Man, tough crowd. Listen, I don't disagree with a lot of "impending doom" comments in the strictest sense. Nothing has changed from what I thought before last night's game -- we're going to play small; Julian will struggle against big and athletic teams; and while I think everyone holds him to a perfect standard, Chris will make a few bad decisions on the break. Fine. We overcame it, beat a good team on the road while not shooting well. That's the thing. This team isn't perfect, and it can't be a juggernaut. But it can win a lot of games by overcoming its weaknesses. Really positive things from last night: - Ya'll got your press. Why aren't your happier?
- Lubick didn't start, but you got 20 minutes out of him despite him being sick. And he boarded. I couldn't be happier, really. Dude has already earned a huge amount of PT and is only going to get better.
- Henry looked much better as well. Will need his height on D.
- Hollis ain't shooting 1-10 again.
- We battled all game. Someone in the game thread (maybe the_way) made comments about them not looking like they were trying. I do not think he actually had video. Bodies on the floor, battling for boards, mostly playing quality D
This game wasn't a test of our defensive prowess. But we held up reasonably on the boards and once we got back to about average shooting, we won. No, everything on the team ain't perfect, but it's overcomeable. My biggest wish now: Austin, YOU MUST SHOOT MORE!Thank you. I don't know why everyone was so doom and gloom. I saw a lot of positive things. We're goign to get better as the year goes on. We have a lot of potential. It was the first game of the year christ! Calm down you debbie downers. We'll be fine. We beat a very good team and we didn't play close to as well as we can. I know i should expect anything less from this group of posters.

Looks like our most effective lineup will be Wright, Freeman, Clark, Lubick, Vaughn. Hollis cant really play the 4 against bigger teams and Lubick seems very suited for the current group that we have - wont demand the ball too much on offense but will be a big body that can rebound.
Sims and Benimon will be 4s left on the bench - not ideal but it may be manageable. If Lubick/Vaughn go out or get in foul trouble then the other one can slide over to the 5.

Enjoyable game to attend. ODU crowd patisan but knowledgeable. They will win their conference and it will be a good win for us. Hope we keep playing them.
The torrent of threes balances the first half when we couldn't throw it in the ocean. The turnovers and the 0-4 from the stripe seemed obvious first-game jitters.
Could have used some of that second half grit on the back nine at Bayville. They were clutch: I wasn't.

Let's play one or two easy games before we hit ODU. I really don't like facing them right out of the gate, especially at THEIR house!

That's OK. Let's hope JT3 can find another deserving mid-major. But I'd still like to see at least ONE warm-up game before facing someone as tough as ODU on the road.

I am totally unable to watch a game on TV – no prob live. So I tape it and if we win, I watch it next day. If we lose I hit delete. I watched to ODU game on sat after work. It was on CSN+ in Montgomery County, MD. The feed was ODU’s CAA conference feed and it was fine. The 2 announcers were knowledgeable and good. Gave the Hoyas their due – the color guy was a former ODU player and kept saying the Hoyas can come back quick with a couple of 3’s. I knew the outcome but I sat there with sweat rolling off and a heart rate of 120. I AM TOTALLY NUTS! But I am HOYA NUTS. Anyone else have this disease?
I watched it again Sunday morning and my take away are these:
1) We can’t play a 1-2-3-3-5 line up. III knows that and I think Nate will start and Hollis will be 6 very soon. I wouldn’t worry about Nate’s offense. HE’S GOT A GOOD UP AND UNDER MOVE, CAN HIT 15 FT J’S and has a totally awesome 2 handed thunder dunk. He was Mr Mass and 3rd team Parade All-American I(30 players) and you don’t get there without being able to score. He looked tired to me at the end – but hey! – they say he was under the weather. He is NOT a magic saviour but he’s a real big time player. In case you didn’t notice, Nate was on the floor in front of the scorer’s table waiting to come in with 2:20 gone in the game (17:40) BEFORE Hollis had his 2nd foul. III saw he needed a 4 very early on.
Two particular plays I liked – butted his man backward on D as they shot – reached behind with 2 strong arms and pinned his man to him, giving him a clean bound –a good pass to JC who lost the handle – no matter, I liked how he plays.
Came over from the weak side to help and had a way over the rim block on the shooter.
He’s a toucher, pusher, butter, bumper and when he gives you the shouder, you move. We haven’t had that for a long time
2) Props to III for varying the D to include several zones and a little bit of a press. They weren’t great but with time and reps they will be useful. 3) It really was a great game. ODU and their coach were a worthy opponent.

I have to say, I'm glad to see our games against each other have changed your perspective quite a bit not just on ODU, but on mid-major attitude. I remember when I first posted here, before the game in 06-07, how dismissive and condescending Georgetown fans were (no offense, but it was pretty bad). We were told that we had no chance, some of the score predictions were outrageous and we were given a snowballs chance. Here we are 4 years later and 2-2 against one another and with a mutual respect for one another that is hard to find anywhere else in the country. Other BCS teams just do not schedule home and homes with good mid-majors the way you guys have, unless they are trying to showcase themselves to a local recruit or have some other selfish reason to leave their friendly confines. You guys have shown class and intestinal fortitude by giving us our due, showing mutual admiration and returning the favor for the upsets we have pulled. It would be a damn shame to end this, dare I say, rivarly, without getting a few more games in. The year you went to the Final 4, I distinctly remember JT3 crediting our upset of you at McD for being the catalyst that showed you where you were and what you need to improve and you certainly did. Just like last year, if we don't pull out that win in the Blizzard, we probably don't show the mental toughness needed to upset Notre Dame last year in the Big Dance. This year I have no doubt that this early season test will do wonders for both teams by being the barometer of where they need to be and what they need to improve on to continue the success both teams have enjoyed in recent years. As I said earlier, this rivarly has been mutually beneficial and I hope this wasn't the last we will see of the Hoyas. Congrats on the gutty win your guys pulled out and good luck the rest of the way. P.S. - Completely off-topic, but I'd like to invite all Hoyas fans who are lovers of college basketball to join my frat brother and I at our website, www.tourneybubble.com this coming Tuesday. We will be live blogging on www.Coveritlive.com for the ESPN 24 hours of hoops marathon. We are going to attempt to not only stay up all 24 hours, but drink 24 beers over that 24 hour span. In addition to the drinking and basketball watching, we will also be blogging live and hosting an online chat that I invite you all to join and participate in as Hoya fans are some of the best college bball fans in the Nation. Please join us and talk all the crap about Syracuse you want, it'll be our pleasure. Thanks again, An Odu fan.

It takes you 24 hours to drink 24 beers? Good thing your bball team is tougher than you guys are! ODU is a tough, solid squad with a heck of a coach , I expect you to be sniffing the top 25 much of the season and a decent seed for the NCAA's. Good luck the rest of the way.

parrish says something nice, sort of: "Win to brag about: Georgetown, unlike most other national powers, challenged itself in its opener, and the Hoyas passed the test (but just barely). They overcame an eight-point second-half deficit and beat Old Dominion 62-59 on Friday night to snap the Monarchs' 23-game home winning streak. Credit Chris Wright, Jason Clark and Austin Freeman as the reasons. The trio of guards combined for 54 of Georgetown's 62 points. "
