Did Mourning win? - get to a final four even? Was anybody scared of him and the team like Ewing and co.?

Hah. This thread is now devolving to the point where for no logical reason whatsoever, someone is bashing Mourning for his lack of accomplishments. Classic. Freakin' classic.

The thread title paraphrases the quote in the Post article linked in the initial post: In that quote, Thompson is not necessarily dismissing Mourning. He could simply have been saying the kid blocks shots LIKE Ewing (who definitely had a different style than Mourning). Semantics arguments are FUN, aren't they? Moses was averaging 12 shot blocks a game at that points so I could see how Pops made that comparison. (*As of right now I think Moses is averaging 15 rebounds and 8 blocks a game)

Organic Arts, there is a fine recap of Zo's incomparable career on this site, I urge you to read it... www.hoyabasketball.com/features/top100/a_mourning.htmand Filo, I didn't mean to devolve, or insult anybody, just having fun standing up for my all-time favorite Hoya!

Yes, Pops' quote is ambiguous, the title of this thread is not... Change it!!! if you can't figure out why I titled the thread how I did (especially after the last few posts) I feel sorry for you.

With another 30 pages, this thread could turn out to be as great as the "Moses Abraham 2010" recruiting thread.

kc, I understand that Pops was reported to have made that comment to Abraham's handler, which you then transmogrified into the, in my view, regrettable title of this thread. Again, I don't care who made the comment, I feel the title of this thread unfairly ignores the immense accomplishments of my favorite Hoya, Alonzo Mourning. I have no problem with a hearty and hale welcome, a firm handshake, shoot, go ahead and give Moses a hug if you want. Lets just not blow pixie dust up his ass.

My interpretation of the now famous quote is this, after one game JTII said he blocked shots in the same style as Ewing did. He didn't use the words best since. He said he never saw anyone block shots "like that" since Patrick Ewing. Not necessarily a comment on best all time. We have 3 of the best shot blockers of all time in our program, we don't have to choose between them.
Heck if he can block shots like Mike Sweetney( 180), Othello Harrington( 201), RBB (255) or Roy Hibbert (259) I'd be more than happy.

I think Alonzo -- my favorite Hoya of all time as well, BTW -- is pretty secure in his accomplishments. I don't think we're going to diminish them here. On the other hand, if the mods or author would like to re-title this thread "Moses Coming to the Promised Land After All," I'd have no problem with that.

My god. Can't we get excited about picking up a good recruit and start a thread with a catchy title?
Regrettable? You'd think I just ran over Alonzo's first born. Would you rather the thread was titled "Hoyas sign three-star recruit who has been in US for six months and played one season of organized basketball."

Agree with kc. This is a non-formal discussion board. We are not creating an official almanac of hoya basketball with every post. Its fine to use the various forms of communication - such as sarcasm, exaggeration, excitement, and ridiculousness. I'm all for bold statements - lets rename the thread "Staff set to make Moses the best shot blocker of all time."

That's cool b52, as long as "factual analysis" is an excepted form of board communication as well...

I would say Mourning was the best shot blocker of G-town.
given that he was the shortest.
Mourning just had a certain skill level and art to shot blocking.
Ewing was 7'0,athletic, and ran the floor like a 6'5 wing-guard.
Mutumbo was good, but it doesn't hurt to be 7'2 either when blocking shots.
pound for pound, got to go with Mourning.
but Pops is probably talking more along the lines of how he was shocked to see a kid at the high school level do that, maybe? as opposed to when the G-town centers were in college?
either way, let's keep things in perspective here.
Given the hype machine of many of G-town recruits of the past in the JTIII era, especially big men, let's let Moses develop on his own and he will *earn* his playing time based on his ability to actually contribute on the court.

Between this and HoyaSouth's pronouncement's from on high (JT3 will FEEL HIS WRATH if a championship is not won next season), it's not hard to see why the level of discourse on this board has cratered since March 18.

Ah yes, accepted. Nope, not on purpose. Not even on porpoise. Guilty as charged. I will be the first to admit, I can be a class A moron. The best part is, I must have spent three hours wondering what it was about the term "factual analysis" that existed in academia that I was missing. Ah well. As my dear ol' Mom likes to say, "Miracles, shut the Edited up!"

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ...
I sincerely hope that Moses comes to the Hilltop, is as successful as his high school accomplishments would indicate that he can be, earns his playing time, fills some of the gaps in the Hoyas' game that it appears he can, and is part of _at least_ one of the next great G'town teams....if he leads us to the promised land, then it must have been meant to be!
For now, I'm just excited that he chose GU.
The mantra continues (Day 12): Greg stays, no one transfers.
