ah nope stand corrected Apple will be on corner of Prospect and Wisconsin (1229 MSt). Think it was floated around last summer and then Nathan's extended the lease. I am sure a Nike store store or something will move in (there already is a North Face arriving), it seems thats the direction M Street is heading these days...
"Bowman! Wow! Woo hoo! Unbelievable dunk! This time from the right! with authority! On the poster - but on the right side! The highlight of this party! Ouch!"
NHL fans may have more college degrees - mostly b/c most fans reside in the cold hockey states/Canada where in general more residents have degrees I suspect (no internet verification)
I agree the CAPS have really gotten me into hockey again - the problem with hockey is that there are fewer stars - its not like Ovechkin is playing every minute the entire game, its a lot easier for him to go scoreless, etc - plus its team style like soccer doesnt lend itself to that. So I am less likely to know the good but not great players on other teams and root for them personality wise or skill wise like I would for an NBA team lets say. Like soccer, it is more likely as a fan I will root for a home team then be excited about another game. I think the rule changes open things up and it will be easier to root for other hockey teams in the future though...
That said, regular season hockey games may be preseason, but they are (at least in DC) one of the more exciting sporting events one can go to - great team, great owner, constant action, knowledgeable and involved fans.
I agree - the curator of the American Indian museum, rathe predictably, was less than inspiring.
Norah O'Donnell also spoke that year at Convocation - that was something to behold. I think she spelled out D-R-E-A-M or something like that and used each letter to riff on a word of inspiration...
Had a chance to view his last six minutes or so of his playing time...during which he collected fouls 4 5 and 6. 4 was a blocking foul that to most looked like he was in decent position and showed good (but agressive) awareness by Hibbert to get in position. 5 was a really good agressive clean block that left the commentators wondering why a foul was called. Made a great rebound and 1 and gave a Hibbert yell and strut. He was left in the game despite 5 fouls but a couple of minutes later made a silly foul (6) on Caron Butler as he made a drive. Looked upset he had to leave the game. Larry Bird was at the game... Seems they are getting more content on just seeing what he can do down the stretch...overall looks a lot less stiff than in college I have to admit, though he doesn't look like he will be a dominating rebounder (but most of the rebounds went his teammates way).
Watching highlights from that Duke game (above), two things stand out for me. One is that we had consistent (ok, pretty damn good) three pt shooting betwen bowman owens, green, wallace, cook, etc. The players we have recruited should be consistent three pt shots, but aren't yet.
Also, even without Hibbs Green stands out as being able to finish by the basket, something our bigs are still developing. On paper though, our team has athletic talent - one hopes they develop the consistency and grow into the offense some more.
But yes, some great off ball cuts as well - hopefully we see more of that soon.
Sapp also hit a heave three pt shot against St. Johns (last year I think)...I just remember the announcers saying NYC was his playground and then he once again drained a beyond half court heave. Awesome.
As for the luck part, we had clutch shot after clutch shot in closing moments of games last year and in general the lat two years...a lot fewer heartbreakers. This year I feel we get outscored in the second half consistently. It will be interesting to see whether the previous' years teams had "it" and this team doesn't, or if they can learn to hit clutch free throws against Marquette (Wallace), drain a shot against Louisville (Summers - although he did hit a three in OT), block a WV layup (Ewing) or even score a game winning dunk against Notre Dame (Hibbert). CW can be that guy and has shown us the skill and determination, just not consistency (which is where Sapp's suffered all year).
Not to relive the past, although it is comforting at the moment, but part of the agony this year has been the stark contrast between last year's team and this year's - BE experience and Ewing (the player or the energy). There has just been too much of a dropoff rebounding and defense and energy wise from him to our current forwards, and I am praising how vital Ewing was more than taking a stab at our players. CW has different qualities than Wallace, and long term may be more effective, but taking a Ewing out of a lineup to me means that this year's players have to make up a hole that was filled by a versatile, high energy, agressive, uber athletic player. Which is asking a lot of new players/players out of position. Where a player like Monroe (who may never be a high energy, uber atheltic player) can make this up is offensively by smarts and learning his role in the offense (for example, not overpassing) but it looks like this will take more time (whether it is bc of the system is another matter). However, after watching the progression of games this season, it does seem players are what they they are, and that is what concerns me b/c we lack that rebounder, excepting a gift from the recruiting gods soon. However, I am ironically encouraged by how simple many mistakes we make are to fix, and that a player (such as Hibbert) can develop skills if they aquire or inherit the correct determination.
Bottom line, this team's record may be not that far off from modest estimates 9 months ago, but consistency, smart plays and player development have suffered more than expected. I trust that these are JTIII staples not just abberations of the players he previously inherited, but proof will be in the pudding by next year I think, with hopefully (good) signs this post season.
"Nice that he talks to Greg - will probably tell him to stay in school because 4 minutes of playing time on a lousy team against an even worse team isn't that fun and isn't going to build his resume for the next contract."
Like one poster said, we can also always hope Mourning comes back from South Beach area and coaches Greg up...though that would be a decent time commitment.
"Judging by the other night, there's no way of telling if that was the play that was called for or if the set play was just chucked out the window by the players."
Either way, at this point you have to hold a coach responsible (and I hope JTIII takes accountability as well). Either it is a bad play in my mind or it was ignored and the coach is not able to do his job, which in the grand scheme of things, alarms me.
Up 5 with 37 seconds left. Our ball and at the line shooting. Miss the shot, commit a foul, put the other team at the line. SH gets two. Dribble to the the half way line, turn the ball over. SH scores. Dribble to the half way line, turn the ball over. Ugh.
I think last night we didn't shoot well, but I was more upset by our execution. Northwestern, who has been competitive in the Big Ten their last several games (yeah, insert Big Ten sucks comment here) has been playing well together. They would kill to have the talent we have. Yet last night was a comedy of mental errors and complete lack of concentration. I think a down crowd and somewhat snowball effect could have contributed the collective psyche, but players like Wallace helped their team by playing to their strengths. We have great strengths on our team, and used together well that should be enough to win games against most competition. I'll have to live with getting outrebounded perhaps, but not with leaving a WV jumper open several times ina row on the same play, or overdribbling, or trying to force the break when it is not there or trying to thread a needle baseline pass. Those things should be correctable (although born of frustration), even on off shooting nights the basic IQ we recruit for deserve to be there.
