I was at that game. I remember turning to my friend as Troy was strolling to the bench and saying "Game over." Whoops. Never underestimate the power of Esh.

No one is a bigger fan than I of fouling out the opponent's big man, but it's something that we rarely ever do. The overarching philosophy of the entire offense is that you take the best shot available every time down the court. I don't think you'll see us do something like give the ball to Monroe in the post for 3 consecutive possessions because Onuaku has 3 or 4 fouls.
One thing I do hope to see tomorrow is Summers and Freeman trying a few baseline drives. Either of those guys with the ball on the wing should be dangerous against a zone.

The best college basketball team of the last 5 years was the 04-05 UNC team that featured exactly one "front court banger" - Sean May. You don't need 4 power forwards on your team to win a title. Georgetown can win a title THIS YEAR with our excellent perimeter play and Greg Monroe. If we keep this core together next year, then we get even better, even without any new post recruits.

I appreciate the support. I have no idea what kind of NBA career Price is going to have, so I won't try to argue with you on that. However, I will just say that in college, Ollie was a career 26.2% three point shooter. Price is at 33.9% so far. Thus, I defend my claim that "Theres ... keviin ollie to knock down 3's" is a dumb thing to say.

Who let a UConn graduate on here? Especially one so typically uneducated about basketball. The Huskies have had an exceptionally efficient offense this year to go along with their strong, Thabeet-anchored defense. Dyson gets more touches than I'd like, but he's a volume scorer. Thabeet has a 60 eFG%. Price does everything well. Walker looks good for a rookie. Adrian is, at worst, a very good player, and has always shown flashes of greatness, which he maybe can harness this year. And in two weeks, they're adding Stanley Robinson who's better than all of those guys. And you want Kevin Ollie on this team? He couldn't hold Price's jock. But they don't have "heart," of course. Everyone knows that team that leads the nation in heart-per-possession reach the final four 92% of the time. Maybe Jason McElwain is available. Now I have to go gargle some bleach to get the taste of saying nice things about UConn out of my mouth. Worth it, though, because the only thing worse than a UConn player is a UConn fan. (And the only thing worse than a UConn fan, is a UConn coach.)

This is a revenge game for Brian Gilmore, so we have to watch out for him. According to his harem of sloots from the AU volleyball team who were sitting next to me at the Kenner league, he was upset that he wasn't getting enough run on the Tombs.

After this spiritual clensing, I'm ready to bury the hatchet. Suggestion: We immediately ink a 3-year deal with UMCP. 2009 - Comcast 2010 - McDonough. 2011 - Comcast again, but they give Georgetown 25% of the tickets.

I'm not going to defend Hubie in general, and even in this one particular case I don't think he's articulating his point perfectly. However, I do think he has a point, which I would phrase like this: Georgetown should make it a point of emphasis, in the natural flow of the offense, to occasionally (lets say 2-3 times per half) give the ball to Monroe in the post with the express purpose of him taking a shot. This is a good idea for three reasons. 1) These are high percentage shots. 2) Monroe is our most talented player, and we should look to exploit that. 3) Successfully doing this will cause defenses to collapse quickly when the ball goes into the post, opening up the other 4 players for easy looks. This does not mean we should turn into Notre Dame and have most of our possessions eaten up by one player in the paint. Run the entire offense, but make sure that we run this part of it.

Haters are most definitely in the house. Can't say that I blame you, but I'm not throwing in the towel on this season just yet. Some reasons for optimism: 1) Yes, we gave up a bunch of O-boards, as always. We also allowed 50 points on (I think) 63 possessions. That's a defensive efficiency of 79.4, a better than excellent figure. Bottom line - if we, despite our shortcomings, keep playing that quality of OVERALL defense, we will win many games this year. 2) Our zone offense looked about as bad as it ever has - and that is pretty bad. I did notice a few bright spots, though. One that particularly jumped out at me came when Julian Vaughn collected a pass in the short corner (a big soft spot in a standard 2-3 zone), took one dribble, and went up strong, drawing a foul. If I noticed this on TV, I'm sure JTIII noticed it when he watched the tapes last night. Hopefully, we refine our zone O as the year progresses to the point where there are more strong attacks than weak ones. 3) This team is absolutely NAILS from the stripe down the stretch. Unlike every other season of Hoya hoops I've followed, this year I have no worries about closing out a win in the last 2 minutes.

I'll take the win, but two major negatives stand out for me. The first, obviously, is the rebounding differential, but that's been covered ad nauseum. The second is the 7 minute stretch in the second half where we only scored 4 points.
Last year's team had exactly the same faults. Against Davidson, we went 9 minutes in the second half with only 4 points, letting them cut the lead from 17 to 2. Is this an inescapable feature of our offense? Last year, I thought the solution to these droughts was to not let anybody shoot until Roy touched the ball on the low block. This year, I don't know.
Obviously, we'll learn a lot more as the season wears on. But I'm starting to think it's possible we'll just have to deal with getting owned on the glass and suffering a prolonged 2nd half cold spell every game as long as JTIII is running the program. (Which, hopefully, will be the next 20 years at least.)

What kind of world is this where Dickie V rates Georgetown higher than most and Dook lower than most? Have the pod people started their invasion?

The only thing that will get national attention - for any school, really, not just us - is a win over North Carolina. Anything else is an uneventful result of two talented teams meeting. Also, in the 82-83 season we played 6 top ten teams, plus number 11.

Syracuse is simply not a top 10 team. 15 is the highest they could possibly be ranked at any point this season, but I'm skeptical. Boeheim, after all his histrionic whining, has finally figured out that the selection committee demands road games, and I think they'll lose to Memphis and Florida. Even winning their other games, those 2 L's will keep them in the 20's before BE season. Their biggest problem is that they're small without having an abundance of team quickness. I've never been a big believer in Devendorf, and I think we've already seen the best that Paul Harris will ever be. I think Flynn will take a step forward this year, but I'm not sold on Scoop Jardine. Ongenaet and Onuaku are role players at best. Rautins is a one trick pony. Certainly not a team to look past, but this is a 6 seed who is not going to upset the 3.

If history is any indication, it should be out on Monday. I'd guess we're 14th.

You caught me. I wasn't being entirely serious with my commentary. I realize that Tyreke has the skill to take his man and score on a help defender. I still think it's a funny picture, though. Especially taking into consideration all the talk around these parts following the McDonalds game -valid or not- concerning Greg's frustration playing in all-star showcase environments rather than a more structured, competitive game. With that in mind, look at Greg's expression and tell me you can't see a thought bubble reading "I can't BELIEVE he's putting that up!"

We need to leave the UMCP boards alone. They need something to do to kill time at their middle management data processing jobs, and trading half-clever barbs aimed at the school they couldn't get into because they spent too much time in high school huffing paint thinner and listening to Good Charlotte is that something. I worry about wading into the racially-charged debate taking up half this thread, but I will say that I imagine - for a recruit with some concerns about the racial makeup of the team, and how he might fit in the program - one conversation with JTIII would be enough to assuage any fears. And if a kid is spending too much time listening to "hangers-on" whispering in his ear that Georgetown is ONLY for black players, then I'm not sure I want him as a Hoya anyway. Regardless, if we land a string of white, asian, latin, etc recruits, or if we never get another, I'm sure that we will continue to field the best possible TEAM as long as coach Thompson is in charge.
