Agreed. This is the tournament for us, there's plenty of time to work with the bench in the offseason. Right now, the ONLY consideration can be winning. Put our best 5 out there and let them try to get a win on the road.

The attendance at last night's ND/UAB game was just over 2,000 people. Yikes. ND fans have definitely folded the tent on this year's team, wonder what attendance we would get if the game was at Verizon..... To be fair, it was St. Patrick's day, which is probably the only party day of the year in South Bend (excluding tailgates). I know I would not have stopped drinking for two hours to go to an NIT game against UAB. And come to think of it, they are probably on Spring Break to boot.

Regarding the bench wasn't over 75% of this board clamoring about how we had to develop a big bench in December and January? Why, when the last 4 years under III we have played no more than a 7 man rotation and 6 man rotation in our most successful years, I have no idea why everyone decided that. In the end the fact that we played to many people and subbed to much was one of weaknesses, which is the way it usually ends up with a long rotation. UNC 2007 is a perfect example of that, lots of talent but one of the reasons they never really had great chemistry was the 10 man rotation. I would much prefer to have 7 than 9.

Cheer up. If we win, wonderful. If we don't, we're out of our misery for this year and can start thinking about next year. GO HOYAS!!! Beat the Bears!

People did clamor for that. I didn't clamor personally, but I was worried about a 6 man rotation with 4 underclassmen getting worn out in the Big East. But the fact is, it doesn't matter because it didn't work. The next game we lose, the season ends. So let's try to put off losing as long as possible. And if you're going down, go down with your best 5, not a Nikita bomb off the side of the backboard.

The problem is not too much bench or not enough bench. The problem is that we don't have players who established themselves in specific roles. In the past, JTIII's genius was in developing a defensive lineup that we could count on for stops, an offensive lineup we could count on to consistently get high percentage shots in key possessions, a big lineup that could score and defend in the paint and rebound, and a small lineup that could beat the press and pressure the perimeter. Then he could dictate the matchups throughout the game. This team more or less lives or dies on shooting jumpers better than the opponents or getting to the foul line more than the opponents. We don't have Plan B or C or D because we don't have Plan B, C, or D players.

7 1/2 is enough for our rotation.
Knowing that, if I told you at the beginning of the year our top 8 minute-getters would be Wright, Monroe, Freeman, Summers, Sapp, Clark, Mescheriakov, and Wattad, what would you have said? I would have said "Oh no, were Vaughn and Sims in a plane crash?"
One point, two combos, one power forward, and FOUR swing men in the top 8. If you wonder where are specialized roles went, there you go.

For all those complaining about substitution patterns... I used to keep track of minutes played for the official scoring crew during the early 80s for the JTII teams. I can assure you it's a familial thing.
