With the exception of Pat Riley, are there any names on this list that are bigger than John Thompson? And yet they leave him off.
That quote alone, in its structure and its content, demonstrates who has been most influential on him.

That quote is annoying too. I realize this is from Boston so they would highlight his HS days there, but there were four VERY important years between HS and NBA, four years that would probably be more relevant to his coaching abilities then HS.
Anyway, why do you guys think he hasnt gotten hired? The only thing i could think would be a belief he would be too focused on big men and not be able to develop guards. But the opposite could have been said for Isiah Thomas (bad example i suppose because he isnt in the NBA anymore)

Marc Spears it the Globe Celtics' beat writer and obviously has access to Pat because of the ongoing series. As for leaving Thompson off the list, I assume the list was comprised of NBA coaches, who would be the most likely to have the ear of those who might hire Ewing. I doubt very highly that Spears has anything against Thompson.
Big man bias aside, it is curious he has not gotten an interview yet.

How many NBA assistants have been in the league longer than Patrick and never gotten a call? I imagine quite a few.
That said, I imagine he's viewed as a big man coach only who has only been around to do that. That's going to limit your opportunities.

Pat has always battled a perception amongst a fair percentage of the public that he is nothing more than a huge physical force of nature and that he has no brains to go with the brawn. It’s a grossly unfair and inaccurate characterization but it does exist and I wonder if it affects his standing amongst the league’s GMs and owners.
Faint praise from the Magic GM probably doesn’t help either: “He picks up things fairly quick.” That’s almost an insult for a Hall of Famer…

Perhaps there is lingering resentment in corporate offices from his rather successful four-year stint as President of the National Basketball Players Association, during which the league lost part of the 98-99 season (& the All-Star game) to lockout. Really, they should look at this as a strength (there are plenty of organizations who offer top positions to successful folks from the other side), but they may also see it as a continuing hurdle, since coaches are often at odds with ownership over personnel issues, etc.

I thought this article would be about Pat's take on Saturdays Mavs-Nuggets game.

I thought this article would be about Pat's take on Charles Smith, circa 1993.

The talk radio crowd thinks a coach will be fired?! For the record, I am a "big" sports-TALK radio guy. I have it on pretty much whenever I can, whether it's getting the kids ready for school in the morning, on the way to work or at work when there aren't any customers. I am NOT a bit talk-radio guy aside from that though. Not that I am looking down in some way on those that enjoy it, but I just personally don't enjoy political or current events discussions. I listen to the radio for 2 reasons: to be informed and/or to be entertained. That's pretty much it. Political talk or other such discussions on related current events do neither. In any case, if you want to consider my suggestion that Stan van Gundy will soon be Stan van Gonedy ... feel free. Are you here to be informed or entertained? That's up to you.

Speaking of Ewing: He has guarenteed a Magic win today, with his history of guarantees I am feeling better about my celts today; Patrick Ewing recently guaranteed that the Magic will win Game 7 in Boston on Sunday. "Patrick Ewing did that? We feel great about that," said Celts coach Doc Rivers. (Ewing famously made numerous guarantees as a player that he couldn't back up.) Sunday's game will be just the third Game 7 in Magic franchise history, while the storied Celtics are 20-5. www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2009/05/17/predictions_dont_come_into_play_for_game_7s/?page=1

Pretty difficult comment to understand from Ewing. It's dumb for a star to guarantee victory. It's even dumber for a role player or coach to guarantee victory. I'm not even sure there's words for an assistant coach guaranteeing victory.
If they lose, it's another failed promise from Ewing. If they win, the focus will be on the performance of the Magic players, and any mention of this guarantee will be in passing and probably in the context of some snarky remark about Ewing's guarantees as an NBA player.
If he was looking for a call as a head coach, this remark isn't helping.
