I appreciate the response. Here’s what you need to understand:
The people posting on this board are loyal fans. We wouldn’t be here—posting about this dreadful team—if we didn’t love the Hoyas. And because we love the Hoyas, we want better for them. There’s no glossing over the fact that the product on the court has been abysmal under Ewing. The record does not lie.
For many of us, that love is borne of our love for the institution that is Georgetown University, which makes it doubly painful to experience this level of losing. You say that you grew to love the Hoyas because you found Big John to be such a compelling figure. And he was. But much as the Hoyas are more than a mere basketball team to you, they are more than a mere basketball team to us, because they represent our alma mater.
There’s a disconnect here between Ewing the player and Ewing the coach. I wasn’t alive to witness Ewing the player (in his prime, anyway), but I understand what you mean about how compelling he was. But what is compelling about Ewing the coach? He’s the same man, surely, but that’s where it ends. He’s not winning like he was as a player. He’s not doing it in the face of ugly discrimination, like he was as a player. There’s nothing special about Patrick Ewing, college basketball coach.
Finally, another point about “fair weather” fans. It’s not as if the alumni have abandoned the team while the locals have been filling the building. Nobody is showing up, because the team is awful. You say that Ewing is “compelling,” but you seem to be alone in that. You talk about Dante Harris—if Ewing were gone and Dante is still a Hoya next year, would he suddenly become less worthy of your support?

If Ewing is gone, there is a very good chance that I won't be following the Hoyas and that probably will be the case until someone else (player or coach) comes through that door that is just as compelling. I still will be rooting for Dante but I most likely won't be all into the Hoyas basketball team like I am today. Today and for the last so many years, I was/am a fanatic. I grew up in Southeast, Washington DC; the roughest section of DC just before the beginning of the crack epidemic. I grew up poor surrounded by drugs and violence. As a teenager, I would go to Georgetown to get away from the madness. I was able to attend the upward bound program at Georgetown while I was in high school. When I went to college (Graduated from GWU), I took a few consortium classes at Georgetown along with Howard and UDC. Before going to college, I worked at Georgetown's Bookstore when it was on Prospect Street (this was when I first met Ewing at 19) Also, while I was in college, I even worked at Georgetown. After I graduated, I was able to get a job at Georgetown and I worked there for years. Even after I got my career going (accounting and finance), I came back to Georgetown and worked a part time job for years. After losing a few jobs, I decided to go into business myself and was lucky enough to meet my wife which we own a business together. With the service business we have, we donated to Georgetown for years. We've gotten business through the Georgetown community over the years. I have lots of ties to the Georgetown community. One of my jobs, when I was in school was at Dominoes down on Prospect. I used to deliver to the campus. Man I've done a lot at Georgetown counting back damn near 30 years. So nobody has Georgetown in their blood as much as I do and yes Georgetown is a special part of me as it has certainly helped me to get to where I am today and it has helped me to be the man I am today. I haven't been there in a few years (mainly because of Covid) but I suspect, when things get better I will be returning in some shape form or fashion.

FWIW I watched Iona-Sienna last night mainly because I love Pitino (I know, I know). Anyway he was quoted as saying that he wants to turn Iona into the Gonzaga of the East. Didn't get by Sienna last night but still is 11-2 in conference. Of course this is ridiculous but it just shows the mindset and convinces me that if GU offered him the coaching job he's jump at it.

When you really boil it down, Pitino is the answer for a lot of reasons. The likelihood of it happening is probably nil, but it would be a tremendous story and basically a guarantee that we’d return to a floor of competitive basketball and a ceiling of national prominence.

You’ll be missed … Most won't miss me and most will be glad when I'm gone. But thank you; I've made a fe friends on here. And to be quite honest, at the age I am now, I am steadily weaning (if that is such a word) off sports. I only have a few compelling figures left to root for.

What exactly is so compelling about Ewing bumbling his way through the last five years? Is it the confused look on his face as he screams at his players to move or rebound? Or is it his completely incoherent explanations for what he wants his team to do and what is going wrong? I will agree that it is somewhat compelling to watch this mess and wonder what pathetic mistake he’ll make next but I suspect that’s not the hook that keeps you interested.

Many of us have come to the conclusion that it's time for Ewing to go. We still can be honest and say we see him taking players aside and individually coaching them as they enter or leave games. You see a confused look because you are kind of ..whatever, I'll pull that punch. Chill, you'll get your way by season's end. You don't have to be a jerk about it. Let us root for a win today, and next game and next game.

But hey, if those of us on this Board who want to see the University hierarchy break from the Thompson family and show that they are serious about turning this program around in our lifetime Rick is your man. And could you see the national sports media going nuts over our hiring Pitino? What a headline: "GEORGETOWN SWALLOWS ITS PRIDE AND GOES ALL IN ON PITINO; DeGoia says,if he's clean enough for the Christian Brothers he should be clean enough for us".

Yea I know it wouldn’t be popular amongst the majority and fans and other constituents. I actually think the headlines would be more along the lines of “Pintino returns to his roots in the Big East to rebuild a crumbling pillar of the league in Georgetown”. What better school and conference for him to rehab his image and take one more run at NCAA glory? What better candidate for Georgetown to signal to the rest of the country that we’re making a clean break from the past and we’re still serious about winning? And on top, we’re a catholic school with a strong foundation that believes people deserve second chances after they make mistakes. He’d bring instant credibility with recruits and transfers and might help us retain a few of the guys in the current roster that are worth retaining. We’d back to the top half of the league almost immediately. And I say this as a proud Georgetown alum. But I know it’s basically a pipe dream. Even if Ewing is gone next year, I have full faith that this administration will do something completely uninspiring like hire Mike Brey.

I personally don’t buy the argument that some are peddling that firing Ewing will alienate the basketball alumni. But I think that hiring Pitino might actually have that effect.
I don’t want GU to hire Pitino, due to a combination of the baggage and the fact that it would be a stopgap thing. I’d rather see us go with someone younger. But I’d be lying if I said that I wouldn’t be intrigued.

The program will be fine with wins and a new appreciation of the fan base. Along wroth a more aggressive plan to get alumni involvement!

Hiring Pitino would make me sick.
I would probably get over it when we start winning….

All I really care about is if the hire can coach and can the hire recruit. You can't be Will Wade or Sean Miller but with the new NIL rules most coaches should be able to safely walk the line. Ewing is not righting this ship.

Ewing is not righting this ship. What would be wrong with hiring Pitino for 4 or 5 years? The guy is a proven winner who could right the ship and at that point we could hire whoever we want as the team would be a perennial top 25 team. You might even get Pat to buy into this as I think he and Rick are friends. I don't like things he did in the past but with new rules I don't think those issues would crop up again.

Wasn't Pitino the one that had the prostitute house on campus? Wasn't that one of many things he had under his regime in Louisville?

Wasn't Pitino the one that had the prostitute house on campus? Wasn't that one of many things he had under his regime in Louisville? He’s 69 years old, has no real ties to the area, and achieved the feat of presiding over the first basketball title vacated by the NCAA. He does, however, appear to be skilled at having sneaker companies funnel money to recruits. Yet his name keeps popping up here.

Note to self, feed mayonnaise to tuna, and tell Pitino to hide the cash under the deflated basketball on his desk, no one would ever think to check there!
