a win is a win...even one this ugly. lots of work to do, especially on the boards.

I will leave the constructive criticisms to others but I was impressed by the multiple offensive options we have. I like the potential of this team.

I'll take it.
Pros: G-Money: 14pts, 7 rebs, 4 blks. Sapp's calming influence when it got a little thick. Dajuan's awakening in the 2nd half. Wright's overall play.
Cons: Got killed on the boards. sense of urgency was missing until midway thru 2nd half. Early FT shooting. Dajuan slumber in the 1st half. Austin's bricks. Wattad and Nikita were non-factors. Omar built a small village tonight.
Overall: First game. They'll be fine after December.

Greg had to have more than 4 blocks -- looks like the home scorer is the same as last year.

Maybe someone who saw the game can elucidate on why we got 18 fewer FGAs while only being +14 FTAs, and why almost half of our FGAs were 3FGAs. Is that just what the defense gave us? Other than that, I was a little worried about the chemistry and from what I saw, we should get what we expected to get. HOYA SAXA

Rebounding, too many threes...if we had high turnovers, it'd be the same as last year!
Still, I don't know if we'll have too many shooting nights like that. Austin was way off, and that doesn't happen often.

Did they pack in a zone? Why did we chuck up so many 3's? And how in the name of Ryan Beal did Jacksonville grab 19 offensive rebounds against us?

Rebounding and first half turn overs were the only problems, IMO. JTIII played 10 guys, and it was pretty clear he was just playing with line ups. We need to figure this team out fast with the Old Spice tourney upcoming, so I don't think this game is indicative of our real abilities.

J'Ville is a solid team. That said, it was a solid victory. Very impressed with Wright's aggressiveness in the first half, and with Monroe's touch around the basket. Sapp was his usual poised self. Clark looked good as well.
However, G'town was just outworked on the glass. Monroe simply forgot to box his man out on multiple occasions, and Summers has to be more aggressive on the boards. If they play like that against a team like Louisville or UConn, they won't have a chance.

great to see 177 people viewing hoyatalk...is that a record?
No:
my initial thoughts:
monroe....looked great on both ends of the court. I recall people saying that at times he's disinterested...didn't see that for a second tonite.
summers... looked good in the 2nd half. I thought he stepped up when we needed him. he dissappeared in the 1st hf which is a concern.
wright....loved the 3's. thought he took it to the whole aggressively and made some nice plays. that said, his free throw is an absolute heave.
freeman...had an off game and looked very frustrated. I thought he looked good breaking the press but that he made poor decisions one he did break the press. he' like a freight-train once he gets going...needs to pull up and hit the open 15 footer.
sapp...is sapp. onions.
clark is soooo damn goodl love the kid. that floater in crunch time may have been the bigget shot of the game and was a thing of beauty.
vaughn...looked good overall. he is a solid and reliable replacement for vmac.
I think my brother said it best when he said "the nikita and omar experiment is not working!". that said, I do think wattad looked good on D....wish I could say the same for nikita.
I have no idea why sims didn't see the court...i'm sure I'll find the answer on this board.
good win.

Agree with others that Greg Monroe showed some stuff tonight. I'm looking forward to see how his year progresses.
As for the rest of the offense...most of the time it seemed our only option was to plow to the basket and hope to get a foul. I know, I know, first game.

I was actually really happy with a lot of what I saw: broke the press, played some nice D at points, Monroe looks solid, and I think Clark will fill in nicely. Austin had a rough night, but it happens.
my biggest negative: NIKITA--SEND HIM HOME. In 30 seconds, he had a carry, a turnover, and a foul. That was when we were up by 15 or so. Immediately, they went on a run. Omar also wasn't anything to write home about, but he did play a Rivers-style defense that I think might come in handy sometimes (See Syracuse at home last year).

Strange game (though it's a standard result for a first GU game). Thoughts, Larry King style.
Early on, it was out of a scene from early on in Hoosiers, when people weren't playing the offense. Lots of one on one. Monroe and Wright can do this against J'ville. They may not be able to against UConn. This changed later on and the offense executed.
Three point shooting was off. In many cases, bad breaks (but good shots).
Monroe's great. Nikita looked lost.
Pretty much recipe can be made better by adding cinnamon to it.
Ignore the rebounding. Georgetown always gets outrebounded, and this team is smaller than in past years. It's part of how III plays. It's not something to be worried about.
DaJuan had a very quiet game for a presumptive NBA player against a middling team. I still think he's the key to the season.
Everyone says if you want spicy, you should go Thai, but Korean food stands up well in the competition.
Wright's foul shooting will improve. Don't worry.
Matador defense became a tad too prevalent in the second half.
If someone is taking the last shot, I want it to be Sapp. Unless it's Monroe under the basket, I want Sapp to take it every time. His late foul shots iced the game.
You can mark it down as overrated, but don't date someone unless you like their smile. You can learn a lot from a smile.
Only at Georgetown do you talk about possible SecState nominees on the ride home after the game.
The book on defeating Georgetown remains pressing and zone. ESPECIALLY pressing. If GU scores 65-75 a game, losing six points on pressing is ten percent of the total to beat them.

Overall happy with the win - can't have too high expectations in the 1st game. Wright looked great shooting the deep ball, and Monroe was very good in his debut. Monroe's dunk on the drive up the middle was great - also thought he did a good job on D. I'd like to see him get it in the post even more.
Rebounding was by far the biggest negative - think we need to see much more Vaughn, and more Sims. Also, we need to run the break much more crisply.

For those who saw the game, did the team ever play big ? I mean with Vaughn at power forward and Summers at small forward ,or did Freeman play any at 2 guard position? What position did Clark play when he was in game 2 guard or small forward?

This game was pretty much par for the course for our early season under JT III. We've had flashes of playing really well - Michigan, for example - but for the most part, we are very rusty on defense and in running the offense. Plus, as in previous years, JT III plays EVERYONE. You can go out there like UNC, UConn and play your starters for 30 minutes, and build up a 25-30 point lead, or you can play 10 guys and practice your offense. JTIII is all about the latter. I really dont have a problem with that.

team rarely played the big line-up - much more 3 guard sets.

What position did Clark play when he was in game 2 guard or small forward? Clark was at two guard and point. You won't see him at SF. Like someone else mentioned above, a lot of 3 guard sets.

We need to figure this team out fast with the Old Spice tourney upcoming, so I don't think this game is indicative of our real abilities. I agree with this point wholeheartedly, but playing around with the lineups nearly cost us an embarrassing loss tonight. Secure the victory first, then get guys like Nikita some PT. I understand we are going to have young guys in there no matter what (and yes, I agree Omar was at least productive on the defensive end), but you can't play a guy who is a complete liability on both ends of the floor when you're only up 8-10 points in the 2nd half. Can't do it.
