Don't go knocking John Irwin - I was a former colleague of his in the New York County District Attorney's Office. Awesome guy and great attorney.

Actually thought the Hoyas acquitted themselves fairly well tonight. Thought they actually had the run of play for the first 15 minutes or so in the second half. Last half hour was a bit rough, with St. John's hitting a 25-30 yard bomb into the crossbar, another bender near the same spot just over the bar. A bit ragged on the 1st goal - gave them way too much space in the defensive midfield which ultimately led to a mismatch when SJU switched it to the left in the box. Keeper committed very quickly and gave himself up (not a whole lot of choice, granted), and the SJU player quickly turned past him and angled one into a nearly empty net. Second goal was result of Hoyas pushing up for a tying goal late - SJU had numbers the other way and calmly placed one home as we scrambled to get back in position.
Keeper was solid, forwards showed great foot speed, but thought they had trouble holding the ball at times when we were trying to bring greater numbers offensively. Midfield was a bit ragged centrally, but SJU has some wonderful players that can certainly make many struggle. Thought our backs were pretty strong - Nealis was a rock at left back, although looked like he suffered a slight injury during the scramble that led to the last minute goal.
As HoyaSinceBirth said, SJU is a tough place to play, and certainly were motivated given a loss to BU and an earlier tie to Stony Brook that knocked them out of the top 10 I believe.
Fun to watch - my eight year old daughter and I hope to see them again soon.

Can't believe it took me this long to get to this thread - thanks for the laugh RDF.....
BTW hifi - not sure your usage of "dog" and "fight" in the same sentence discussing the NFL was such a great idea....

So the semis and finals are not played at a neutral site? I guess it might be difficult to drum up interest if one of the teams weren't playing at home, but if Hoyas beat BC seems crappy that they'd have may have to continue playing on the road...

Madgesdiq
That game at the Spectrum in '92 was a blast. Got accepted to my first law school earlier that day, followed by the Hoyamotion trip to 'Nova. Great atmosphere on the buses on the way up and back, although I think your bus tried to take a keg from our bus on the way back if I recall correctly.....
My brother-in-law went to Nova, and I, also a '92 grad, was rooting for SJU in '85. So my hatred for Nova is restricted to things like Tom Greis, Steve "The Rat" Lappas, the six points in three seconds where we lost in OT, those awful slowdown games a few years ago in the BET.
It was a pleasure watching us destroy them in '96 in what I believe was senior day (Phone Card Felons, Part I Game)....
Did I miss anything Madgesdiq?

Jim Nealis is a stud - played in the town where I grew up. His HS came up short this season states only b/c the best team in the nation played in the neighboring county.
From what I understand he's a good kid as well.

To be fair to Phil Jackson, the guy's won a quite a few championships - anyone calling for him to ditch the system should be committed.

Yes, I was the crazy frustrated guy at 2:30 am after witnessing our last game v. SJU.
Doesn't mean I won't be in my usual spot at the bar pre-gaming before our next game against them.
Looking forward to seeing the usual friendly faces - my guys dTRAIN and Johnny Jones, GIGA, krukster, Jahidi...
Madgesdiq - I assume you'll be there after bailing on last game?
Sir Saxa - we'll miss you, but I expect a phone call before the game begins per tradition....
VictorSkyPage - haven't seen you around - assume you'll be there?
Let's hear who else will turn Cafe 31 into our own little bubble that will block out negativity tomorrow, and hopefully for the following four days....

Please don't blame the game on Wattad and Nikita. Trust me, for anyone sitting near me, I frankly wanted to see Wright/Sapp/Clark/Summers/Monroe as much as anyone given Freeman's (issues?) tonight. But Sims and Vaughn, IMO, contributed significantly. The 9/10 slot should be for spot-up duty, and for whatever reason III liked Omar given Free's unavailability (I guess).
Still hard for me to justify Nikita w/significant minutes, esp. if he can't spot up for three or hit FTs.

No, actually I didn't say "disastrous" or "self-destructive".
What I have said was this loss, given the magnitude of the game, was horrific.
Do you disagree?
