Rutgers is a bad team on a 4-game losing streak, including a loss by 12 to St Johns at home. We have a week to prepare. No excuses for losing this one, period. It's a must win if we want to actually make a run for the BE Championship. Hoyas will be ready, I have no doubt. Especially given the South Florida experience.

Let's not write off Rutgers. This team is still dangerous at the RAC. Remember this team gave us all we could handle in DC last year. In addition they did beat Pittsburgh in the RAC this year.
That being said. This is a game we should win, but we need to come out every game and play hard we don't have that much of a talent disparity that we can take any BE team lightly.
Rutgers' defense is not nearly as good as it was last year 69th last year 121st this year. Take care of business we already swept St. John's we need to sweep Rutgers as well.

The RAC is deadly. The crowd is basically on the court. Very vertical stands makes the relatively small crowd feel much larger than it is. There is no off court space at all. The team benches are basically at the foot of a wall of histile fans. Wild place to play.

The thing that worries me about this team is that they are basically perimeter orientated which makes it hard to see which test of wills ill win out. If Carter, Mack, Seagears are hitting we could be on the edge of a buzzsaw. They are careless with the ball so I'm looking at that as what may be the equalizer.

People need to start realizing how good our perimeter D is. We dictate how other perimeters play.

3 weeks ago I was much more worried about this game. No road game is "easy" but this RU team has hit a rut and they are losing confidence quickly. I am interested to see their next game against UL to gauge how they respond to a big game in the RAC.

Hit the nail on the head, rock. Our perimeter D, especially the help, has been outstanding thus far.

If there's one thing we're good at on defense it's taking away the three. It's certainly possible that Mack or Carter goes off, but I don't think needing to shoot and make a lot of threes is the best way to beat Georgetown. Rutgers is very mediocre on offense and defense. We should win this one pretty easily.
The RAC is indeed a cool venue. Kind of a high school gym on steroids. If Rutgers ever got good (not holding my breath), that place would be jumping.

Should be a good primer for a team like Cincy that is perimeter oriented as well.

As of today, Gtown clocks in at 26 on Pomeroy (126 on O, 5 on D). Rutgers is at 103 (102, 122). On Sagarin, the teams are at 19 and 92, respectively.
Fun fact: we're one of three teams in the Pom Top 50 (along with Oregon and UVA) that have a triple-digit offense.
Like SHU, if they get hot from 3 we could have trouble on our hands, but our perimeter D has been outstanding over the past few weeks.
Stay focused, stay disciplined, take advantage of R's lack of ball control, don't let the RAC get to you, and win the game.

I'm sure we are gonna be a slight underdog in the minds of the people that do that sort of thing for a living. That being said I hope the USF experience doesn't let this team get complacent and we pull it out. With the way things have been going just going through a week without losing shoots you up the rankings no matter who you play. That would be good as well as we will eventually lose a game but if we are high enough we wont fall completely out..

It will be interesting to see what Rutgers team and fan base shows up at noon on Saturday. If Lville beats them by 30 and they are on a 5 game losing streak, it's a different game on Saturday, IMO.

I would be shocked if we're not favored by a few points. They're going to be on a five game losing streak once Lousville beats them on Wednesday. SJU beat them by 12 at the RAC. I'm sure we are gonna be a slight underdog in the minds of the people that do that sort of thing for a living. That being said I hope the USF experience doesn't let this team get complacent and we pull it out. The RAC crowd isn't as active as it used to be, but a road game in the BE is a road game in the BE. The next two (@rut, Mar) are games we're going to be favored in but they aren't SJU and SHU -- Pomeroy puts our odds at winning both games at only 44%.
I think that probably understates a bit how well we're playing right now, but still, the reality is that teams about as good as we've been playing teams that have been about as good as Rutgers and Marquette have been historically lose one or both games about 50% of the time.
This includes the natural inconsistency of college teams (laying an egg). I think if we bring it both games, the chances are much better than we win both, but it's been a while since we've had that level of consistency, if ever.

Stat geeks (pointing at SFHoya): by the numbers, is this JTIII's best defensive team ever? We are currently 5th in the KenPom rankings for AdjD. I think the 2008 team may have been better?

Yep - it's actually overtaken 2007-08 as of this moment. That team was ranked sixth with an absolute adjusted efficiency of 86.4. Last year, we were 7th with an absolute adjusted efficiency of 87.8. Fifth and 85.0 lead now. And may actually make it so III's defenses have been better than his offenses over the span.
