Looking at the best players on the top 6 teams, here's Otto's competition for Big East POY based on the weekly awards: Russ Smith: 1 Player of the Week, 5 honor rolls Brandon Triche: 1 Player of the Week, 3 honor rolls Shabazz Napier: 2 POW, 4 honor rolls And two dark horses: CJ Fair: 1 POW, 1 honor roll Jack Cooley: 0 POW, 2 honor rolls Sean Kilpatrick has 2 POW awards and 5 honor rolls, but Cincinnati already has 6 losses, so it seems highly unlikely they'll be able to finish with a double bye, let alone the top 2 finish that seems to be required to win POY. I don't think we need to worry much about Shabazz. Just can't see a guy whose team isn't at MSG winning the award. In addition to these guys, I (sadly) think MCW will be one of the other prime contenders for the award.

Also, I have a hard time seeing Russ Smith win it because of his reputation. The Cuse games, obviously, loom large. Of course, it's very possible that Triche and MCW steal votes (and the limelight, and personal items) from each other. Not to mention the focus on Southerland. Not sure there's a break out player on that team, which hurts their chances.

BE POYs don't (and have not) come from middle of the pack teams

Posted in another thread on the top defenders part of the article, but we can't be happy with this bit: An NBA general manager told SNY.tv this week that the 2013 draft class is so weak that more than a half-dozen prospects in the 2014 class would be taken ahead of whomever is selected with the No. 1 pick this summer. "As a result," the GM told the news outlet, "you're going to see a lot more guys putting their name in knowing they'll go higher in this draft, even though they may not be ready. [They know] next year's class has such incredible depth that they could actually play better and improve and drop their draft status next year." espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/8962913/first-second-year-coaches-making-big-impact-new-programs-college-basketballHope that he sticks around another year. But don't expect him to, or blame him if he doesn't.

For some reason I have the feeling that Otto's decision regarding going pro will not be based on the strength of this draft and next year's draft. He will decide whether or not the chance to play with these guys one more year, and possibly contend strongly for the championship, would be powerful enough motivation to wait a year before collecting his millions. Of course I agree with the general consensus that he will be a lottery pick, and that it will be reason enough to enter the draft. But being top 6 or 7 this year versus top 10-12 next year might not mean anything by itself.

But being top 6 or 7 this year versus top 10-12 next year might not mean anything by itself. Maybe. But unless you actually know the guy, I think you might be projecting your (well, our) hopes onto Otto. Because of the AAU story and the type of person we all think he is, you're setting up expectations that just aren't logical. Of course he's going to look at where he might be in this draft and where he might be in next year's draft. Of course he's going to look at a guy like Noel and have to consider what a similar injury might mean to him. And there's nothing wrong with that. We all hope he'll do the "noble" thing, and maybe those other factors won't be the sole determinants of what he does. But either they'll at least be a part of his decision making, or he'd be foolish.
