Pomeroy's new rankings have us as the #2 team in the country which is what happens when the computer tries to reconcile us beating by 62 with the same team that took Michigan to overtime. Why do I feel that we are marginally overated by this ranking? kenpom.com/rate.php

Jeff needs to make the 15 foot jump shot off of movement to become an elite level player. He has become very effective from 3 as a catch and shoot scorer, but when he is curling off a screen or is forced to move sideways when shooting, he is probably shooting under 15 %.

Omar has a Hoya future. After the game the Tennessee players - Omar is from the Knoxville area - were quoted as saying that they were not surprised by his shooting and that when they play with him in the summer that he is a go-to guy at the end of games because he will make the big shots.
Sitting behind the bench against Tennessee, you could see the rapport he has with his teammates. After he hit his third 3 and UT called timeout the rest of the team was mobbing him and he was trying to calm them down. He said something like "cool it dudes we have the rest of the game to play."

A short history of the Maryland Georgetown rivalry.
Prior to John Thompson Jr's arrival at Georgetown for the 1972-3 season The Hoyas and Terps had played annually for 26 straight years winning 8 of those games. By Thompson's arrival, Maryland seemed to be on its way to fullfilling Lefty Driesell's dream of becoming the "UCLA of the East". Maryland and ACC basketball absolutely dominated the DC metro area and Maryland's overtime loss to eventual National Champion NC State in the final of the 1974 ACC tournament is still considered one of the best college basketball games ever played.
The Hoyas were second class citizens in the DC area, and even as we began to enjoy some national success making the NCAA in 75 and 76 and the NIT in 77 and 78 (and being nationally ranked in 78) we could not beat the Terps. Even in 78 when we were clearly a better team Maryland won - helped in no small part by an officiating crew that took the concept of the touch foul to new levels. As Hoya fans, we had an appropriate level of resentment towards Maryland who belonged to the preeminent league in the country and who we could not beat.
Then, with the arrival of Sleepy Floyd, things changed abruptly. In only his second game as a Hoya, Sleepy scored about 27 (it would have been 37 if we had had the 3 point line) and we beat Maryland by three. The next year we beat them twice, including a 6 point win in the regional semifinal against a Maryland team with two All American forwards (Albert King and Buck Williams).
And then we stopped playing each other, and the Hoyas went on to dominate the 1980's, the Big East and its ESPN TV coverage eclipsed the ACC and Maryland fans got to enjoy the inferiority complex. We have played twice since then, first in the 1993-4 regular season and then in the 2001 Sweet Sixteen, both Hoya losses. A lot has been written about the reason's we haven't played, but the reality is that we have not beat Maryland in 28 years.
IT IS TIME!!!!

While I am concerned that we may get massacred on the boards, Tennesee's guards continually get up in the air without a clear idea of where they are going with the ball and will turn the ball over a bunch. We should be OK if we can avoid turning the ball over on their press.

Ho was one of the nicest guys on the team, could hit from long distance and had more hops than any gu guard I can remember outside of AI. Go work HoBro!!! I was too young to see Horace play, but did any guard (including AI) have more hops than Demetrius Hunter? Sleepy Floyd had serious hops.

It's Russian for "Venson". Leading nominee for most subtle but most hilarious line ever on HoyaTalk.

Whether as a student, an alumnus or a parent of two current students I can state with absolute certainty that the one constant regarding Georgetown is its commitment to stark administrative incompetence. The failure to communicate this change in advance is, sadly, a tribute to this grand tradition.

Hansbrough may be out, so the matchup may be closer in Maui than it would normally be. Presumably his heart would still be available?

Jeff was also 3 for 3 from behind the arc. To me that is perhaps the most exciting stat in his line. Indeed. That was what stood out for me too. His assists are beginning to rise but he has to improve his three-point shooting a lot IMO. His rebounding needs work too. I disagree a bit on the three point shooting. Jeff started last year atrociously - something like 1-22 but then shot in the high thirties for the rest of the year. This year he has started 6 of 9. It is harder to read the rebounding. He leads the team in defensive rebounds but has only 3 offensive rebounds in 5 games. A big part of the problem are the offensive sets that typically have him setting up outside the three point line. His defense - on the ball - has been a real surprise, indeed close to exceptional. He has a tendency to do less well when he is playing against a 3 who moves well without the ball. He has a tendency to get picked a lot as does prety much everybody on OKC.

I would be inclined to give NBE the benefit of the doubt with regard to their ranking of Duren. There should be no question in anybody's mind that John Duren was a better college player than any of those currently listed ahead of him. On the other hand, Duren only played 9 Big East games (three of them in the Big East tournament). It is hard to rank him higher than very good players who played 7 or 8 times as many games. Don't confuse me with facts when I am relying on memory! But Duren was the FIRST MVP of the First BET! Wow... only 7-8 games? Including the BET? Saxa my friend your memory is fading fast. John Duren was the MVP - of the first Big East regular season. Craig Shelton was the MVP of the first BET.

In a stunning development, the athletic department continues to be unable to write an accurate press release. The press release refers to 12 nationally televised games, but the schedule listed below the verbiage has 16 games (15 if you exclude ESPN U)
