Going to be a tough game for the Hoyas at this time in season---but a great test of how they can handle pressure for a full game and how quickly they can focus on rebounding as a team and not leaving 1 guy back to fight against 2/3 opposing players.

We tend to play to our competition -- I think most talented teams do -- but if we play like we did today, playing against Tennessee is an awful matchup.
They press, and we still can't handle it.
They have a hyper athletic team that is a good offensive rebounding team, and we can't rebound offensively or defensively.
On the other hand, I think Pearl likes to play man to man, and that's a godsend, because right now our offense versus a zone consists solely of jacking up 25 foot threes. Oh, we got it down to Vaughn once in a hole in the zone.
We'll probably shoot better, and I think Wright will play better. But we have to play much better tomorrow or it is going to get ugly.

It will definitely take a better effort tomorrow. Ball control will definitely be crucial. We can not play an up tempo game with these guys.....Go Hoyas

We will be the underdogs for tomorrow's match-up against the 12th-ranked Vols, no? Do you think the crowd will be behind us?Somehow, I don't think it will happen.

This is when the season starts becoming fun.
I sweated through these first games (well maybe just a second of the Drexel game) because it would be terrible if we lost any of those. I sweated through all the games last season for the same reason.
Now here's a game that we shouldn't win, the first of many, and now we can be the hungry underdogs and show everyone what we got. I won't be sweating tomorrow, but hopefully yelling my head off

doug gottlieg actually did not kill us. i was expecting him to kill us but he said we were fundamental and well coached. he said the first 5-10 minutes will be very important since neither team right now seems to be good at coming from behind. Tempo will be huge. we need to run our halfcourt sets without turning it over as much as we can. Tennessee is all offense from defense so we MUST protect the ball. I am surprised at how good woolridge (orlandos' kid) has been so far for tennessee. Tennessee also has bodies-- it will be the biggest most active frontcourt we will have played so far. Good test and i am looking forward to the matchup. these games will help us in the long run.

Hopefully we got this dog of an effort out of the way today. More passes, better shot selection, using more clock before shooting all will help, but rebounding, rebounding, rebounding is the real key.
GO HOYAS!!!

we need quality contribution from the bench. that doesnt mean a ton of points, they just cant account for 7 turnovers and 6 fouls out of a total of 30 minutes and only contribute 2 points. He who dictates the pace will win. TN is an aggressive Defense, but they gamble A LOT, and they let anyone get by them. If Coach Pearl reigns them in during the half court sets they will beat us. If they gamble, and we don't get into a running match, we can beat them with our backdoor sets.
NOTE: Wichita St. was NOT playing zone despite what most may believe. It was a saggy man 2 man,

While I am concerned that we may get massacred on the boards, Tennesee's guards continually get up in the air without a clear idea of where they are going with the ball and will turn the ball over a bunch. We should be OK if we can avoid turning the ball over on their press.

In order to win, we obviously have to do a much better job on the boards. Our bench also has to be more productive. In 30 minutes of playing time, our bench was 0 for 1 from the field against the Shockers. That simply won't fly againstthe Vols.
On a positive note, Dajuan played his most solid half of basketball since he hit the his big shot against Louisville for the BE Championship. If he can put two solid halves of bball, along with Freeman and Monroe...we have a shot.

I think we were just getting confused about which defense they were playing. It might have been a match-up two three though.

Given our struggles to score in the half court, I dunno if slowing the pace is all that necessary. We've played well up tempo before, as well. I realize Tenn is more comfortable there, but I think we scored almost 20 points of our 58 fast breaking.

I didn't get to watch the Tennesse game, what kind of press do they use? Zone , man to man? The press we faced against WSU, wasn't really a press, they just had whoever was guarding the point come up and try to slow us down, so I don't think we can judge our press breaking ablities off that game.

it was a soft 2-2-1 that Wichita St was using..Tennessee plays more a man press, and looks to jump the ballhandler, but they run something similar to that as well, but look more for traps...what i didnt like was how Chris in the 2nd half seemed scared to dribble, and just punish the press.
Pretty safe to say that every teamt hat plays us from now on will not play man....Why Drexel did and got shredded, id never play a jt3 team in man-to-man thats how you lose. Zone confounds this team, except when we run that play at the top of a 2-3 where we man the zone shift off a ball reversal and the guy at the top dives threw the middle of the zone while it shifts after he swings it.

I realize Tenn is more comfortable there, but I think we scored almost 20 points of our 58 fast breaking. I absolutely agree, SF. So often it's said that Georgetown thrives in the slowest of games and can't hang against the faster teams, but it's the opposite that holds true in most of our losses/worst performances. When other teams can slow the game to a crawl/make the game junk, the Hoyas struggle (think the USF game a few years back, and then our escape in WV last year). When the "flow" is better, Georgetown almost always plays better, and we're hard to beat. Lost to Memphis in a runner last year, but in some of the most up-tempo parts of that game--the first half--we were going punch-for-punch. Then there's UNC two years ago, and we all know how that ended up. UT will be more successful if the game ends up with both teams in the 50s than both teams in the 70s (of course, they aren't gettin' to 70).

My impressions the morning after the Shocker Throw Away:
1. Austin Freeman is going to have a monster year.
2. Greg Monroe has the best footwork on both ends of any freshman center I have seen in years. Put that together with amazing quickness and he is the real deal. Most of his blocks yesterday came without leaving his feet.
3. The Hoyas missed a lot of shots that would have made yesterday's game a snoozer if they had gone in.
4. The Vols did not look all that impressive in the hallway of the Coronado Springs near where the HHC Thanksgiving Dinner was held. Thankfully, Bruce Pearl had a shirt on and was not painted orange.
5. This will be a tough game - the Hoyas will have to handle the ball much better and will need real contributions from Henry Sims and Julian Vaughn (who looked lost out there yesterday).
6. Many of the turnovers yesterday were forced passes that looked like a team that is not used to playing with each other yet.

i'm going to focus on the positive there are 3 things we're doing a lot better this year.
1) driving the ball to the hoop. last year everyone was bemoaning the fact we had no dribble drive offense. now we do.
2) turning defense into offense. We do this a lot better this year than last year.
3) FT% is up across the board.
