Because it was a zone. And the middle is open against the zone. We gambled that we would confuse them for even a second and that would be enough. All credit to them, they recognized it immediately. This is pretty much text book as to why our problems are about coaching. A team that misses assignments, has it's head up its but most of the time on defense, should NOT be playing a 1-2-2 zone on the final possession a 1 point game. In every situation, you know the guy with the ball almost certainly has to take 3-4 seconds just dribbling up the floor. All you have to do is stop him from getting to the basket and not let any other player be wide open. We could not even accomplish that. We gave a guy who wasn't even that fast to get the ball up court a wide open pass. Dumb defense, dumb execution. Story of the season. If you're III, though, you've seen us get torched off the dribble the whole game. The whole season. So, you know - as well as can be predicted -- that the dribbler will beat his man. So, you know you will have to help. Which is likely going to leave someone wide open. With a zone, there is built in help. And if the dribbler pauses for just a second (or gets trapped, and the trap was coming) you win the game. Provy did exactly the same thing when we played them there. And everyone sang their praises. It wasn't a 1-2-2. But it was a surprise 1-3-1 (and then a jump and run after we called another TO). It worked. Ours didn't. I'm pretty conservative with these things. I probably would have gone straight man. But I get it.

Right. He wanted quickness on the court. Honestly hard to argue it. Our man to man was so bad all night. They made a great play against it. We lost the game well before that one. Its more pick and roll communication. The problem with the defense was lack of communication. To defend pack and roll effectively you have to communicate. Even slow defenses can be ok with good communication, but our guys don't seem to chatter out there and move as a unit. If one guy gets out of place, everything breaks down. I think communication on the court has been the biggest issue all year, both offensively and defensively, but much more so on defense.

This season is not a JTII issue. Its a player issue. The have not made the plays this year. In fact that have made stupid mistakes in critical time all year long. You are right about that as JTII is retired.. but JTIIII has to get some blame as he is the one that recruited and is coaching these players. You cannot have it both ways, the losses only fall on the players, but the wins well that is all JTIII and the players.

You can't have average talent and average coaching and be above average.

Frankly, i thought there was like a 75 % chance we'd foul on that last possession as soon as i saw that DSR left 5 seconds I just didn't think it would happen like that.

Great grit and hustle by an undermanned team. The game was lost when they gave up 50 points in the first half. Riyan Williams froze with the ball at the top of the key late, but otherwise played well on D. Kaleb came in on D for the last play then stood and watched Fischer run by him. For those that constantly harp on crappy plays out of Hoya timeouts, the last 2 plays tonight were great. Pretty lousy crowd in Milwaukee tonight, a town held up by some as far better for fan support than DC. Basically empty upper decks. Nice to see Ike finally look confident on the offensive end. Finally, it's really sad that Bill Raftery speaks more highly of our team than 90% of the posters here. Really sad. Raf is paid handsomely by FS1 to handle Big East games, and knows where his bread is buttered. With the exception of the handsomely compensated moderators, no one here gets paid!!

IMO JT3 coached his but off tonight. He consistently put the players in great position to execute and make plays all game long. The offensive adjustments were outstanding in particular putting DSR in the high post. Also DSR showed great patience to allow the plays to fully develop before going away from the action which has not always been the case for him or Tre. Whether they successfully executed the play on offense or got the stop on defense was on the players.
Missed Bradley Hayes big time tonight to match up with Fisher as Hayes completely locked up during the game in DC. Also missed Trey Mourning tonight who was ill and back in DC. Govan has hit the freshman wall. He is making a ton of mental mistakes. Most of his mistakes tonight were on the defensive end as struggled to read the plays and anticipate the action. There was plays late in the 2nd half after Ellenson left the game where Govan was following Fisher out to the FT area instead of parking his but in the middle of the lane, opening up curl opportunities into the key for Marquette as that was most of the action Marquette was running down the stretch. He has also picked up a very bad habit of playing with his hands down especially in the zone defense. If he played with his hands up or shoulder high extended, he would have had at least 5 deflections tonight on drop passes to Fisher. Govan is also physically fatigued as well and that is probably causing some of the mental mistakes. He will be better as he gets himself into really great shape next season. Towards the end the season the players especially freshman their conditioning and mental focus all start to lag.
I'm going to leave Tre Campbell alone as Riyan Williams playing way more then him in the 2nd half and at the end of the game says it all. Also not a good look that the moment he came in the game with about 4 minutes left, his man dribbled up court never passed the ball and simply crossed him over and took him to the rack for a layup. Also tells me JT3 watches the film and is completely aware of the players limitations. I wonder was Kaleb ill as well as his minutes were limited.
One of the biggest issue of this team is an inability to communicate on defense. To many players are scrambling on ball movement that eventually leads to breakdowns and a wide open scoring opportunities or fouls on Georgetown and FT's for the opposing team in tonight's case Marquette.

If they really looked at how much these players under performed with this vaunted sophomore class he may just be in line for BE coach of the year honors.

I didn't see the game. What was with Riyan's foul with us up by one? If he doesnt foul, it's probably a fast break bucket. It was a long rebound off a jumper. I think thats the play you were referring to. The bigger issue or question was why when Derrickson got a wide open mid range look he hesitated giving Fisher a chance to recover and then Derrickson backed up and had to take a forced 3 pointer leading to the long rebound and foul by Riyan Williams. Derrickson knocks down that mid range were up 3

I'm not defending his shot selection but don't think him knocking down a mid range jumper would have been all that better in that flow.

The communication has been the defensive issue all season long. JT3 has tried it all. At one point during the season I believe as they were entering conference play, he had the players switching all screens 1-4 but that didn't work because there were several times they would have brain farts and forget to switch so JT3 scrapped that and went to fighting over or through all screens. That didn't work so now he's back to having them trying to communicate whether to switch the pick or not. Still not working! The defensive lapses are just bad basketball IQ and lack of trust in one another.

Bad teams find a way to lose. Good Coach puts you in a position to win, bad teams find away to lose. If this team with it's talent was getting blown out of every game, then I would agree that this season's struggles is 100% on JT3 but he has had this team in every game heading into the last 2 minutes despite the players in critical positions limitations being well scouted by our opponents and injuries to key players. This is a bad team with good individual pieces but as a whole they have too many holes.

Clearly it would be better to pull an Esherick and make the tournament 1 of every 5 years. Give it time, especially with our current recruiting outlook. I really think that our recent troubles are really causing an over reaction. Seriously, if Copeland played as he did tonight all season we'd have been a tournament team. Plus, we add Agau, White, and Mosely. I'm not saying the outlook is outstanding but I think it's more likely than not that we make the tournament next year.

Noooooooo!. Talent is equal if not better than most Big East team. have you seen some of the fouls and stupid play these guys have made this year. Coaches can only instruct. Players have to execute. The offense was ranked 18 this year in offensive efficiency. No totally disagree talent wise we are clearly at best second tier. perhaps ninth worse backcourt and a middle of the road front court. defensively well no comment needs to be made. we have 11 scholarship players and only one has an above average handle. Athleticsm is mediocre at best. Please you know better. you have seen it with your eyes. fouls and stupid plays are the result of an inability to execute basic skills. Talent here is not god given its developed over many years before you show up. Clearly imho we don't have the talent you think we hve. We have some really good pieces but clearly JT3 whiffed on a couple players in terms of evaluating which is the farthest thing from an exact science. Because of injuries, those miscalculation or mis-evaluated players that JT3 and the staff whiffed on are eating minutes. If we were completely healthy, those players would get spot minutes at best but because of season long injuries, those players at times this year have had to eat up heavy minutes even starting games. I don't think at the beginning of the season JT3 envisioned the amount of minutes some of the back of the bench players would end up playing.
