One other point focused solely on basketball: People assume Iverson might help - somebody mentioned him sharing his secrets (whatever that might be) - but none of us really know how he would be as a coach. Can he teach basketball? Does he like doing it? There are plenty of good players in sports who are horrible coaches and bad players who are great coaches. All I'm saying is that aside from recruiting nobody has articulated a basketball reason for him to be on staff. His game also relied super heavily on his physical gifts and when they disappeared so did his efficacy. Again, I'm not saying that he couldn't be a coach. I'm just saying I haven't read any support aside from sharing intangible secrets. Secret: be the fastest, most athletic player anyone watching you has ever seen. If only AI could bottle and sell it.

It's implied. It doesn't sound good to say I came here because Iverson went here. So I see that as tact. At the very least a Philly kid would factor in that your Idol went to Georgetown in 1) considering Georgetown 2) and choosing it. I mean how many Philly kids do we get anyway. Probably not many because it's not exactly close to home and they have Nova, temple and Pitt. And subconsciously or consciously you would calculate that I have a much better chance of meeting my idol if I go to the school he went to than if I went somewhere else. Which actually happened when AI came back to Georgetown and Jabril was able to meet and take pictures with him. There's a picture somewhere of AI, Hop and jabril looking like they just finished playing. Why would Jabril saying AI going to school at G'town factored in his decision to commit be a bad thing? We can agree to disagree on this.. Once I start reading about sub-conscious thoughts I have to concede.. Because it would imply a short-sighted value system if people like you took his words for face value and thought the main reason he attended GU because of AI. Nobody is arguing that it was the primary factor in his decision, just that it played a part. Which it did, or he wouldn't have mentioned anything

Have to say that it seems like the stars were always aligned against AI from very early on in his life. Born and raised in Virginia; father was not involved in his life; a racially charged community of law and judicial officials threw the book at him in sentencing, setting him up for close scrutiny and criticism at the slightest misstep he took. Just to be clear and fair, Iverson brought some of this on himself. He was immature and had too much thrown at him too suddenly. We have seen the movie before.

Just so I'm clear, the "stars" caused him to drink and threaten his wife and lose a lot of his money, but didn't prevent him from being one of the greatest ballers of all time, making $100M+, and becoming a huge star?

Money and fame aren't everything. You're missing the point of my post. Try again. I don't know how much of the Iverson story you guys know but I know quite a bit. I moved to the Peninsula when I was 15. Chuck and I are 1 month apart in age. Players on my HS team would go to a local school (Magruder) on Saturday mornings to hoop. Grown men wouldn't start playing for up to an hr because they heard Chuck was coming. He was 15!!!! Now imagine everyone treating you with that type of worship since around 12/13 but being almost dirt poor. Almost everyone in our age group that is from downtown newport news has a "Chunk spent countless nights at my house" story. Which is why he is so local to his entourage. There are stories that he yearly gave each member of his crew $80000. Then he also paid for everything they attended throughout the year. Mutual friends would say that if you walked into a club that Chuck was in told him you were from "home", he would open the bar to you. I won't even get into the Ann Iverson stories that still go on until this day. I'm not saying Chuck is the only person that had it hard but when you really think about someone with his background it's not hard to believe that he made the personal and financial mistakes that he made.

Money and fame aren't everything. You're missing the point of my post. Try again. You missed my point. Fame isn't just a blessing, it can also be a curse. There are plenty of examples of famous people who would trade it all for a chance to correct their wrongs, i.e. some of the problems that money can't fix. What is point of having all that money and fame if you don't have true happiness?

My point was that the disadvantages faced by Iverson seemed to be selective in how they negatively impacted him. Curiously, all of the hurdles he had to overcome didn't prevent him from working to become an all-time great basketball player, achieving great fame and fortune.

I know a lot. I read the SI article when it came out. I taught Iverson at GU. I've already read Kent Babb's book. I feel like I have a good handle.

Why exactly are we presuming that AI would just walk on to our staff? Does he even care that much about Georgetown anymore? Welcome aboard trillest. Nobody is presuming anything - we just need wildly speculative threads to give us something to do until November.

Great quote from his father!! I'm glad he didn't worry about tact or folks thinking his "value system" is off because he mentioned AI as a reason he gravitated towards G'town.. I look forward to seeing him play for JT3 & staff in a couple of years!! Congrats to both Tyler & the staff..

So wait, since we got Foster WITHOUT AI on staff, does that mean we don't need him as a coach for recruiting? We just need him to show up once or twice a year........
