Too funny, Frostback. This is my first time on this thread, not because I have anything against the Nationals (I would be very happy to see them make the playoffs, even though I doubt that they will), but because I wanted to see if anybody wrote anything about Patterson's fantastic performance last night (albeit against a minor league team). So what do I find? Hockey posts!!

I know there is another thread about Rafael Palmeiro's steroid suspension, but I MUST reference it under this thread. Early in the baseball season, I gave a list of 3 things that needed to happen for the Nationals to really STICK IT to the Orioles. One of them was Sammy Sosa getting a steroid suspension. That hasn't happened, but R.Palmeiro getting a steroid suspension is WAY better. This is because he was just celebrated for joining the 3,000 hit club, now he has shamed himself and more importantly the Orioles organization. The fact that this happened while the Orioles are in a COMPLETE TAILSPIN(1-12 in their last 13 games) makes this perfect. This scenario is exactly what that PIECE OF GARBAGE Peter Angelos deserves. Those of you who used to root for the Orioles shouldn't feel sorry for them. The reason is, the Orioles organization is the reason a LOT of Nationals fans can't watch them play tonight. That's right, just think about how most fans will only get to watch them on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I guess were lucky this week, their Thursday night game will be televised on UPN20. Even games on ESPN and TBS are blacked out in D.C. Fans shouldn't have to switch to a particular cable system(RCN) or get Direct TV in order to watch the HOME TEAM! The only thing that can make this better is if the Nationals start playing winning ball on this homestand. It would be great if the Nationals could turn things around at the same time that the Orioles organization sinks to one of their lowest points. Thomas, You win this time, buddy. The Orioles went from the TOP to the bottom (not just in standings) in less than two months. All our hopes and dreams of playoffs got lost in a mess of injuries, steroids, and inapt management. At least it's almost football season so I can pull for the 'Skins to win another Superbowl title . . . Sincerely, Mark Rypien

hoyarooter, I was at the game last night and wasn't really surprised how John Patterson DOMINATED the Dodgers last night. J.Patterson has been the Nationals best pitcher for a while now. He's just been getting a lot of no-decisions. I'm glad the game was televised so EVERYONE could see it. Interesting note on John Patterson, he was selected number 5 overall in the 1996 draft. Like I wrote before, the Nationals starting pitching has remained strong during the month of July, so it shouldn't be very hard for them to turn things around. Tony Armas Jr. has been pitching very well in his last few starts. The only pitcher that concerns me is Ryan Drese.

The Nationals FINALLY won a 1-run game last night against the Astros. John Patterson had a reversal of fortune last night because he didn't pitch well, got run support, and the win. Most times he has pitched, the complete opposite has happened to him. The Nationals are fortunate that they will not have to face Roy Oswalt and Roger Clemens in this series. Andy Pettite will be pitching against them tomorrow night. At least, that game will be televised.

I went to see that Nationals play the Dodgers last week when I was in DC. I highly recommend that $15 seats in the 500 section behind home plate. They are pretty much right on top of the plate and the best value for the money as compared to seats that I had in other games in New York and Toronto. Also, for those of you that are interested their are MASN = Mr. Angelos Screws the Nationals t-shirts being sold in all sizes near the Stadium/Armory Metro stop on game days for $10. Also for those of you who are undergrads the Nationals hold regular college nights where you can get cheap tickets to the games. Definitely a very fun time - the audio problem that some people mentioned in connection with not being able to hear the PA anouncer in the upper deck sections seems to have been fixed.

StPetersburgHoya, I think they fixed the P.A.System in late May. You should consider yourself fortunate that you didn't have to attend a game in which you couldn't hear the P.A. guy at all. Fans who were sitting in seats where you couldn't see the scoreboard were REALLY in bad shape.
While watching yesterday's Nationals game against the Rockies, the announcers mentioned some VERY interesting information about recent call-up Brandon Watson. HOYA FANS you will like this, B.Watson was drafted out of Westchester High School(same school as Brandon Bowman and Ashanti Cook). Since B.Watson was just called up from New Orleans, I'm going to assume he graduated Westchester 3 or 4 years ago meaning he attended school with B.Bowman and A.Cook. Westchester High was a very STAR-STUDDED high school a few years back. It seems as if their ENTIRE 2001-2002 basketball team has played at a high level of D-1. They probably have some football players playing at high D-1 schools as well.
Any Georgetown students, alumni, or facultly members who know B.Bowman or A.Cook should see if those guys can get B.Watson to get you good seats for Nationals games. HA! HA!

HUGE WIN for the Nationals last night in Philadelphia. Luckily, that game was televised so most of us in the D.C.area were able to watch. It was the way they won the game that made it a huge win. They lost yet another 1-run game in the first game of the double-header and were trailing 4-0 after the first couple of innings in the second game. They came back and won the game 5-4, behind some clutch hitting by Jose Guillen, Carlos Baerga, and Preston Wilson.
How good was it to see "THE CHIEF" Chad Cordero end the game with a strikeout? He actually came in with one out in the 8th and got the Phillies batter to hit into an inning ending double-play. If the Nationals make the playoffs, I feel last night's win at Philadelphia will be viewed as one of the most important wins of the season. Former National pitcher Tomo Ohka(I'd take him over Ryan Drese at this point) helped out the Nationals by defeating Roger Clemens and the Astros last night.

Ryan Drese will be good. A lot of my friends in OK are Texas Rangers fans - they were very angry about him going on waivers - he has pritched very well in the past and with some mechanics adjustments could probably do it again (they definitely considered him a better pitcher than Chan Ho Park and probably their third best pitcher behind Chris Young and Rogers).

When the Nationals played the Rangers earlier this season, the announcers mentioned how many of the Rangers were upset that the organization just let go of Ryan Drese like that. I don't understand how the Rangers could just release their opening day starter like that. StPetersburgHoya, you need to ask some of your friends what the deal was with that. Did he have an attitude problem? A bad attitude is why the Nationals released Tomo Ohka. To be honest, I think T.Ohka had a right to be mad, Frank Robinson's manner of taking out pitchers is a bit unusual. R.Drese pitched good in his last start and he was outstanding in his first couple of starts with the Nationals.
I see that the Nationals have asked 2005 draft pick Ryan Zimmerman to switch from thirdbase to shortstop. I believe they are considering calling him up to the majors very soon(maybe next week against the Reds). I didn't think he would join the Nationals this quickly. CHRISTIAN GUZMAN SUCKING is probably the main reason R.Zimmerman is being asked to switch positions. Rushing touted, highly-paid, prospects to the majors is not always a good thing, if he gets to the majors and plays poorly, it could negatively affect the rest of his career. I hope the Nationals organization bringing him up to the majors after a couple months in the minors and ordering him to switch positions is a well thought out plan and not just a quick fix. I thought the original plan was for Ryan Zimmerman to replace Vinny Castilla in 2006 or 2007.

According to talk radio in Dallas when I was there last and my friends - the GM of the Rangers is a moron (he's actually called "the empty golf shirt" on an ESPN radio show in Dallas).

I can't believe the Nationals are about to get SHUT OUT AGAIN by Cardinals "B TEAM" pitchers. The loss today against the Pujols-less Cardinals is VERY disturbing. I was at the game yesterday(8/27) and had a hard time figuring out if I was at RFK Stadium or Busch Stadium. The BANDWAGON Cardinals fans came out in FULL FORCE this weekend RFK. The Nationals next 17 games will be against N.L.East opponents, this stretch will make or break them. I heard that the Nationals have a player named Rick Short at Triple A New Orleans who has been hitting around .400 for the entire season. WHY THE HELL ISN'T HE WITH THE NATIONALS? The Nationals weakness has been hitting for the ENTIRE season, even when they were winning. The free program you can get before all the Nationals games showed a website which protests the way that PIECE OF GARBAGE Peter Angelos and Comcast are SCREWING the Nationals fans. Speaking of Comcast, they actually have the nerve to put their banner up at RFK Stadium. A fan sitting near me pointed that out and I got angry when I saw it. I never noticed it before(because I'm usually sitting on the opposite side of the stadium). The website protesting the Nationals TV situation is www.iwantmynatstv.com

JOSE F@#KING GUILLEN!!!! The guys who run this site MUST not delete the expletive I used in Jose Guillen's name because of what he did last night. Braves pitcher Jorge Sosa threw at J.Guillen's head in retlaliation for a hard slide into Chipper Jones last time the teams played each other. Two pitches later JOSE GUILLEN CRUSHES A HOME RUN OVER THE LEFT FIELD WALL AT TURNER FIELD. Mel Proctor's call of it made it even better. I wish J.Guillen would have LAUGHED IN CHIPPER JONES FACE AS HE CROSSED THIRD BASE! J.Guillen also hit a home run in a hostile situation in a Nationals win at Anaheim earlier this year.
I HAVE to comment on the Orioles. Their collapse during the second half of the season is astounding. They are now 9 games under .500. On June 19th, the Orioles were 41-27. I'd like to see them drop 14 games under .500, so they can complete the cycle. Ripping the Orioles isn't really necessary at this point since the ORIOLE FAN who posted messages under the NATIONALS THREAD gave up on them weeks ago, but I had to notify everyone on how AWFUL they have really been of late.

After years of horrible teams, some may be slow to believe the hype is real this time. Is it real? Honestly? Come on...seriously? Oh good times. He was so confident back then. Silly O's fan.

I heard yesterday that the crowd at yesterday's(Friday-9/2) Nationals game was slightly over 28,000........WHERE WAS EVERYONE?? I couldn't believe that, this series against Philadelphia is one of the most important ones of the season. I thought more people would show up than that. Maybe more people will show up for tonight's game as Nationals ACE John Patterson gets the start. Good to see Ryan Zimmerman up with the Nationals. Like I wrote before, I hope bringing him up this quickly(he was only in the minors for a couple months) was a planned out decision and not just a knee-jerk reaction to Vinny Castilla being hobbled and Christian Guzman SUCKING!!
I find myself becoming more and more angry with Comcast Sportsnet. Not only do they have the nerve to put a banner up at RFK, but they also sponsor the Nationals pregame show on the radio. I couldn't believe the announcer said Comcast Sportsnet is sponsoring the show. Those SCUMBAGS at Comcast Sportsnet play a big role(along with that PIECE OF GARBAGE Pete Angelos) in the majority of Nationals fans in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area only being able to watch a LIMITED number of Nationals games, yet they associate themselves with the team as if they are supporting the Nationals. Comcast Sportsnet's commercials about being the Nationals station is just as DISGUSTING!!

I've attended 3 of the Nationals last 4 games and the attendance is getting WORSE!! Last night, they had a little less than 25,000. Geez, it appears as if the Nationals may be like the Wizards meaning "fans" only come to games when a marquee team or player comes to town. Barry Bonds(I won't even mention his team) may be coming to town to play the Nationals in about 2 weeks. Those of you who want to see him may want to get your tickets now. I recall tickets for the series against the Cardinals were almost sold out on gamedays. There is a second trailor which is to the right of the main trailor where gameday tickets are sold that sells tickets for games in advance.
I started seeing the media trucks parked near the stadium waiting for the evacuees to arrive at the D.C.Armory on Saturday. Anyone walking from the metro station to the stadium can't help but see everything. I saw Gilbert Arenas outside of the D.C.Armory after Sunday's game, I've come to find out he is a MAJOR contributor to the relief effort for the evacuees now at the D.C.Armory. Hurricane Katrina should hit VERY close to home for some of the Nationals players who were recently called up from Triple A New Orleans.
What's up with Frank Robinson shutting off the music in the locker room? He must think he is managing high schoolers or something. He's done an outstanding job keeping the Nationals in playoff contention for this long, but I've got to question his managerial style. Not just this incident, but calling up AVERAGE pitchers from the minor leagues to start important games, his use of the bullpen, the starting lineups that he sometimes uses, and practically giving away quality pitchers.

Frank Robinson is a true baseball icon, a legend and a groundbreaker - he has been so for years and years.
Having said that, I now say this with all due respect:
The man is quite possibly more than just a wee bit off his nut. It would not surprise me to learn that he keeps bins of strawberries in his office and a couple of steel ball bearings in his pocket.
As for the DC fans, it does not surprise me as a fairly long-time resident of this city. DC has a collective case of adult ADD. I don't think the city supports its teams very well over a long period, except the Skins. This is nothing against the Nationals as a team, I wish them well. Yes, I grew up an Orioles fan and I suppose still root for them to do well, but I don't watch baseball anymore. (I won't go into an anti-baseball rant, I just don't like it; cheers to those who do). It would be nice for the Nationals players if they can make it into October, but I'm not surprised DC's attention is wandering a bit.
(and FYI, in case I haven't mentioned this before, most Orioles fans I know hate Peter Angelos a lot worse than Nationals fans do; just for very different reasons)

Boz, I think you have brought up a great question, whether Nationals fans or Orioles fans hate that PIECE OF GARBAGE Peter Angelos more. I'm sure the Orioles fans are upset that P.Angelos has turned the team into a LOSING FRANCHISE. You're right about Frank Robinson being "a bit off his nut." Last night, he pulled John Halama after 24 pitches. Sure, J.Halama was in a bit of trouble when pulled, but he's a veteran. I'm sure he can handle a situation like that. It gets worse, he replaced Travis Hughes almost as quickly after that. He had used 3 pitchers by the time the pitcher ever came up to bat. You remember last year when F.Robinson was managing the Expos and ESPN showed him SLEEPING DURING A GAME!!! I'll rip F.Robinson some more on a future post. I MUST get on him some more.
Gold Hoya, I was at last night's EXECUTION OF THE NATIONALS and the attendance improved. It went from slightly less than 25,000 to slightly more than 25,000. Now that's progress. HA! HA! It was funny because when they announced the attendance during the top of the ninth inning, there was about 500 people still left at RFK. I got a free ticket to last night's game because there was a female standing by one of the hot dog stands in front of the D.C.Armory giving them out. Those tickets were for the WORST seats at RFK(Section 550), but I wasn't that concerned because I knew fans wouldn't be showing up and I just moved to Section 523 during the first inning.
I'm thinking the female who gave me a free ticket may have been associated with the group giving away tickets to the evacuees staying at the D.C.Armory. I saw some of them in the stadium and on the steps of the D.C.Armory. One of the evacuees, threw out the first pitch of the game. The evacuees all had I.D.badges on. For those of you interested, there will be members of the Wizards, Nationals, Redskins, and D.C.United accepting goods for the Hurricane Katrina victims tomorrow(Friday-9/9) at RFK Stadium from 7AM-3PM.
