Lehigh has announced its recruiting class for 2004, and it does not include the LB out of Texas, so GU's odds may just have gotten better, although I presume the LB is still looking at other programs. Additionally, Lehigh's list did not include a QB out of Virginia that rated ** on the Rivals service, even though Lehigh was the QB's top target.
More as things develop..

I'm at work right now (ugh) so I can't access the Rivals board (all my account stuff's at home), but from what I recall this potential recruit has a solid 3.0+ GPA and a very respectable SAT score. I don't know much about Tex. schools, but it seemed to me he's a bright person who wants to continue the solid education he seems to be getting so far (judging by his current choice between Lehigh & GU and the Div-IA programs he was interested in, if memory serves).
Still haven't heard anything, but perhaps the Lehigh boards have some more info on him...

That LB out of Texas is out of Pearce HS in Richardson, TX. Runs a 4.6 40 and benches/squats 300/500lbs. Seems he's genuinely down to GU & Lehigh; let's hope he makes the right choice. ;D

Some apparent signings to date:
BU

CU
Scott Sleckner, Taravella HS, Coral Springs, FL.: LB 6'2" 225 4.6 Frank Viola, Rutherford, NJ: DL 60 tackles 13/loss 14/sacks.
HC
Adam Sadowski, Salpointe Cath., Ariz.: C.
FU
Henry Kirlew, Cypress Creek, Orlando, FL.: RB 6'0" 200 4.6 All-County
Kenny Jones, West Scranton, NJ: FB 6'2" 205
LC
LC listed as "likely choice" for DT 6'4" 275 All-County 89 tackles 18/loss 4/sacks. BBall + shot put.
LU
Pro style QB 6/4" 225 2000 yd. passer, says ball is in LU's court.
Having looked at the Rivals board, it appears GU & LU are competing for a LB out of Texas, who aspires to D-IA, rather than D-IAA. Would be nice to edge out one of the established Patriot League powers for a nice recruit.

For my part, I think DL is an area of concern. Seems to me the staff raided the DL for some big bodies to try out on the OL last off-season. While that's perfectly understandable (a solid OL will, theoretically, help minimize any deficiencies in your D by keeping them off the field more), I think there's a real need to beef up the DL. Until the O gets consistent, just moving all the talent to the OL is like robbing peter to pay paul: there's too many things going wrong on O for bolstering the OL to be a salve, so you might as well ensure that your D has a chance.
Perhaps the good news is that DL is the only area that appears to need reinforcement. Losing Clarke and Frontzke hurts, but Ononibaku looked like a playmaker, as did much of the secondary. I'm thinking a little more DL help could go a long way to making everyone behind it better.

And finally, from the Baltimore Sun... Shawn Frederick, Wilde Lake OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR "He's of the best offensive linemen I've ever coached," said Wilde Lake coach Doug DuVall, who just completed his 31st season. "I've had a number of college scouts tell me he is the best technique kid in the state." A three-year starter, the 6-foot-4, 255-pound Frederick played guard and tackle this season. He also played nose guard on defense, was the Power-I back in short-yardage situations and was a member of the special teams unit. Frederick is mobile for his size and an excellent run blocker. He also is accomplished off the field, serving as Student Government Association president with a 3.6 grade point average. A returning first-team selection, Frederick will play for Georgetown next fall. www.sunspot.net/sports/highschool/bal-sp.hooff09dec09,0,375067.story?coll=bal-hs-football

Next on the list (in reverse chronological order) is...
Jerome Brown
Thomas Edison High School
Offensive Tackle
Height: 6'5" Weight: 285 pounds
Brown played Varsity football for 3 years. This season he was the youngest senior on the team, and just turned 17 on November 19th. Played strong side Offense Tackle, the team went 5-5. Brown was interested in Maryland and UVa but figured that Georgetown was better for his future. At the start of his recruitment, Brown was not interested in Georgetown because he wanted to be at one of the bigger schools. As Brown found more information about Georgetown it brought the school to the forefront of his recruitment. Brown has a GPA of 3.7 and is ranked 33 in his class.
Edison's record for this year was 5-5, last year it was 9-1 and year before 7-3. Edison had been the defending National district champioons 3 years in a row but lost it this year to Yorktown. Brown was voted the 'team' award and 'coaches' award for football. Brown played basketball his freshman year. Brown has participated in outdoor and indoor track throughout high school, competing in the shot put and discus (was named 2nd team all district asa sophomore year). Brown has made the honor roll every quarter since freshmen year.

Thought I'd recap some of the recruiting news from the old board before it goes bye-bye, so let's start with:
Shotwell selects Georgetown By BRIAN McNally Journal staff writer
St. Stephen's & St. Agnes senior Mike Shotwell said Monday he has committed to play football at Georgetown. Shotwell, a four-sport athlete for the Saints, chose the Hoyas over offers from Brown, Bucknell and Dartmouth.
``I went down there [last week] to visit and meet the team and the coaches and I loved it," Shotwell said. ``It's close to home and my parents can go to all my games so it seemed like a place I needed to be."
Shotwell, who played linebacker and running back for St. Stephen's , rushed for 400 yards and scored 11 touchdowns as the Saints finished 4-6, losing to Collegiate, 14-13, in the Virginia Independent Schools League state semifinals. He will likely play outside linebacker at Georgetown, a I-AA school that competes in the Patriot League. Georgetown announced yesterday that head football coach Bob Benson signed a five-year contract extension through the 2009 season.
Five Northern Virginia athletes were on the roster this past season for the Hoyas, who finished 4-8 overall, 1-6 in the Patriot League, including fullback P.J. Cameron (Lee '03), linebacker Jackson Dismukes (Marshall '01), offensive lineman Mo Steward (Gar-Field '03), defensive back Derrick Deese (West Springfield '03) and defensive lineman Steve Cummings (Langley '03). Shotwell, who spent his freshman year at Lake Braddock, ran track last spring and played varsity lacrosse for two years at St. Stephen's before taking last season off. He returns to the sport this year and will serve as one of the team captains.
Shotwell has also excelled as a wrestler for the Saints after taking up the sport for the first time as a junior. He compiled a 24-9 record last season at 189 pounds, finishing second in the Interstate Athletic Conference, third at the Virginia Independent Schools Wrestling Association state tournament and eighth at the prestigious Prep National tournament in Lehigh, Pa.
``That was unprecedented for someone who hadn't wrestled before," said St. Stephen's wrestling coach David Hooper. ``I've never seen a more natural wrestler than Mike Shotwell." This season, Shotwell is 18-2 and ranked third in the Journal's wrestling poll at 215 pounds. College wrestling coaches have inquired about Shotwell, according to Hooper, but football is the sport he's been playing the longest and he didn't want to give it up.
``I've been playing football my whole life and it's been the sport I've excelled in the most," Shotwell said. ``It's just always been a part of me. I'm glad I get a chance to keep playing."

Props to Ian Rapoport of the Birmingham News for voting GU #1 in the AP poll.
I can only assume that if the Hoyas beat 'Bama handily, we'll have this vote locked up until we lose, right?

Ring up another one - good luck, Dave.
I'd stuff the ballot box if I didn't think it would jeopardize his chances...

One's thoughts have to be with his family and UNC Athletics family as well. A little about the man...
I hate these tragic losses that put it all back into perspective.

You're going to have bad shooting nights every once in a while. Hopefully this is the last one until next season. Syracuse made the Hoyas work, and the Hoyas made increasingly poor decisions as the game wore on.
Something like this has been coming for a while now - difficulty keeping Hibbert involved, leaning on amazing work by Green, Wallace, or Sapp to bail out an otherwise lackluster offense. I like that there are different guys who can step into the gap and by doing so make a huge difference, but I think a letdown like this is has been waiting in the wings for a couple of weeks now.
No matter what, I'm proud to be a Hoya fan tonite. Grumpy, but proud. Give the nod to a good game by the hated 'Cuse and lets move forward.

Rivers hating has got to stop. Rivers continues to provide exactly what is expected of him at this point. Don't forget that Rivers hit the 3 to close the 1st half and keep the Hoyas close.
This game started slipping away when that Ratfaced-kid hit his second 3 early in the 2d half.

I saw the threads. Clowns would be seething about Field's cornrows were he playing elsewhere. Nitwits like MoTownPanther, panthertooth1, WilkesBarrePanther, & Pitt83Panthers are the reason racism hasn't gone the way of eugenics.

Lead story on ESPN: Top Dogsespn-ak.starwave.com/photo/2007/0224/ncb_ap_georgetown_412.jpgNo. 12 Georgetown took control of the Big East regular-season race with a 61-53 victory at home over eighth-ranked Pittsburgh. The win was the Hoyas' 11th in a row. The Panthers had won 14 of 16. Story[/u][/url]" Please do not load images directly to the board - it chews up bandwidth and slows things down... thanks.

I just happened to have seats for tonite's game among a bunch of Mountaineer fans. I love hearing those EDITEDs cry. How the heck do they get all those 200 & 400 level tix, anyway?
What I've really enjoyed, however, is how poised the team has been at crucial points in the game when momentum could really shift. Plus, EVERYONE was passing like a champ. The Washington Generals would have looked less hapless at times than those Knee-ers.
With the way the Hoyas played tonight, I'd like their chances against any of the teams in the top 10. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the effort these Hoyas have given us over the past two weeks.
Thanks, Hoyas!

I think some of this will even out once conference play comes around and JTIII stops tinkering with the lineups. As far as I can tell, he's still trying to get a sense of who's ready to step up and play a bigger role when the Big East schedule kicks in.
It's still early yet. I agree that it is troubling that no one has stepped up in the backcourt to fill Ashanti's or Darrell's shoes, but that would be a pretty tall order. Maybe Thornton could have done it, but we'll never know. Hopefully, these guys get it figured out soon enough.
