HAHAHAHAHA, your freshman year when nobody else cared! Try my freshman year 2 seasons before that when the student section was only on one side of the court and equal in size or sometimes outnumbered by the band! Oh, I wasn't looking for sympathy or anything. It's just the best I have for comparison. I remember riding the buses back after the Duke game (remember the buses?!) and there were seniors in tears: "We've been waiting four years for this." I'm not belittling what they/you went through, merely offering what I can. Edit: I'd also just like to say while I can. I know it says I joined in March 2008 and that I've barely posted, but I've been reading HoyaTalk a LOT longer than that, I've just only recently started posting

not sure exactly how much exams will affect student turnout, but it seems like a lot of people are indeed planning on going. still, how about making sure the NON-students are there in force, not just in numbers, but in volume too. let's ALL get loud and stay loud for this one...

As a proud member of the student section - let me agree wholeheartedly. I am a senior now. My freshman year, I went to every home game, even when nobody else cared. I got to the home opener 15 minutes before tip off and got a front row seat (we beat Fairfield, IIRC). Anyway, even that year, unheralded as we were early on, the Duke game was packed and loud. And we brought the house down. My point is, even when the team is not hyped, the students show up big for big games. This is a big game. We will defend our home win streak. Fear not...it's going to be a hostile environment. HAHAHAHAHA, your freshman year when nobody else cared! Try my freshman year 2 seasons before that when the student section was only on one side of the court and equal in size or sometimes outnumbered by the band! Seriously, I read that post and laughed too. That year, we'd have student turnouts that were roughly 1/3rd to 1/4th of the number of students that came out for Savannah St. this year... on a regular basis. But, at least you got to see some NCAA tourney appearances as a student, 007. No one had it as bad as the class of '05 since maybe the alums that graduated in the early 70's.

Addict is right on. Key to our winning is Greg staying out of foul trouble. And REBOUNDING THE BASKETBALL.

You know when I used to go to the games, I used to have to walk in barefeet through a blizzard after feeding the chickens and milking the cows. You young 'uns don't know how lucky you've had it.

Yeah all the non students try and ridicule the people in your section until they're as loud as all of you are. Students can't do it all on their own.

Hi guys. Like last year I come in peace. ;D
Anyway I just wanted to wish you guys good luck tomorrow. I'm hoping we both play our best. I haven't had a game to look forward to since our loss to Xavier.
I sure hope we shoot better than we did in that game or it's going to be a long day for us. I'm proud though that our teams get to be the first game on CBS this year.
Can't wait for the tip-off.

welcome back chitown. always a pleasure to have knowledgeable, classy visitors to hoyatalk. this should be a great game. i'm interested in seeing how the teams' systems play against each other this year with mostly different lineups than last year. also very excited to be yelling at a live game instead of a TV this year! good luck to your tigers (but not tomorrow of course!).

It seems like everyone has been working ahead so they can make it to this game. Anyone who doesn't physically have an exam during the game will be there it seems. I expect a good turnout. Definitely. and if students cant be there they are giving their student tickets to other students who can go. I know a number of students are heading out early tomorrow morning to get good seats and i dont expect there to be many seats not filled.

Standard with most teams we play they wonder what is a hoya? Funny to see on their board they think it is this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoya . Pretty funny.

Thanks I watched you against UT. I thought you had em'. I also think you look farther ahead than us at this point in the season. You still have that back door going real well. I'm guessing you'll catch us napping at least a couple times tomorrow. Monroe looks good. Defense too. Our team in a nutshell: We have a lot of talented inexperienced wings. We're a little bit light up front depth-wise, and we really have no point guard at this juncture in the season. We'll have to win with our D. We do have length. Win or lose it should be a good test for us to play a top tier team like you guys on the road.

These two teams are interesting because both lost three important players from last years teams. In febuary/march this game may be very different (though i still have to think gtown would win). Gtown has an edge in that our players have more defined positions. I think that memphis' lack of a true experience PG is going to be the difference in this gam.

My high school bio teacher had a 7' hoya in the classroom. He made a point of it every time he saw me. Unfortunately he refused to name it Reuben despite my best efforts

Vegas just opened us up as 4.5 point favorites. Line has already moved to Georgetown -5.

This is a little bit random, but I plan on carrying out my usual tradition of non-sensible heckling towards the warming-up opposition. The pre-game sheets that Hoya Blue has been handing out have been a bit disappointing in terms of embarrassing information about the other team's players (think: JJ Redick's book of poetry). What can I work with before this game?

Since I won't be able to see the game or participate in the Hoya chat, I want everybody on this board to root extra hard for me. I expect one in the win column, when I get to Folsom.

Real conversation.
Father: "I'm flying in tomorrow morning, do you want to meet at Clyde's for brunch"
Son: "Are you kidding, there are 20 of us going over to Verizon at 10 a.m. to get good seats in the student section"
I have never been prouder.

I tend to think the actual number of students that show up is probably a little overrated as a barometer. I'd much rather have a smaller number of students who are excited for the game than a huge group with a lot of people who are just there and not especially into it. It happens all the time, there are lots of people in the back of the section who stand and watch but are too cool to make noise. Not that there is any problem with those people being there or anything, but mostly we are worried about a high volume level.... all those people who are skipping this game because they have an exam on Tuesday and Thursday, and that are convincing themselves that these few hours will be the difference maker... I tend to think they wouldn't be the ones going crazy and screaming their heads off anyway. So it's not a huge loss.
Anybody who is REALLY a big fan would have prioritized the game and put in overtime on studying during this past week so that they could make it to the game (exception of course for those who actually have an exam DURING the game). So overall, I tend to think that this crowd will be a good one. Since it figures to be a tight game, I think that also bodes well for student involvement. Finally, I'm guessing that Memphis will have a decent amount of fans at the game, but not TOO many. Sometimes I think having opposing fans in the building is a good thing, because it fires up our fans to be louder and drown them out. It's not good when they have TOO MANY fans (Syracuse, WVU) but if they have enough to be heard I actually think that's good and will push our crowd to be louder.
Overall, should be a great game to watch.

1984's "expert" (pretending to be billy packer) 3 keys to the game for the HOYAS:
1. Memphis' ability to read and adjust (with their inexperienced players) to the HOYAS disguising and switching defenses;
2. Can the HOYAS "AT LEAST" neutralize the boards on both ends?
3. Can Gregory the GREAT put up "AT LEAST" his averages, and will the REAL D. SUMMERS Play today with the same passion and savvy as he has for the last few games?
(I'll check for the expected pink slip in the mail) HOYA SAXA!!!
