This is actually the toughest matchup for us in the Big East, because Xavier is better suited than any team in the league to exploit our softness, suspect ball-handling and weak perimeter defense. This is a very good Xavier team. But the issues have always been the same - we are soft on defense and awful on both ends of the floor in late-game situations. We haven't done well in close games since Wallace was our PG. But you can't tell me if Chris Mack takes our guys for six months, they aren't playing a different brand of ball. This is an okay Xavier team. Okay enough that I actually thought we would win today.

But he is even worse than Campbell on defense. Hahahahah, no. And his lapses are all from a lack of focus and experience at this level. When he makes a mistake he makes up for it. That's what you need in a competitor. Sumner blew by him 5 times for layups or assists to layups. Mulmore gives us more on offense, but nothing on defense. On balance today it was a minus, although he did give us a glimmer of hope at the end.

Every single time Xavier drove the lane, the whistle blew, whether we fouled or not. It was frustrating to watch. And that frustration turned to anger when we didn't get to the line on our end for the same things they got to the line on their end. To me, that went a long way towards deciding the game Agreed. I just hate that. And, what can you really do? It's like the whistle is blown before Sumner even got to a spot. If you are going to call that in the last 5 minutes, the game will be different. Maybe have to make a scene and force the zebras to give you a T on order to call them out for their incompetence.

Up by four or five, Pryor on two on one break, throws the ball away. Team didn't score again until the lead was gone. Game tied late. GU on offense. Mulmore throws the ball in the crowd. There were several other such sel-inflected wounds that lost us a winnable game.

There is little to no help defense. Govan is limited right now; Not sure why your 5th year senior center who knows a little X and Os doesn't see the floor during crunch time. At least there'd be someone with size at the rim... Also, the team doesn't have a sense of urgency until the end of games at this point. Xavier was beatable. An elite PG away? I say GU is an athletic defensive-minded big away from being a very good team.

The most frustrating part of that game is I thought we looked like the better team. Definitely some bad mistakes and far from perfect but I thought we looked better. I hate Big East officiating and it was easy to blame it on our offensive approach in past years but this is something else. IDK if it's on III or something else, but the double standard on each end of the court is insurmountable if we want to be relevant in this league again. It's more than just the new rules, and it needs to change.

There is tons of athletic talent on this team. It doesn't lack bigs, nor does it lack smalls. It just is not being brought together well. Enuf said.

Final Thoughts:
The effort was better today and the team pushed Xavier to the final minute. With 2:31 the score was 72-69 Xavier after Pryor hit the 3pt shot. The Hoyas just could not get over the hump and thus the team is now 0-2 in the Big East Every game is big this season and there are no gimmes. 20 assts vs 10 a good positive though the team lost the rebound edge 42-36 Peak, Pryor, Derrickson lead the way in scoring 21, 20, 15 respectively The point guard position looks to be whomever is hot that day and today it was Mulmore with 8pts, 3 rebs, 3 assts At Providence is up next and Eagle54's prediction of 0-3 heading into the Butler game on Jan. 7th appears to be correct
Final Grade: C

Frustrating because that was a winnable game and Xavier is beatable. If the Hoyas didn't go cold down the stretch (until Pryor hit a couple threes) and with a few less foul calls, maybe they win that.
I really am having a hard time watching anymore solely because of the officiating, which is really taking the fun out of the game. Beyond awful.
This team is not bad. Unfortunately, "not bad' is not good enough and I don't see this team making the tourney yet again. Really not the direction I want to see for this program...

We have too many limited players. But the staff does not seem to be able to coach them up to correct mistakes and improve deficiencies.

The most frustrating part of that game is I thought we looked like the better team. Really? I had the opposite reaction. I saw Xavier as being able to do whatever it wanted, whenever it needed to.

I think, under the way officials were calling the game, I would give the Hoyas and coaches a B plus at least.

I really thought they looked pretty weak. They struggled to finish, we forced them into bad shots and they gave us a lot of good looks offensively. Outside of (what I consider) a very favorable whistle, I thought we were clearly better and not even playing our best. They really struggled to guard us without fouling, unfortunately they were allowed to. We still should have won despite the officiating and that is what is most frustrating, as we gave away too much at the line, missed layups and with silly turnovers.

Point guard, point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point guard! How can you watch this team and not think how good they could be with a good point guard. Are you watching Nova and Creighton? A good point guard is a multiplier. On our team he would set up Pryor and Derrickson and Govan all day. Coupled with LJ he would make us a monster offensive team. Notice how much better we looked when Mulmore played out of his mind? And how much worse we did when he didn't (or when Tre and Jagon were in)? I swear, if I see Tre dribble around all day at the top of the key or pull up on a fast break I will need a session with Lic. BTW, what is with those high arcing cross court passes? Cripes, defenses can stop for a drink while those passes hang in the air. That is assuming they aren't thrown out of bounds. Again, watch Nova and Creighton. Do you see their ball handlers make such crazy passes? This Hoya team is driving me nuts. Much more talented than last year's team but I'm afraid that we will wind up with the same, or worse, record.

I talked to a buddy who was at the game. He's a smart basketball guy and a VCU fan who just wanted to see a good game. I said its remarkable how we dont get the home court whistle like everyone else in college. He said yea that's because JT3 has no presence. He said when the bad calls happened Jt3 would talk to the refs the ref would walk away smirking and then Jt3 would yell back at the bench instead of the ref. I am starting to think these refs know JT3 is a pushover when it comes to this and we dont get teh advantage.

Xavier went on the road and beat a desperate team. During crunch time they scored every single time. They are real good.

I have seen numerous times when Thompson is in the ref's ear and you can tell he is steamed - but sometimes I think you have to force a technical at home to get the crowd, and your players, fired up.

Frustrating game to watch, those 2 calls in particular on Rodney were awful. Didn't feel like we were the home team for sure, but we have to start finding a way. I like the way Mulmore and Kaleb stepped up

But didn't you think today's game was winnable? Was Xavier THAT much better today? No doubt I think Xavier is overall a better team, but we could have won that game and didn't because of our late miscues, something that happens way too much these last few years.
