Hopefully he gets a deferred comp package as well that makes the 900k much more attractive in the long run. If he is a lifer, any deferred comp would easily make up for any short term pay he passed on.

This is awesome! In response to some of the "told you so's," I still think it's an enormous fallacy to say "The University did it right this time, so it must never be appropriate for fans or students to be active in expressing their interests." I don't think anyone would support the second half of your statement - I certainly would not. Personally, my only point was that it was also a fallacy to assume that public silence from the parties involved equaled disagreement or lack of progress. Amen, thank you. Can I also mention TIMING of the press release? These guys aren't fools. Right before homecoming... StPete's and SFHoya, you both owe me a drink.

Did we know this?
" At least two different NBA teams pursued Thompson in the offseason, but the coach's D.C. roots, an impressive returning roster and some top recruits kept him committed to Georgetown."
How different things could have been...

I recall vague rumors that certain NBA teams might have had some interest (Orlando and Memphis, if I recall correctly), but I don't remember any pursuit. It seems to me that his name might have been included on some preliminary lists of possibilities for these teams, but he never seemed to show up on any "short lists."

900K isn't going to do it long-term. That said, Barker isn't always 100% accurate. I hope ColumbiaHeightsHoya is right, and there is some deferred compenation or other arrangement that makes it financially feasible to stay. I know JTIII loves Georgetown and DC, but if some huge state school offers him twice as much money in a couple of years, it will will hard to pass up.

i'm actually pretty impressed we doubled his salary, but i have low expectations. I'm sure there are additional long term comps in the contract, but i'm very impressed by the school for stepping up.

GU has to have a lot more money coming out of the basketball program now, even after accounting for III's higher comp. If they're smart, they'll restructure the phone booth contract to get more upside.

I'm guessing that JTIII gave up some salary to have other issues addressed. Long-term, so long as his compensation is in the ballpark--and I think this does make him one of the highest paid Big East coaches--he will stick with GU. If he gets a practice facility (and eventually an on-campus arena), his level of success will allow him to make much more money in endorsements than he would receive in base compensation, even from a state school. Now, if he could succeed at a Kansas, for instance, then the upside is even greater. But I think JTIII understands the synergy his profile and background has with Georgetown when it comes to selling the program. If he gets the support and a respectable salary, I don't think he'll bolt, unless it is for a new challenge in the NBA.

Maybe more than the year before that, but we still lost money last year, right? And weren't we the only BE men's program to do so? I am also not sure how we can restructure the Verizon contract, as bad as it is. What leverage do we have? Tell them we'll go play in Lisner auditorium when they tell us we can't have a cut of concessions and parking?

Speaking of humble, I was just thinking how much JT3 reminds me of Pops. NOT!

On 980, Al and Pops went live to Barker, covering the President's Cup, for a discussion of the tournament. Barker started by saying, "Just wanted to congratulate you coach," alluding to the extension.
Pops: "well, I didn't see a dime of that damn money," and all three burst out laughing.

town05, you seem to be missing the fact that people have to actually assent to a bet to owe something.
Either way, I would have bought you a drink even if you had been wrong, but I don't really hang out with people who say I told you so on message boards.
I still see no harm in my having written DeGioia/Muir of my concerns. None of the wait and see people ever addressed the harm of people supporting an extension. This University has screwed up enough times to take advice from constituents.
That said, Parrish's response is idiotic. It was obvious from the day III was hired that facilities were a huge concern of his and that needed to be addressed before he would sign any deal.

Whew - and to think I spent all that time worrying about this. I'm honestly surprised he signed. All anyone cares about is money, right? Why would he take less money than some other coaches who aren't as good as him? It's not like he's loyal to the school or anything...

how wonderful would it be IF down the road we have a MULTIMILLION DOLLAR FACILITY on campus, a perennial NCAA tournament/possibly final-four coached team, and the ability to contend for the top recruits in the country year in and year out. . . . wait a minute . . . 2/3 is not half bad....one step to go.

My concern wasn't Thompson's desire to be highly paid -- it's that we wouldn't even pony up what he got. Or that we've deprioritize athletic facilities so much he didn't want to stay. There's certainly many folks on campus who will not like paying $1MM to a basketball coach (plus $400k in deferred comp to Sr.).

The athletic facilities thing is valid, but ponying up? I can see why chronically worrysome people might see something to worry about there, but this is the same administration that offered Esh a big extension after a horrible year - then sprung for a better coach upon realizing how strenuously the students would object. I think they can imagine how much worse it would be to lose our coach coming off of a final 4 plus whatever else JTIII would achieve in the rest of his previous contract. I'm just saying that when you combine a decent salary with some school loyalty on the coach's part, there isn't much to worry about.

I'd like to add one thing. Something that - we don't lose sight of -- but just to stop and reflect on.
A couple/three years back, Bill Packer said GU Basketball had become irrelevant, or something like that. We didn't want to hear it, but he was right.
For JT3 to come in and in three years totally turn around a program so that it is once again becoming one of a handful of premiere programs in the country - that is AMAZING! This is not UNC suffering a couple down years, or Duke, or UK or whatever. THis is GU. We hadn't been a top program since the '80s. We hadn't been a threat since '96. We hadn't even been a decent program in the most recent year or two.
JT3 started with very little. What he has accomplished is absolutely extraordinary!!!!! Two time Black Coach of the Year -- not Black HOOPS coach, but Coach of any sport -- two years consecutively. And last year Natiional College hoops COY. And a BET, BE COnf. and Final Four!!!
Ladies and gentlemen, we have died and gone to heaven!!!
Of all the sports teams I root for, GU Hoops is absolutely #1 for me. And this team is in the BEST possible hands.
Thank you DeGioa, Muir, Rienzo, Huggins, Pops.... and most of all, Mr. & Mrs. JT3!!!
