Another rating system easily seen is Sagarin on USA today. Has advantage of giving 3 ratings. Composite Sagarin, Elo chess which is biased towards wins and losses and Predictor which is close to what vegas uses and is based on total points for and against. Unlike KenPom not scaled to points per possession so does not give credit for pace.
For comparison on Sagarin Marquette is 1, Ohio State is 2 On Elo Chess Marquette is 1, Creighton is 2 On Predictor Wisconsin is 1 and Ohio State is 2
GU is 7 Sagarin, 18 Elo Chess and 11 Predictor
Kansas is 9 S, 17 E, 15 P Alabama is 21 S, 38 E, 14 P Memphis is 30 S, 45 E, 20 P Savannah State is 226 S, 243 E, 215 P IUPUI is 266 S, 299 E, 228 P NJIT is 325 S, 320 E, 323 P NC Greensboro is 332 S, 326 E, 332 P
Coming up Howard is 317 S, 310 E, 314 P American is 140 S, 96 E, 186 P
So hopefully all the experts are right and we are a little better than Alabama and Memphis and about as good as Kansas right now. Unless we really let our guard down we should be able to do well against Howard.
Also in top 40 of Sagarin we are with 5 BE teams, 8 B10 and 4 ACC teams In Pomeroy top 40 we are with 7 BE teams, 7 B10 teams and 4 ACC teams

SNY is not just in NY, that is why many of us make a big deal about a game being on SNY, ATT UVERSE has SNY in many midwest markets on their sporst package which allows those of us not on the east coast to see early Hoya games. Unfortunately some are on tape delay but still seeing a game a day late after avoiding the score is better than it used to be when only a rare game in November or December was available without going to a bar for a game watch.

While this doesn't strike me as being great, it is what had been suggested months ago. Moreover, if Navy and AirForce eventually join, it gives some additional credibility and potentially also some stability to the football side since if the football side can get to 12 I believe they can have a championship game which would bring in more revenue to the football side. On the basketball side, UCF and Houston are programs that have been getting better and the competition in the Big East may help both programs get better rapidly now in terms of recruiting. Also while they are not in basketball, I am sure that football members will have an easier time scheduling out of conference basketball games preseason with other Big East schools which will be good for Boise and SDSU basketball and alums on the west coast. As for DePaul as one of many Chicago alum, I look forward every other year to getting to see my Hoya's play near home. DePaul's glory days are far removed but they keep trying to attract Chicago players to stay near home. Perhaps one of these years they will succeed and rebuild what was once a dominant program that kept Chigago kids in Chicago. I suspect it will take someone building a different arena that Allstate so they can play somewhere closer to home. Perhaps someday the cubs will rip down wrigley field and build a dome. We can dream! For now the Big East lives and yes the contract will be as good or better than the last one and way more than the A10 or any other basketball only conference. Now perhaps we can get a decent on campus facility built. Perhaps we could move/rebuild the heating facility to the edge of the parking lot by McDonough but as close as possible to the Potomac and using federal green funds place a whole row of vertical windmills and the entire southern facing wall with solar panels. That would then open up the space behind McDonough and up the hill to Yates where a giant all sports indoor facility could be built including a competitive swimming pool and on its roof the track destination which the track team deserves. We can all dream!

I agree with Lic more meanery. Also more people buying hoya threads at the end of this year than now. Think we will be in the fight for 3rd or 4th place going into BET and would be better if we did not have road games at Pitt, Louisville and Syracuse. At least Uconn is home and marquette is both. Also should be toughened up for at WVa after dealing with chinese thugs.

I too like high rankings in Ken Pom early but like pash noted the past two years Ken Pom has biased his ratings until the first few games of conference play when almost all the teams become interrelated. This early the past few years, I have liked sagarin at USA today but it also is biased. Sagarin clearly states at the top when his ratings become unbiased. I have not seen the same clear posting on Ken Pom but do believe he commented on it in his blog last year. Will need to ante up my $20 soon as I am missing the tempo free breakdowns and while hoya prospectus is excellent it does not replace Ken Pom.

Both Thompson and Clark are currently averaging 2.5 threes per game. It they each drop by 1 three pointer to 1.5 threes per game, Clark ends up as #2 and Thompson ends up at #11 at the end of this year.

There is a limit on the number of coaches on the bench, but no reason team cannot ask to have control over who gets seats immediately behind the bench to prevent the Greg Monroe Baritone problem like at Duke and having a knowledgeable voice sitting behind the forwards/centers could only help! If Syracuse and UCLA can have more than 15 players on their roster, certainly we should be able to have an assistant coach sit in a purchased seat.

The real difference between the Princeton Today and the Princeton of 1989 was that 45 second thing. If you look at Hoya Prospectus analysis of most teams and the georgetown teams that run Princeton well, the scoring percentage in the final 5-7 seconds of the shot clock is exceedingly high compared to most other offenses. The extra 10 seconds on the shot clock allowed even more time for the players, guard and small forward types to move around the taller post players who could pass them the ball as they flashed to the hoop. Of course Princeton did not have an answer to a dominant center but if Princeton could deny the entry pass to the center then it was hard to get points with their defense. The offense now takes advantage of both the princeton high percentage time at the end of the shot clock when most defenders are tired of chasing their man and allowing mental lapses and the first 7 seconds of the shot clock when fast break layups are available. With the additional turn over opportunities of the Press, there is reason to hope this offense could have one of our highest shot percentage offenses ever, and if the rebounding continues to limit second chance points for opponents the defense could similarly be very good.

To put it in perspective Savanah State is 281 in Ken Pom, Jacksonville is 146 and Temple is 15. End of year RPI from 2009-10 and 2010-11 are SS 317and 258; JV 129 and 136; T 11 and 28. So yes comparing is not fair to Greg or Jeff or Roy but comparing this year Henry to last year Henry he put on a show. He was great so far this year and we were all hoping for it and now we have a little more reason to hope that confident Henry has arrived. So please don't rain on our parade. If we still see confident Henry this year after 4 more games then expectations for our team should have climbed significantly.

Great point you need to look at the right stat not the wrong one. Often times raw stats sound like they make sense, we tend to overvalue statistics when someone spews them rather than thinking about what they mean. Even having your offensive rebounding percentage be close to the other teams defensive rebounding percentage is usually a very good thing.

Added it up. Since January of 2010, Georgetown is 5th in appearances in top 25 AP poll. From January 2000-Dec2009 Georgetown was 27th in appearances in top 25 AP poll. From January 2000-March 2011 Georgetown in top 20, only syracuse, Pitt, Conn and Marquette from BE there more. Would probably be higher if only from 2004 to current but didn't have enough time to review individual polls so used site that cumulates by decade.

CBS has listing of best college big men including several in the Big East. With the exception of Yancy Gates at Cinci and possibly the UConn duo, don't see any who should dominate. Big opportunity for Henry!

I know it is basketball related on a Big East expansion that is being driven by football but I found the news that the Big East hired Jeff Hathaway on UConn President's dime to remain the head of the NCAA men's basketball committee to be a useful chess move. Not sure if I linked this right, but seems Big East is slowly but strategically doing what needs to be done!http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/story/15784369/exuconn-ad-hathaway-earning-1-as-big-east-consultant

I do agree that a talented 7' plus player goes a long way on defense, and it Sims can play his height this year with Nate at 4 and Porter at 3, Hollis at 2 and Clark or Starks at 1, then our defense gets a boost. Had we landed anderson we could have seen whether having a lineup of players all over 6'7" on the court was unstoppable using the princeton. I have always thought that if you had 4 interchangeable players with height and passing skills with a Center who could move from low post to high post and the 4 guard forwards could run back door cuts and give and goes from the front and sides of the court on each possession a team would be about as unstoppable as we have seen in college basketball. AS the KenPom numbers seem to suggest, if three tallest players are quite tall that goes a long way towards having a great defense.

I am not sure what could be done about basketball in 2014, but certainly in foot ball in bowl season 2013-2014 the teams could be required to play the regular season Big East games in foot ball through 12/20/2014 which is exactly 27 months from when they announced they were leaving. On 12/20/2014 they would officially exit the big east which would mean they would be ineligible in 2013-14 for the Big East BCS spot as they would no longer be part of the Big East. For this year and 2013, I suspect strongly that the Big East will have to honor their football and basketball precedent of how the BCS and Big East championship are run. One other thought though is that the league pays the refs salaries. While many refs may want to work for the Big 10 and ACC as well, there is nothing that would keep the Big East from hiring for a premium certain refs to work full time only for Big East games. A ref who is nearing the end of his career might enjoy a guaranteed contract for 5-8 years that would set aside an annuity now to which he would be eligible if the League folded as well as getting paid his regular fees and getting first choice for league games during the regular season. Such a referee would certainly have a vested interest to make sure all calls are for the good of the League which is guaranteeing their future earnings/retirement. I also think the lawyers ought to be going after with a subpoena every memo between Pittsburgh, Syracuse, ESPN and the ACC.

ITS ABOUT TIME, ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATE!!! No one on the board seems to be understanding that some of the relevance of Syracuse and Pittsburgh are the Market Size of their cities. While plundering and possibly destroying Conference USA is not ideal, getting teams with football and basketball with major television markets is exactly what the Big East needs to stabilize. While the Big 12 has some big market Cities the Big East has bigger cities and if we can keep the city of Pittsburgh with WVU and add 2 new cities, we should be in good shape. Would not be surprised if Syracuse and Pittsburgh eventually lose much of their relevance if the Big East does a good enough job. Does anyone know if there is a SUNY in upstate NY with bigtime football we could target? Sue Pitt, Subpoena ESPN!

I still believe JC suffered a concussion when he was decked in the ND game January and no one warned him of the mid court pick. Looking forward to seeing his 3 point stroke without having been dropped to the floor in January this year. Pretty sure from what I've heard that Jabril wouldn't let his teamate get dropped by a mid court pick without giving a heads up shout!

Is it just me or are all the sports pundits who are arguing for the rapid demise of the Big East employed by the television network which wants to pay Big East schools alot less in the next contract. I know Bilas is an ACC guy, but with the O'neill article as well, it seems ESPN is really pushing against the survival of the Big East. Sue Pitt, Subpoena ESPN.

Sue early, sue often. Preferably in NY where the Big East has its headquarters and where 3 Big East Schools pay millions in salaries. While the suit should be in Federal Court, a home field advantage still exist, and the last thing the Big East should allow is Pitt to have a federal court in Pennsylvania hear the case. Neither Pitt nor Syracuse should be allowed out of the league any sooner than their commitment allows. Interestingly, 27 months from now is December 20th. We should force Pitt and Syracuse to play in the Big East regular season in 2014 then drop them before the conference tournament keeping them from participating in a post season football game in 2014-15. Oh well!
