Does anyone really pay attention to the polls? Who really cares what Georgetown's ranking is?
Georgetown has not played a true road game against a good team yet. Talk to me in the middle of the month and then we will see how good we are.
The poll should read like this:
Texas Kansas Kentucky Everyone else

The poll should read like this: Texas Kansas Kentucky Everyone else We pay attention 'cause we're sports junkies who get high on any and all info about the Hoyas, especially if there are numbers involved!!! That said, I think each week's poll, starting today, is more meaningful than the last for exactly the reasons you cite---it's all about who you've played and how you've done against them. This week means a little because it shows the very beginning of conference play, next week means more (this is especially true for the Hoyas -- we'll have MQ and UConn under our belts for next Mon's polls), and each subsequent week means that much more because of the situational and absolute sample sets. I'd love for the first poll of the season, rather than the 7th, to come out today (kinda like the BCS standings ... but that's the only good thing about BCS, just so we're clear). Moreso, I'm happy with how CONSISTENT the team has been this year (ODU game notwithstanding), and am pleased to see that reflected in our rankings thus far.

Is anybody else annoyed that Texas now has a perennial power basketball program? I mean, its Texas!

C'mon, the polls are critically important - they let me keep track of the scores on the crawl at the bottom of the screen without having to pay attention to each game by computer! If you ain't ranked, you ain't on the crawl!

If you get ranked early, you stay ranked provided you take care of business. It's much harder to break into the rankings later.

So yes it is important to be ranked. That is how you get top tier talent. They choose programs who have had success, come on tv, and put guys in the league. RANKINGS are HUGE!!! When you are ranked, you come on tv. When you are on tv, you get exposure. Kids take notice. If you come on tv a lot, it means you are good (except Notre Dame football). If you are good, you get kids that can play very well. See how this whole thing works now?!

When you are ranked, you come on tv. This is demonstrably false, because TV selections are made before the season starts. You can argue that preseason expectations matter, and it is true that preseason expectations will often be reflected in rankings, but the rankings are an effect of those expectations, just like the TV selections are, so they aren't necessary to or even connected with television.

Well you could argue that being ranked the year prior effects tv selections the following year.

Do we really need to have the "Are rankings meaningful?" argument every week?

Final rankings that may impact tv and recruiting for the following year are based completely on outcomes of the games played on the court and who wins those games when it matters. Being ranked the first week of April is a little more important than being ranked the first week of January.

Good chance this week to move into the top 10. If we take care of business, K State could lose at Mizzou, Mich State takes on a good Wisconsin team, and North Carolina plays Virginia Tech. Syracuse probably won't lose to Memphis, but if they play like they did against Pitt then anything is possible.

We win both of those and this team might make a believer of me.

Rankings mean nothing this time of year. Talk to me in late February. These things have a way of working themselves out.
