Stating how SMU has gotten fortunate by landing Larry Brown and how Coach Brown has turned the program around after only 1 year. Norm's show is the #1 rated sports show in the area...I do not know if Dallas Hoya listens to it or not. Also the Dallas Morning news has been reporting on SMU's success.. To each their own though.

Ok. I do not live in the metroplex, so I got on the Ticket's website to learn a little. Norm Hitzges's show is on from 10am to 12noon weekdays. It is a two hour midday show when most people are working. I appreciate that he is the #1 rated show in that slot, but I can't comment at all on the competition. Gordon Keith is on morning drive time (5:30am to 10am). Something called The Hardline is on evening drive time (3pm to 7pm). Even if their ratings are lower, they are reaching a far larger audience than Hitzges is, and for a longer time period. I'd be curious as to how much coverage those two shows are giving SMU. If Hitzges is taking a segment of his show to talk about SMU, that's great. 15-20 minutes out of a total of 13 1/2 hours (if Keith and The Hardline aren't talking about SMU) is not very significant. In New York, Mike Francesa talks about movies and horse racing on his show on WFAN from 1pm to 6:30pm, and I don't believe anyone thinks that he is touting either of those pastimes. As for the Dallas Morning News reporting on SMU's success. . .where? Front page of the sports section above the fold? Or is it buried on page 4? Location, location, location. Are there any other sports stations in the metroplex? If so, what have they done regarding SMU? How about television news coverage? I guess my definition of touting differs from yours.

The internet is a wonderful thing. I learned that there are two other sports radio stations in the metroplex.
There is "The Ticket," KTCK (1310 am, 96.7 fm), on which Hitzges's show runs from 10am to 12noon. They also carry the Dallas Stars (NHL).
There is "The Fan," KRLD (105.3 fm), which runs G-Bag Nation from 10am to 3pm, in competition with Hitzges. They also carry the Dallas Cowboys (NFL) and Texas Motor Speedway.
Finally, there is KESN (103.3 fm), an ESPN Radio affiliate, which runs Friedo and Fitz (Mark Friedman and Ian Fitzsimmons) from 11am to 3pm, in competition for one hour with Hitzges. They also carry the Dallas Mavericks (NBA) and TCU football and basketball.
Here's what's interesting, and directly contrary to TJI's assertion that Hitzges "has the #1 rated sports show in the area." According to the Dallas News website, in an article dated January 10, 2014, covering the latest ratings period (November 7 to December 4, 2013), Friedo and Fitz won three of their four time slot hours: 11am to 12noon, 1pm to 2pm and 2pm to 3pm. They had a 5.4 share in the 11am hour, compared to a 4.9 share for Hitzges. Maybe math has changed, but I think 5.4 is larger than 4.9.
Just curious. . .have Friedo and Fitz talked about SMU at all in their #1 rated time slot?

As you suggested, I took a look at the Dallas News blog, and googled both SMU Mustangs and SMU hoops. In the month of March, to date, I saw a couple of game stories, an article about a Selection Sunday party on campus, and some articles about the AAC tournament and NCAA projections. Over the first fourteen days of the month, there were a total of nine stories. That's less than one a day. There were more stories about Baylor's basketball team. Of course, if you wanted to talk about football. . . .
I think we'll just agree to disagree, at this point, about the impact that SMU basketball has made, so far, on the metroplex.

Have to agree with This Just In from Dallas, Texas on this one. Larry Brown brings excitement and quick turnarounds to the program where ever he goes. He implements his system right away, gets rid of players who don't fit it, and brings in guys who can fill roles to fit his style quickly. he brings in a whole new attitude and culture that is infectious in whatever new community he goes to.

The fact that the ACC is going to Barclays is amazing news. At first, I was naturally a bit concerned about the competition, but I'd argue that it's actually a POSITIVE thing to have another premier college tournament at the same time as the Big East.
No Big East fans will miss their teams play over going to the ACC tournament and vice versa. But the fact that there will be many more college basketball fans flocking to New York around the time of the BET is undoubtedly a boon for both tournaments. I know if Georgetown got bounced early in the BET, I wouldn't mind checking out the ACC tourney is they had a great matchup (Duke-UNC, or two other ranked programs - or heck, rooting against Syracuse). I bet ACC fans would be the same way - if the BET had a nationally ranked matchup, ACC fans whose team lost would consider heading to MSG.
The Barclays development is a great thing. Not only because the ACC didn't take MSG from us, but because this will increase attendance at MSG as well.

And if you don't believe me, think about why things such as New York's diamond district exist. Having rival stores in the same diamond industry all on the same block actually drives much more traffic to that block since the sum is much greater than the individual parts. Just like people can go to the diamond district knowing that they will find some diamond they like across the many quality stores, college basketball fans will be able to book tickets to New York knowing regardless of how each individual tournament turns out with upsets, etc, there will be some great basketball at least at one if not both college basketball tournaments. A boon for both conferences.

This year thanks to Larry Brown...SMU had the 14th best recruiting class this past year. Now that is really hitting the recruiting trail to be able to get a top 15 recruiting class to come to SMU... A school that has not been the NCAA Tourney since 1993. Even gets NBA greats like David Robinson and Hoyas like Allen Iverson to come by practice and talk to the team too.

I'm watching a lot of these conference championships, and the only place I've seen so far that even remotely sounds like there's fans there is the Mountain West, but only during this SDSU-New Mexico game.

It speaks to the sad state of college basketball in general. Something I've been noticing for years. Increasingly we are a football-only nation. College hoops aren't getting anywhere near the support as college football.

Just tuning in but it sounds like the Garden tonight is the best atmosphere I've seen in these conference tourneys. Has it been like this all game?

The ACC will never replicate this atmosphere, even with a move to Brooklyn. Nothing compares to Friday and Saturday nights at the Garden with the very much alive Big East.

What's worse for the Cuse fans is that if they get eliminated early they are stranded in Greensboro, NC for the rest of the weekend. At least in New York, you get eliminated early it's still New York and there are plenty of things to do.
