The athletic facilities thing is valid, but ponying up? I can see why chronically worrysome people might see something to worry about there, but this is the same administration that offered Esh a big extension after a horrible year - then sprung for a better coach upon realizing how strenuously the students would object. I think they can imagine how much worse it would be to lose our coach coming off of a final 4 plus whatever else JTIII would achieve in the rest of his previous contract. I'm just saying that when you combine a decent salary with some school loyalty on the coach's part, there isn't much to worry about. How is the Esherick extension an example of ponying up? It;s a perfect example of accepting mediocrity because the guy was cheap. We paid him peanuts -- I doubt even the $400k Thompson got -- and accepted that he sucked. The administration only caved after influential alumni -- probably more than students -- protested. I'm glad this influenced them to resign Thompson, but the Esherick extension is no example of an organization ponying up. Regardless, it's a moot point. They made the right decision and kudos all around. I'm extremely happy and if we can punch the facilities through, I'm much more confident about the future state of the program. The only other obstacles are an unprecedented offer to III (and not necessarily monetary) and more likely, the future of the Big East.

I read that one differently. I think the poster meant they signed JT3 for a new deal, even though they had just signed Esh to a new deal to which they were still obligated. THe "ponying up" part would be signing a second coach even though the first one had just signed a brand new deal. And yes -- it was some very influential alumni who changed that one, not the students. But I would guess student opinion added additional "fuel to the fire" so to speak.

True - more alums than students. I was a freshman back then, not really thinking of the big picture. I do think that the university is somewhat in touch with what the fans (students, alums) want, though, and I think that they could foresee the fans' perception of having and losing JTIII as worse than coasting to the bottom of D-1 with Esh.

"Chances are, according to estimates, it’s close to six figures annually." Well I'd hope so! Six, seven ... who's counting anyway? ***Nice edit. Did it go to press!?! haha

Ahh bloggers making ignorant statements...
Check back a few pages, others saw that number Barker produced and raised similar concerns that this blogger raised and others pointed out that even if these numbers are true they don't account for bonuses (which the blogger does not account for in his "shoe and speaking deals")

Two things about this: (1) JTIII may very well have given up more money in exchange for a promise on facilities; (2) his salary is certainly competitive. It is what Brady got after his first trip to the Final Four; it is nearly twice what Jay Wright is making at Nova; and it is very close to what Boeheim makes at Cuse. In fact, it is only about $300,000 behind Coach K. Using Matta is silly b/c I believe he is the highest paid coach in all of D1 (not sure if Donovan is higher). I think that, if the success continues, GU should be prepared to bump JTIII up to $1.5 or $1.6. But let's not get carried away. There are a lot of other more pressing concerns for the program and I'm sure that is what the bulk of negotiations entailed. At the end of the day, I don't think JTIII's salary will ever be a deal breaker, so long as the admin isn't myopic. The biggest issue is and will continue to be facilities. It can/must get done and we need to keep the pressure up and the donations coming in.

Also, keep in mind that a large portion of compensation is usually tied to outside endorsement deals tied to the university. As in Nike pays a huge annual amount to the coach and university in exchange for the rights to outfit the team. I don't know the terms of the existing deals but would suspect that they are certainly subject to renegotiation at some point, and III is certainly earning it.

This kind of view totally fails to take into account III's personal connection to this school. I was as worried as the next person about the contract not getting done, but after seeing Midnight Madness and his recruiting of Monroe, I'm convinced more than ever that his heart is at Georgetown. For some people, money is less important than the long-term improvement of--and pride in--the institution you represent.
If the facilities move forward, we will have III for a long time until MAYBE someday long off, he tries his hand at the NBA. But by then, half the league will be people the he recruited at one time or another.
