I thought Greg’s 3 was massive. Nova had just cut it to single digits and it felt like the inevitable run was going to happen. That shot ensured that second unit was able to hold serve while thr starters were in the bench for an extended period of time (I thought maybe too long actually).
But that shot kept the distance and then the starters returned within the next minute or so. Really great to see how many diverse contributions we get from this team while our opponent was basically playing 2 on 5 most of the night.

I would be remiss if I did not recognize a class move by Jay Wright pregame: he and Ewing were talking and then Pat pointed at the baseline. Jay shook his hand then half ran (as fast as a guy with a slim fit GQ style suit with the jacket buttoned can) to JTJr and spent a couple minutes talking to him.

With the late season swoons each of the last 3 years, it felt great to get Ewing's first win over a ranked opponent in late February coming off two losses. This is a time when improving teams should be getting better. This is a good enough win that I think we are almost assured an NIT birth this year, which certainly exceeds my expectations for this team.

He's a neighbor of mine and still very down to earth and charismatic. Only thing that annoys me about him is he walks in the building politicking to the refs. He just never stops with those guys, and as a result it seems like Nova gets an inordinate amount of favorable calls. Pat is getting close to the right balance on this front; still wish he'd whine a little more, but it's just not his nature.

Yet another example of a great game plan in a rematch game. Best team defense all year. Villanova thrives on higher percentages 3s taken right at the line and in the short corner; virtually all of them were contested and rushed. Hoyas dared Bey to shoot them: after making one he clanked 5 in a row IIRC and at the end of the game every time the ball came to him he hit potatoed it to another guy. Villanova is a surprisingly bad transition defensive team and the Hoyas gashed them repeatedly. I though Akinjo had a particularly great game - his (and others) D on Booth had Booth off balance all night. 10 points, 9 assists (that drop pass to Govan for the dagger 3!) and 2 steals is a great stat line. Students brought it big time. Loved it. Season ticket holders? Meh. I know it’s a 6:30 start but come on - if I can make it by game time from Boston you have no excuse for dribbling in with 5 minutes left in the first half. Don’t talk about a snowstorm: the streets were clear and there was virtually no traffic. Most everything was closed yesterday. Props to the team for using their own motivation to get rolling before the full crowd showed up. Once everyone got there the atmosphere was great. Why not make more of an effort to get there for the tip? Playing the second unit significant minutes together is starting to pay off. Malinowski’s 3 was a huge momentum play. Finally, the final score was not at all indicative of the game. This one was not in doubt from very early on and it wasn’t close. But it starts on the defensive end. I like how coach is starting to tighten the rotation. He's also found a second unit that works by hiding Malinowski's lack of speed and defense by surrounding him with an athletic, quick unit with plus defenders (Jagan, Kaleb, LeBlanc)

Didn't read through the whole thread, so forgive any repetition. To me, the biggest keys to the game were our rebounding on both ends and guys playing their roles perfectly (and executing).
Mac looked for his offense; Jagan played terrific D; Jesse worked hard to get it down low and attacked the glass; Kaleb did all the little things on both ends; Blair and Greg hunted threes; and so on.
Obviously, that's not always going to happen -- at least the "execution" part. But it's important that guys have figured out their roles. (Pickett is a good example...he didn't do things he isn't capable of doing. He didn't shoot well (so he wasn't among the guys that executed their roles real well), but he played his role.)
I'm not a big fan of the NBA-style second unit, although admittedly they played very well and held serve. I just don't think you need to take all your guys out at the same time.

Agree that Pat still needs to work on this are a bit more, but last night there was a sequence on TV where Mike Stephens got up in his face and was pretty animated. Pat clearly doesn't have the respect of the officials in this league just yet, but hopefully with time he will get there.

I can’t say for sure, but I don’t remrmber PE getting a tech yet has he? He may have gotten one last year, but I can't recall one this season. In Providence game last year. The Hoyas appeared to have recovered from the early flurry and built the lead back to five at the 15:24 mark, but two quick three pointers from Cartwright gave the Friars their first lead in over 20 minutes of game time. Ewing was assessed a technical foul on the ensuing offensive possession, and Diallo sunk two free throws before Bullock hit a mid-range jumper, extending the Friars lead to five. Pickett hit a three, but Bullock answered with two threes of his own in what would ultimately be an 18-3 Providence run. georgetownvoice.com/2018/02/24/same-old-same-old-mens-basketball-loses-eighth-straight-against-providence/

I think the energy we brought from the first minute set the tone for the game.

Why not make more of an effort to get there for the tip? I agree in general about STH. I have said elsewhere that the attendance of this group has been a bigger problem than the students. And, I fully agree with the late arriving crowds. I have attended games at Marquette (and will do so on 3/9), and it is striking how fans not only get to their seats by game time but early enough to sing the school song before the National Anthem. As someone who rarely misses a game, I elected to stay in and watch it on TV because the roads and sidewalks in my (hilly) neighborhood were covered in ice. It looked as if the temperatures would hover around freezing so conditions would not change. I might have simply walked the two miles to the station, but I have enough of a cold that I didn't want to risk getting wet if I fell. Even though it would have been awesome to be there, I do not regret that decision one iota. This morning the roads were still icy (although the improvement is in sight because the temps are rising pretty quickly with the sun out). There is always a difference between the suburbs and city with these weather events.

I get that a 6:30 start is tough (I pretty much have to take a day off to get there) but seems a bit more effort and planning could help. We had no Problems with entry lines either (granted we got there by 6). It just baffles me.

As an old retired fart, I drove in from Delaware a day early to ensure that weather would not be a factor and met another old retired fart at Clyde's at 5 pm to have some whiskey and a meal. In the arena right at the anthem. As a retiree, I can do this. Those who still work merely need to do minimal planning to be there on time. It ain't that tough! Even before I retired I was always on time, even when trekking out to the old Capital Centre in the good ol' days.

Great all around effort on both sides of the ball. If JP hits those open threes we really blow them out.

It is not hard. And, it would help alot if everyone were there at opening tip!

The Hoyas play their best when everyone can contribute, which is exactly what happened last night. We are not the type of team that can simply rely on our best players to get a win against a good team, we are too young or incomplete, so it takes a majority of the team to play well for us to win. Great job by all, but I would like to call out Kaleb, who has really carved out his niche on this team. Johnson always seemed to be a tremendous person, but earlier in the season I was not convinced of him as a player, but Johnson has been a key contributor in BE play. Also, for Govan, great bounce back game from his last Nova performance.
The atmosphere looked good on TV and I am happy for those in attendance, and of course the players & coaches, to get a vital win at HOME. We have been a below average home team so turning that around will help build up fan attendance and interest. It would be great to have all BE game attendances greater than 10,000 with a sold out lower bowl. Something to aspire to for next season.
I already believe in Coach Ewing's game-planning, but he impressed with his in-game coaching as well. A good example was when Nova called one of their last time outs after getting some good production out of the press. Coming out of that timeout, Ewing had his players execute their most coehesive inbounds play of the game against the press, which resulted in an easy basket. Even the commentators took note.
Let's not waste this win. Follow it with another great effort on Saturday.

I don't know if has been brought up before, but don't forget Johnson. He came up huge for us in this game. Must have had at least 2-3 offensive rebounds.
