Brandon Bass Elite travel team coach Scooter Owens says Georgetown is making a heavy push for five-star Latavious Williams of Humble (Texas) Christian Life Center.
In fact, the Hoyas are making a strong run against Memphis for the top spot on Williams' school list, and the Hoyas have passed Baylor. Bears coach Scott Drew watched Williams play last week.
Georgetown is in jeopardy of losing both Greg Monroe and DaJuan Summers to the NBA draft. Georgetown only has one prospect signed in the 2009 class, four-star small forward Hollis Thompson.
Georgetown is also pursuing Roscoe Davis, who is attending Goldsboro (N.C.) Charis Prep after failing to qualify academically to play for West Virginia this year.

graeagle anyone heard anything more about the kids grades recently?....i seem to remember a while back someone saying that it was looking more and more like he would qualify and that if he did we would show strong interest. Seems to me if we are making a push for him that his grades must be getting sorted out.....anyone know anything more?

Right now any kid that is targeted by Memphis (Williams) or Huggy Bear (Davis) means they should be recruited by us. Memphis loves the athletic players we so desperately need and Huggins loves the tough kids we also need, desperately. I hope we are in the running for both players and not either or.

Calipari and Huggins certainly get great players. But their methods and many of their kids are not necessarily Hoya friendly. Both coaches have a checkered history of kids graduating. From a purely basketball perspective, yes indeed. But when one considers academics, "inducements", commitment to school, character, the equation may look differently. This is NOT to suggest anything about the 2 or 3 players currently in discussion, just a general statement based on past practices.

Georgetown is certainly not immune to taking players with "checkered pasts", however, its what they do once the oportunity has been given. If they can qualify then I say let em in and give em a chance.

I'm with you ID, though just qualifying isn't enough--JT3 and the various academic people around the team also need to believe they'll put in the work to take advantage of the educational opportunity while they're here. I'll trust them not to bring in players that qualified but won't try in the classroom.

ID and TBird,
You make good points.
To me a kid's character and work ethic are more important that grades. Those kinds of kids deserve a chance. But it makes no sense to bring in kids who have no interest in academics.
Also, JT3 teaches a sophisticated offense and defense. If kids don't want to put the work in, or don't have the aptitude, they shouldn't come here either.
and, no. I don't think JT3 should toss the system that won the last two BE championships. He does need some bigger, tougher guys to help inside.... guys like Roy and Pat. Jr. He may want to tinker with the system....add some pressure D for example. But he would be insane to drop the system he knows and that has won 5 conference titles in his first 8 years as Head Coach.

Roscoe Davis is 6-10, 205 and is listed as a power forward. Latavius Williams is 6-7, 195 and is also listed as a power forar.

Why couldn't we get Pat Ewing Sr. and Alonzo to just crank out male children once every 3 years ad infinitum?

from what i've read latavious looks like a good compliment to monroe....an aggressive rebounder and shot blocker emerging jump shot.....a good scrapper.

While they may support this i doubt their spouses would. really we just should have made sure that all the guys from the 84 team had kids who would be in school at the same time (like now), but that is a lot of work to win a basketball game

Williams is up to 6'8 220 right now and has seen his stock rise a great deal.
I would liken him to the Patrick Ewing JR type of athlete that fit in perfectly. His strengths are areas we need badly and his skills that need work would improve greatly in the program.

And Rivals has him at #15 in the country overall -- right behind #14 Mouph yarou who sounds like exactly what we need, he's local, but he's headed to 'Nova. Still, Latavious. I like the name. Sounds like a Hoya. Getting him away from Calipari??
