Reading Entertainment Weekly (or something) the other day, I think the writers said a lot of those questions will be answered in the first 8 episodes. Also, I think I read that three years elapsed between leaving the island and Locke's funeral. That was a lot longer than I was thinking, and makes you wonder how far into the future a lot of those flash forwards occurred.
I'm interested in learning the backstories on the freighter people, which is supposed to happen early on as well.
Here's to a full season in beautiful HD!!!

4. Part of the key lies with Ben and his time travel. When Ben activates the wheel it is roughly Christmas 2004. We know this from Desmond's phone call to Penny on Christmas Eve 2004. However, there is a strange time delay between the Island and the ship, so it's possible the date is slightly different on the Island. However, I believe it is late 2004/early 2005. We also know that Ben travels from activating the wheel to the desert of Tunisia. We know this because of the collapsable baton, parka, tear and injury to his arm. We know the date then is October 24, 2005 due to his interaction with the woman at the front desk of the hotel in Tunisia. Furthermore, at the hotel he sees Sayid on the tv discussing his wife's recent death. This means about 10 months have transpired between the rescue and the death of Sayid's wife. Ben speaks with Sayid at the funeral, which must have occured only days later. Ben claims he travelled via Syria to get to Iraq.
Sometime in this 10 month window a few things happen:
1) Jack's father's funeral - we know this because Sayid and his wife are present. 2) Sun gives birth - we know because Hurley comes out to see her. 3) Kate is put on trial - we know because Jack is sane and testifies. 4) Hurley's surprise party - we know this because Sayid and his wife are present. 5) Hurley starts to go crazy - we know this because of the car Hurley's father gives him at the party.
Things that may be before or after this 10 month window: 1) Charlie/Echo/Lt. Daniels visits Hurley - tells Jack and Sayid about it in the hospital. 2) Jack going crazy - Jack visits Hurley in the hospital and appears sane.
Defintely after 10 month window: 1) Hurley escapes from sanitarium with Sayid.
A Couple Other Thoughts: 1) Locke's dad related to the island in some way? His heritage seems very important, is it his biological heritage (meaning his "father" was not really his father) or spritual heritage (a la dalai lama)? 2) Was Jack/Claire's father an Other? How else do you explain his link to Jacob and the Island?

My thoughts:
1. I have no idea.
2. Locke left to bring the others (no pun intended) back, but he is not really dead. He will come back to life on the island, which is his "home" now.
3. Ben always has a plan.
4. It has to be more than 10 months since they left the island, given the size of Aaron when Kate and Jack got into their argument. That kid was at least two years old, if not more.
5. Yes.
6. Jacob is John's real father. OK, I have no idea, but that sounded cool. I was also going to go with "Jacob is a manatee."
7. Almost certainly, as I am sure Richard and Locke will travel there.
8. No.
9. Yes.
10. It means nothing. Psych.
Looking forward to this (and Battlestar Galactica finale, of course).

It is more than 10 months, I was just setting up a known span of time. We know its 10 months from the time Sayid leaves the island to the time his wife is murdered.

Since the loss to Duke this is pretty much all I've cared about. I had a long post before throwing out some ideas in response to the mysteries Buff brought up, but my comp spazzed and lost it. No matter, they almost all would have been proved wrong by tomorrow night anyway. I still have my theories but based on past experience I'm sure I'm way off, so no loss.
And yes, the foot from that statue is still one of the biggest WTF moments in 4 seasons of that show and the one thing that i want them to address most.
To add to Buff's list, there's a lot of old things I'm curious about like how the hell Calvin was in Iraq with Sayid and then in the hatch, how Libby was in the clinic with Hurley, wtf is the deal with the numbers (remember when everybody thought they were the key to everything?), how the hell the black rock is so far inland, the Adam & Eve skeletons... I'm sure there are a lot more, and most of them probably won't be answered any time soon if ever, as they will concentrate on developing more recent things like how and to where the island moved, how Locke got off of it (im still thinking hes gonna turn the frozen wheel like ben did) and how the O6 are going to get back to it, all that. But I hope they give us some more perspective on the nature and history of the island--particularly the older history of the island, what it was like a loooong time ago and how Dharma and the Black Rock and the Others came to it, and all that.
I read somewhere that the first 2 episodes are very good (arent they all?)... I'm hoping they hit us with some bomb shells.
To jgalt and anyone else, don't forget there's a bonus hour of recap off the top... If you're forgetting things, and who isn't with all the crazy storylines and details, be sure to check that out and refresh your memory on pertinent stuff before the new ones.

how Libby was in the clinic with Hurley, Awww, I miss Libby. She was cool. I'd like an answer to that particular question too, but I wouldn't expect one. Why the hell does annoying-as-all-@$%# Ana Lucia get to come back for an episode or two (I believe that has been leaked), but not Libby?? If I have to watch Michelle Rodriguez try to act again, I'm gonna' lose it. I get it. You're tough. Try another emotion, wouldya'? From everything I've heard, the writers have said they're planning on answering quite a few lingering questions in the first couple of episodes. Of course, that probably means they're just @#$%-ing with us again. EDIT: Discussion this afternoon at 3 p.m. on washingtonpost.com. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2009/01/16/DI2009011602333.htmlI am glad that the election and Inauguration are over so that the WP can get back to things that matter. ;D Actually, I think these ladies do a pretty good job on their Lost blog. It is definitely something I read the morning after each show.

Boz, I also look forward to the WP blog the next morning. Sometimes I have to tape the Lost episode, so I cut and past the blog and read it later after I have watched the episode. It is good with literary and philosophical references that I have missed.

I just remembered something else regarding the timeline.
In Kate's flashforward we see Jack in the kitchen making coffee before going up to get in the shower with Kate. The headline in the sports section says: Yanks Bludgeon Sox in Series Sweep. The only time that happened in the relevant timeline would be on August 31, 2007.
Therefore, we know that as of August 31, 2007 Jack and Kate are still together.
11/01/2004 - Aaron born (thereabouts if I recall) 12/24/2004 - Desmond phones Penny 12/26/2004 - Ben turns wheel, moves the Island, disappears (based on time from phone call)
12/26/2004 - Tsunami in real life -- no mention in show
01/07/2005 - O6 leave Searcher and are cast adrift in raft to wash up on inhabited island (based on intro at press conference)
April or May - Sun confronts father, takes control of company
June or July - Hurley's party
June or July - Jack's father's funeral
June or July - Sun gives birth and Hurley visits
? - Hurley goes nuts ? - Jack visits Hurley
10/20/2005 - Sayid's wife shot in LA 10/24/2005 - Ben arrives in Tunisia and sees Sayid on TV speaking about wife's death 10/25/2005 - Ben speaks to Sayid in Takrit 10/26/2005 - Sayid makes first kill for Ben
2006 - Kate put on trial
08/27/2007 - Jack and Kate still together, Aaron roughly 2 years and 2 months old.
September 2007 - Jack visits Hurley for second time hears about Charlie, proposes to Kate
? - Jack sees father, gets jealous, goes nuts ? - Locke leaves island and visits Jack, Kate, and Walt ? - Walt visits Hurley ? - Claire visits Kate in dream ? - Locke dies ? - Jack reads about death on flight to LA from Sidney, then drives to bridge attempts suicide, saves mother and child ? - Two days later asks Kate to meet him ? - Sayid busts Hurley out

Has to be Red Sox - Jack is a big Red Sox fan; he wouldn't react if the Yanks beat the White Sox.

Has to be Red Sox - Jack is a big Red Sox fan; he wouldn't react if the Yanks beat the White Sox. The only three sweeps of Chicago or Boston I see in 05-06 are: a three game sweep of the white sox on July 14-15, 2006, with scores of 6-5, 14-3, and 6-4 then there’s the series you refer to, which the Yanks won 5-3, 4-3 and 5-0 and then the Yanks won a five game series August 18-21, 2006 at Fenway by scores of 12-4, 14-11, 13-5, 8-5 and 2-1. Could be 2006 I guess. ON EDIT: of course this topic has already been discussed. How could I be so naive, this is Lost after all. www.boston.com/ae/tv/blog/2008/05/i_love_how_the.html

I think I can go to sleep now. lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Ms._HawkingI liked the second episode a bit better than the first but the opening seen was predictably unpredictable. Interesting to see what the hell happened there, Im thinking Faraday wasnt really there but has somehow moved through time and infiltrated in order to do... something. I also think as Buff mentioned that Miss Hawking might be Farradays mom... AND... maybe Charlotte's mom too, since Charlotte was born on the island? Maybe they are siblings and don't know it? Not sure. Pretty eager to see what the deal is with those noobs who were trying to cut off Juliet's hands. Were their people shooting fire arrows too? Stuff pertaining to what the island was like prior to the crash and the stuff we already know is most interesting to me. I'll maybe have more thoughts tomorrow.
