think that's acceptable from the point of view of being a fan. Would you rather we chant "We are Louisville"? Saying the "We are Georgetown" chant is inappropriate when we're down is foolish. If the other teams' fans want to snicker, let them. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Do you take off your Georgetown shirt when we start losing by 16? No. I didn't think so. Or maybe some of you on here do... ...And here comes the fan police. Can we not have a discussion here without breaking out "you'd agree with me if you were are real fan"?

It would be nice to have congressional representation. Then maybe we could do something about strengthening home rule.

And that sound you just heard was 'tables manhood taking its last dying breaths... Let's face it, it was on life support for some time now . Tables' manhood is the sole property of Mrs. Tables. She's currently renting it to him.

I don't think Bando's point was that the crowd shouldn't be cheering when the team is down, just that that particular cheer is not apprpropriate when down by 16 at home. I see his point, though I don't feel too strongly about it one way or another. Yes, this. Also, while the cursing is of course horrible, I also felt that the entire arena came very close to booing the Hoyas tonight (there were times when it wasn't exactly clear who was being booed). I personally won't abide booing the team (silence I understand, and in fact encourage).

They all happened after the game at the Green Turtle. C2C and I were lucky enough to meet both Jahidi Hoya as well as Jonathan Wallace and Tyler Crawford.

Dear students:
This cheer is solely for when we are under 4 minutes and either a) winning or b)within striking distance of winning. It is most certainly not for when we are down 16 in the first half. The only thing such a cheer reminds the opponent is that we shouldn't be beaten so easily.
In conclusion, easy with the "We are Georgetown" cheer. Especially when we're freaking down!!!!!!!

Man, I hated this last episode. What happened to wise Ellen from last week? We're back to drunk and petty Ellen already? Where the hell are the number 2s? And why did they introduce a Caprica-Six pregnancy subplot if they were just going to abandon it so quickly? WTF? I'm sorry to say that the last episode almost put me off this show completely. I've invested too much though, so I'm going to stick it out to see how (if?) they resolve everything, but wow, that was just horrible. Especially after a few good "mutiny" episodes which, though they didn't move the narrative forward too much, really were entertaining. Those were followed by a necessary "exposition" episode, and then by this disaster. However, I see they are returning to the issue of "Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace.....WTF is up with her?" next week, and that bodes well for a really great episode to come. So I am confident that my interest will be renewed. But I recorded this episode on Friday, and it took me the next two days just to watch one hour because nothing of interest was going on at all and all anyone was doing was whining, so I kept flipping it off. These characters need a kick in the ass from Phill Gramm!! Finally, one last point. This new Battlestar Galactica has always been about more than just battle scenes and military operations. That is one of the reasons the show has been so great, and why I've come to enjoy all of the characters, dialogue and plot. But in the end, the backdrop for this show is still a war in space. Without that (which is what the last two episodes were), it's a lot of talk and not much else. The last few episodes of this series need to go back to that (i.e. - Cavil has to come back and soon!), or I think this is just going to fizzle out. Like you, nothing at this point can stop me from watching till the end. And the sublimely good episodes outnumber the truly terrible ones, so I'm not going to let this throw me. One of the old Buffy writers wrote this one, so maybe that's why everything went to hell (the pre-mutiny episode was written by Moore himself; writing means a lot). I think we have one more battle coming, and it has to be the combined Galactica/rebel basestar vs. the Ones, Fours, and Fives. I don't see Cavil seeing any other way, and if anything Boomer's treachery is only going to set him off (I'll bet my life that Cavil knew Boomer was going to abscond with Ellen and tracked the Raptor she took).
