Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. In my days on the hill, this was a very important day calling on the students to pray and to sacrifice. I would be interested to know how it is treated today and how many students do you find with ashes on their foreheads. For those interested, I have a blog talking about religion, politics and whatever else comes to my mind. Today the subject is Ash Wednesday. The blog is at uaneill.blogspot.com/. Yep, us old farts do stuff like blogs.

During my time on the hill it was called "Why do you have smootz on your head" day, and I worshiped pagan gods.

I always found the reaction of people from non-Catholic areas on Ash Wednesday to be hilarious. They literally have no idea what the heck is going on.

Heh, I had a roomate who each year was convinced that everyone had gone to some hot new club the night before whose gimmick was to stamp your forehead instead of the back of your hand. On the other hand, I also remember many pagan-Protestant students either openly pining for ashes or sneaking into Mass to get them anyway. It's the one day of the year it's cool to be Catholic! Unless things have changed in recent years, I wouldn't be surprised if it's Dahlgren's single highest attendance day after Christmas and Easter.

At UNLV the Newman Center has three Masses today. The one at noon was at the Student Union, and the large classroom, where they held Mass, was filled completely (100+ students, faculty, staff, and a three EPA employees like myself).

There are plenty, moreso even than the amount of people who wore beads yesterday, it seemed like a very tame Mardi Gras, but really every Mardi Gras here has been very tame. That's the thing about us, midterms both keep basketball AND party attendance down.
We are very lame.

Three years in a row, I was on my way back to DC after spending the Mardi Gras weekend in New Orleans. If you have any interest in going to that (and you should), I strongly recommend going while in college as that is a young person's game. I'm very glad I've experienced it but I don't think I'd go back for Mardi Gras for all the money in the world.

there are certainly a good, though not overwhelming, number of people on campus with ashes...but that is probably deceiving as, just like on a regular Sunday, the majority of Masses in Dahlgren today are evening/night Masses, which means most students probably won't get ashes until very late in the day. the 12:10 Mass was standing-room only though.
i was a little annoyed that the "main course" at Leo's for lunch today was...pork chops. with all the specially themed food/desserts they have for every occasion from Halloween to the Super Bowl, you'd think they'd be with the program enough to have fish today. i'm not saying take all meat out of the place, and there are plenty of non-meat options acrosss the other "sections" of the caf...but for the one section that really rotates meal options day-to-day, it shouldn't have been hard to put out fish today instead of pork.
i will say i found it kinda cool to see Vice President Biden sporting his ashes in photos from today.

That was a pet peeve of mine at Georgetown, too. Why the cafeteria at a Catholic school couldn't be told to serve a main fish course on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent is beyond me. The little cafeteria in my building regularly has fish courses on ALL Fridays.

There were two girls walking around today with ashes basically covering their entire face. Why or how they got that way, i have no idea.

The noon mass at Dahlgren is always standing room only. I don't know about the others.

As one of those people (we didn't really have too many practicing Catholics where I grew up) I definitely had no idea what was going on freshman year and it freaked me out a little under someone told me. Actually, I think it was Bando.

I couldn't stop thinking about the Kansas song "Dust in the Wind" when the Priest did his "return to dust" spiel when I was getting my ashes. The insence must have been making me delirious.

Good thing I didn't let the free association take me all the way to Old School. I would have lost it.
