I was at the Nationals game last night against Florida and the way the P.A.system works is that the ONLY the people in the lower sections can hear it. Those of us who regularly sit in the upper decks must pay close attention to the scoreboard to follow what is going on. Interesting note, I got to the game while both teams were warming up and the P.A.system could clearly be heard in the upper decks until the game started.
Also, I've got to comment on Nick Johnson's choosing to play 'Hate It or Love It' by The Game every time he comes up to bat and Ryan Church playing 'Let's Go' by Trick Daddy when he comes up to bat. Who knew they were hip hop fans. So the next time any of you are at the game and want to know that NICE beat that is playing when Nick Johnson and Ryan Church come up to bat, now you know!

DC is in first place - when are the Nats going to realize that they are playing against a bunch of teams in their own division that have bigger budgets, legitimate superstars, their own baseball only stadiums, and real owners? This is unreal.

The Nationals have mastered the art of looking ineffective against the opposing team's starting pitcher for about 6 innings, then they either breakthrough on the frustrated starter or some guy from the bullpen. I've attended games and seen the Nationals do this against Barry Zito, Josh Beckett, A.J.Burnett, and Chris Capuano-he's a good young pitcher for Milwaukee. It's as if they are following a script.

An article in today's Washington Post mentions that the Baltimore Orioles have asked the FCC to order Comcast cable company to begin televising Nationals games immediately. Let's hope that this happens. I've had enough of seeing Nationals games televised ONLY on weekends. That PIECE OF GARBAGE Peter Angelos should realize that he doesn't live in New York or Boston and he can't build a regional network that has baseball as its main source of programming. What in the BLUE HELL does he plan to televise on MASN during baseball's off-season? It's like I have written before, when it was announced that the Expos would become the Nationals. Peter Angelos should have just allowed them to exist in D.C. without causing problems. Despite what he claims about the Nationals taking away fans from Baltimore, it's in baseball's best FINANCIAL interest that the team no longer existed in Montreal.
ISN'T IT TIME FOR THE ORIOLES TO REMOVE THEIR STORE FROM K STREET IN DOWNTOWN D.C. I thought for sure that would have been taken down and replaced by a NATIONALS STORE.

Great quotes from Frank after the...ahem..."incident" Tuesday night:
About Mike Scioscia: "Let me tell you this," Robinson said Wednesday afternoon. "If people let me intimidate them, then I'll intimidate them. But I wasn't going to let him intimidate me. I am the intimidator." About Guillen having to be restrained: Robinson was asked whether Guillen would have been within his rights to punch a member of the Angels. "If he feels like he has a good reason to, yes," Robinson said.

I loved Boswell's column about the incident. And I loved how Frank and Guillen reacted. One of the reasons that the Twins faded in 2001 after being up 9 games at the all star break was that they let the Indians intimidate them. That is NOT going to happen w/ Frank and Gullen around on the Nats.
That and did you see Cordero's ninth last night? It was absolutlely ridiculous (both amazing and heart stopping at the same time).

TBird41, a lot of people in the Washington D.C. area COULD NOT SEE THE GAME!!! It's bad enough that PIECE OF GARBAGE Peter Angelos blocks us from watching a lot of Nationals games, but ESPN 2 showed the Mets-A's game. I guess MLB officials aren't aware(DESPITE BEING TOLD ABOUT IT) that a lot of Nationals games are not televised locally. The Nationals just got through playing an INTENSE series with Anaheim and a lot of the fans in the D.C.area saw NONE OF THE GAMES! The fans in D.C. are able to watch ALL the Orioles games, though. The guys who run this site should allow me to CURSE about this situation. The Washington Post actually printed that last night's Nationals game would be on ESPN 2.

I saw it too - I think its a good point if made in a way that is a little over the top - if i may draw a comparison to a Skins rival - the Dallas media absolutely drools over the cowboys and what happened at mini-camp, what parcells had for lunch today, the 3rd tight end's personal life-story and what we think about it, and hours of analysis of any sound bite from any player - however they now have a scrappy (very good hitting) baseball team that puts a young group of fearless guys on the field every game and wins - unlike its former juggernaught football compatriat that is run by a capricious owner and a coach that might be too old to go to the promised land again in this league. I think that it is all right to not follow every detail of the Skins - it doesn't make you not a fan - it just means that you realize that maybe 13 hours of 980AM's coverage of the team in late July might not be healthy for you.

Heresy. I'll acknowledge my biases but DFW you yourself wisely wrote in another post that DC sports fans are basically 1) Skins fans first and 2) Everything else last. This MIGHT change if the Nats were to win the next 5 consecutive World Series. But I suspect Atlanta and Florida will get it in gear after the All-Star-game and the Nats will do their best Texas Rangers imitation and perform a slow but steady fade from August on.... As for the Orioles, injuries are their test. If they can continue to barely hold things together until Javy and pitchers return, they'll be OK. If not, the wild card will be a stretch. One other point, there are no fair weather Baltimore football fans. There are Colts fans (a huge portion of which adopted the Ravens, rightly or wrongly--see Johnny Unitas, upon relocation), Ravens fans (some of whom have no memory of the Colts) and Redskins fans and ne'er the twain shall meet!! I'm one of the few, if only, Colts fans who never bothered to call the Washington football team "Deadskins"--out of pure cynicism and opportunism when I relocated to the DC area!! Plus I had very mixed feelings about the Ravens nee Browns since their relocation was nearly as ugly as that of the Colts....

Yesterday(Friday-7/1), there was some NATIONALS BASHING on WASHINGTON D.C.'s Sportstalk station. An Oriole fan who works on the station ran his mouth about how the crowds aren't that good, the fans aren't knowledgable, and some other nonsense. I'm not surprised about that considering the station BROADCAST ALL OF THE ORIOLES GAMES, while the Nationals are broadcast on a station that is almost impossible to pick up.
I know some of you who are posting under this thread aren't in the D.C. area, but you wouldn't believe how much those who are here are getting SCREWED by that PIECE OF GARBAGE Peter Angelos, Comcast Cable, and Major League Baseball. ComcastSportnet devotes WAY more coverage to the Orioles than the Nationals. They run some All-Access Orioles show and also have the Orioles announcers do a post game report of all the Orioles games on their highlights show that they run every day. The Nationals get NONE OF THAT! For those of you in the D.C.area, there will be EVEN LESS Nationals games televised from this point on. But we can catch the FREAKING Orioles every night on ComcastSportsnet.
The things the Nationals fans can be happy about is that the Orioles should set a record low for attendance, the Orioles currently SUCK(they can't win at home or on the road), and Sammy Sosa's career appears to be over, he'll be batting 8th or 9th very soon. How funny will it be when the Yankees and/or the Bluejays move ahead of the Orioles. Meanwhile, the Nationals keep losing key players to injuries(Nick Johnson, Ryan Church) and continue winning. Baseball's best closer Chad Cordero was given the day off in a save situation yesterday against the Cubs and Hector Carrasco steps in to pick up the save.

I think any Nationals fan bashing comes from people's observations of fans like you. I've never known anyone to use "PIECE OF GARBAGE" in every post they make. Do you have anything substantive to say other than how screwed you feel, and that you think Angelos is trash? I think your display of hatred toward Angelos is an attempt to hide your true deep-rooted homoerotic feelings for the man. Any other thoughts in that narrow mind of yours? Has is occurred to you that support for a sports franchise may not flip flop as fast as you're able to, because for decades all D.C. (I'm a D.C. native) had in the MLB was the Orioles? I think the amount of Orioles support in DC will fade over time, which will be accelerated by the success of the Nats, but it wont happen as quickly for fans with a sense of loyalty as it has for you. While the Orioles have lost their strongest pitcher and one of the best catchers in all of baseball, you attempt to compare that to the losses of "key" players like Nick Johnson? I'm sure Nick Johnson appreciates your support, but a career .268 hitter with only 42 RBI's is not in the same class, my friend. And just as you predict the Yankers and Jays to pass the O's, it's overwhelmingly obvious that the Nats will be left in the trails of Atlanta, only 2.5 games back. And by the way, the O's just took 3 of 4 from Boston and only trail the division by 2. But you know, you're absolutely right . . . they suck. You should look at the facts when you say the Orioles "can't win at home or on the road." The Orioles are 7 games above .500 at home, and 20-20 on the road. The Nats have a LOSING road record. The Nats 5-5 record in the last 10 is hardly impressive, and may your losing streak continue . . .

Geez JohnJacquesLayup, you accuse me of having deep-rooted HOMOEROTIC feelings for another man and claim I have nothing substantive to say. Besides, Peter Angelos isn't my type. AHH! HHA! Seriously though, let's look at this, that PIECE OF GARBAGE Peter Angelos does all he can to keep Washington D.C. from getting a baseball team for YEARS, when D.C. gets a team he limits the number of Nationals games that can be televised in Washington D.C. I guess it's no big deal that a lot of fans in D.C. are UNABLE TO WATCH A LOT OF NATIONALS GAMES, but can see ALL of the Orioles games? Nationals fans shouldn't be OUTRAGED that the only way to see every Nationals game on television is to switch to a different cable company?
NO YOU DID NOT, compare the Orioles injuries to the Nationals injuries. Yeah, Javy Lopez was a GREAT catcher during his contract year when he had a career year and got the Orioles to overpay for him. You FORCED me to go to ESPN.com and look at the numbers. This year, J.Lopez has a .278BA/7HR/22RBI. Nick Johnson=.320BA/8HR/42 RBI. Ryan Church=.325BA/7HR/28RBI. The numbers don't lie, R.Church and N.Johnson is more of a loss to the Nationals, than J.Lopez is to the Orioles. Eric Bedard had good numbers before his injury, but so did all of the Orioles pitchers before they started getting POUNDED by teams.
I believe a team that goes 3-12 over a 15 game stretch SUCKS, that was the Orioles record for 15 games before the Boston series. How convenient for you to hype the Orioles after they take 3 out of 4 from the Red Sox. You failed to mention the most important stat, the Nationals are currently 52-36 in first place and the Orioles are 47-40 in second place. You brought up the Nationals were 5-5 in their last 10 games. Why don't you check what the Orioles record in their last 10 games has been?

Not to get in the middle of this lovefest, but Nick Johnson should have been a star years ago. Calling him a career .268 hitter belies his value and his ability.
That said, employing Nick Johnson is like giving a scholarship to Ramell Ross. Seems like a great guy, might be pretty good, but you have to expect the injury.
The same could be said for 30-year old catchers, as well.

You brought up the Nationals were 5-5 in their last 10 games. Why don't you check what the Orioles record in their last 10 games has been? First of all, I do know the O's last 10: it's 4-6, one less than the stellar 5-5 of the Nats. You accuse me of skewing numbers, but make sure you throw Games Played into your analysis of RBI's and HR's. And as far as injuries go, the O's are a lot more banged up than our two major injuries. We just got Surhoff back, the ALLSTAR Roberts was seriously injured after an awkward play on the base paths . . . I mentioned our BoSox series because it "conveniently" illustrates our emergence from our slump, with all our injuries, against the divisional leader and defending champ. Thanks for engaging in a little debate during a pretty slow sports week (HR derby was sooooo long. I know it was an international version, but did we really need to see that Canadian go 0-10?) I'll leave you with this: O's attendance is down because we want to simply rub it in the faces of Nats fans that we don't have to go to the game to watch the game, thanks to our sweet Comcast deal Thank you, Angelos!!!

No, no, no. Nick is a highly skilled player whose value is not to be found in batting average. Dude has a .447 OBP and only some of that is fueled by BA. He's got skills and ability, but he just gets hurt too much. Kind of like JD Drew.

During the Nationals last series against the Mets, several people were outside of the RFK stadium getting fans to sign a petition to get ALL the Nationals games on television. I hope you guys who attended those games signed it like I did. Those people also had shirts that read M.A.S.N stands for MR....ANGELOS.......SCREWS the........NATIONALS!
JohnJacquesLayup, I'm sure you guys in Baltimore are laughing about the fact that Sportstalk980(Washington D.C.'s only sports radio station) broadcasts all the Orioles games, while the Nationals come on a station that is VERY hard to pick up. You guys should also be happy with the Washington Post's extensive coverage of the Orioles. But the TRUE NATIONALS FANS, are laughing about Sammy Sosa's career being over, the Orioles starting pitchers getting POUNDED, and the Nationals having a better record than the Orioles. We'll see what happens in the second half of the season.
I like to refer to the "Kandi Man" as Michael Olowo-KANDI-A$$!

As you say, we shall see . . .
