Rumor on the street (Pete Thamel's twitter) that Virginia Tech is looking to hire Mike Jones from Dematha as their Assoc. Head Coach. That could be disastrous for Tyrell Ward and the Dematha pipeline in general. Would Austin Freeman be a viable candidate to take over? Short term, VT probably becomes big threats for Ward and Rice. Long term, it could be a good thing. Freeman and Hopkins over almost 20 years isn’t much of a pipeline. Well this has me flipped from bummed to very excited, very quickly. Yes, hardly a pipeline, but I am optimistic about Ward and that opening up the pipeline for Pat.

Very nice pickup. Should fill in the Pickett/Bile role nicely. Small-ball 5 when Tim is off the floor. Welcome to the Hilltop Tre!

Aidan Curran (Hilltop Hoops) posted some rumors this morning: -Bile, Pickett, Blair: none are planning to return. Bile has gotten significant interest from European pro leagues -Tre King: transfer from Eastern Kentucky - we are the favorites to get him. 6'9 power forward/small ball 5. Good athlete, averaged around 15 points/6 rebounds a game. Shot 34% from 3 on fairly low volume. Seems like a very good fit for our needs at 4/5. Has played 3 seasons. If none of the seniors come back, we are back in the basement of the Big East even with Aminu and Baldwin. Wild, wild take. I am not in the camp that believes we land Baldwin, but with him in the boat, we are a pre-season top 25 team. He is a one-done Jalen Suggs, Cade Cunningham type star. Without him, I think we fight around the middle of the Big East all year with hopes to linger around the bubble.

Kadary Richmond, Syracuse in the portal. Loved him coming out and I would say take normally; but once you go to Syracuse you are dead to me. Pass.

My son said Blair was on his Instagram trumpeting the team’s new shoes with some comment like, “Let’s get it!” Doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but would love to have Bile, Blair and Carey back. Pickett is going to get paid somewhere. Pickett certainly should go get paid. Carey sounds like he is definitely coming back. Bile and Blair are interesting because they could probably go get paid somewhere, but one more year could be huge for them both. Blair - Harris - Carey - Aminu - Riley - Beard is a crazy good backcourt.

Martin looks like a pretty solid option, but with all of the factors at play right now - over 1,000 kids in the portal already, Hoyas are hot off the BE Tourney win, top 10 recruiting class and a wide open spot for a veteran 4-5 to enter the rotation - I feel like we should aim a LOT higher than a D 2 transfer.

And if this becomes the norm in seasons to come, it's going to totally change recruiting and as a result college basketball as a whole. 10 or 12 years ago it used to be that most schools had MAYBE one transfer on their roster at a given time. But if transfers are this prevalent, there's no way around holding at least a couple scholarships for guys in the portal each spring. There's just no sense in taking fringe prospects/2 star types, like the guys we took last spring, when there is always a Don Carey and a Chudi Bile out there with a lot more experience who can come in and make an immediate impact. Why painstakingly try to develop a player over the course of 4 years when you can just plug in a "free agent" who is more mature physically and a has a lot more experience? FWIW I don't like what it'll do to the game (terrible for mid and low majors, much less continuity, etc.) but it's pretty clear that this is where we're headed. Understanding these new dynamics and adapting to them will give us an edge over our competitors. I definitely agree that this is where we are heading and I don't like it one bit. To your point, guys like Holloway, Clark and Berger are going to have to start out at Robert Morris, Drake and Nicholls State and if they put up numbers, the big boys will snatch them up for their JR and SR season. I hate it, but that's definitely where we are headed.

Jones is a very good Blair replacement option. Veteran guy who can drill it from outside. I love Riley and Aminu as much as the next Hoya fan, but having a veteran option in the group would be great. One of the few things I agree with on the casual Hoya podcast, is the argument that it probably isn't good to keep relying on transfers year after year in key positions. Try recruiting players and developing them by putting them on the court. Transfers should be sought if you think you have a great shot at a long post season run but you need a key hole to fill. But many people here are of a mindset that we need to bring in multiple transfers again, even if means further delaying the development of underclassmen. If Ewing had brought in a high level point guard transfer this season (post grad or otherwise) ala Terrell Allen, would Dante had been able to get enough significant minutes to blossom to the point that we (and the staff) would have been confident in him running the show for the foreseeable future? I understand not "relying on transfers", but I think it is naïve to not understand the importance of the transfer portal. Look at this years top teams, Baylor has multiple transfers, Michigan has two transfers in their starting lineup, Houston has multiple, Alabama is led by Quinerly who transferred from Nova, Arkansas is littered with transfers, Gonzaga has a transfer running point. The portal is a fantastic way to make your team better, but I do agree that going into the offseason with the mentality of "let's go out and find 2-3 impact transfers" is a terrible way to build a program.

Myreon Jones has shot around 40% from 3 the past two seasons, including going 5 of 8 from deep against the Hoyas in November 2019. Hoyas were looking at him late in his high school recruiting in spring 2018. Jones is a very good Blair replacement option. Veteran guy who can drill it from outside. I love Riley and Aminu as much as the next Hoya fan, but having a veteran option in the group would be great.

Dug McDaniel needs to be higher on the list, either his list, or our staff's list. Would love to see they Hoyas stay with Dug and the two Dematha guys down to the wire. Need to get back into the WCAC

All we have to do us win consistently and impressively. He is mobile and has skills. He would develop significantly with coaching. He looks confident. Exactly, start winning consistently and it would not hurt for Q to develop into a legit NBA player. Show that Coach Ewing can coach guys up and get them into the league. Wahab is the most important player Ewing has had in his tenure. Pretty major local recruit who chose the Hoyas over some decent competition, should be the most important player on the team this year. If Qudus can show enough to get drafted next year, Pat can start making all the Big Man U claims he wants. Next up Ighoefe and Mutombo and then the floodgates could open.

These plus the fact that it is his damn decision so he can do it whenever he gets good and ready to. Never said it wasn’t his decision. And ya he can announce whenever he’d like. If he really wants to be the one to announce doesn’t this just increase the odds the info will be leaked and he won’t be the one delivering it? A lot of kids end up delaying the announcement so that they can come out with a cool video or graphic edit made for IG/twitter etc. Sounds stupid, but that can take time

Absolutely true. With Mac and Yurt that 7 man team makes the NCAAs, which is remarkable. Just keep these kids in the program for a few years and we will be back at the top of the Big East where we belong. I hope Ryan Mutombo sees that and realizes and he can push the Hoyas over the top. Wahab as a Junior will be the best big man in the Big East and then we can have Mutombo as a Freshman banging with him and filling in for him at times. The 2021-22 Hoyas could be special. I actually think that this years team will be last seasons version of Butler. A team that isn't expected to do much but surprises everybody finishing in the middle of the conference and making the NCAA (if there is a season). I know some people will say I'm wildly optimistic but hey give me a bunch of under appreciated players who have a chip on their shoulders and buy in completely to what the coaching staff is teaching them over a bunch of "5- Star" guys with their own agendas. I agree that I am expecting at least to be on the bubble this year. The main reason to me is Wahab. He really started to show out towards the end of the year last season. He could very easily be the best big in the conference this season.

I absolutely love Poplar's game, I think he would thrive at Georgetown. It's actually amazing how many of these big time prospects the Hoyas are extremely well positioned with. A .500 team who hasn't been to the NCAAs since these kids were in grade school and we have a shot to be a top 10 class in the country. Riley and Billingsley are kids who would have blown up this summer, Beard after a year at Hargrave is going to be ready day-1 (I think he would have been already, but whatever). Poplar, Muhammad, Mutombo, Reid, Holmgren, Kepnang, Malachi Smith the list goes on and on with guys the Hoyas have serious traction with. Huge testament to the work Coach Pat and staff have done over the last few years. The tide is turning on the hilltop. YEEESSSSS! Let's also be honest. This team would have been in prime position for an NCAA tournament bid (pre COVID) If it wasn't for some of the court shenanigans/bad decisions that three players got caught up in and injuries. Even then Coach Ewing had this team with only 6 players (not the top 6), two of them freshman, one of them was supposed to redshirt, in every game except at Marquette. I don't care what anybody else thinks, Coach Ewing proved he's a helluva Coach! I'm excited to see what he can do going forward. YEEESSSS! GREAT TIMES ARE COMING BACK! Absolutely true. With Mac and Yurt that 7 man team makes the NCAAs, which is remarkable. Just keep these kids in the program for a few years and we will be back at the top of the Big East where we belong.
