Hi guys, this is a recruiting forum and it's specifically a thread about a kid named Marcus Derrickson. COULD YOU TRY TO REMEMBER THAT FOR EditedS SAKE?!? This is spot-on. If you want to post about Joshua Smith (and, at this point, this is clearly wasted energy as Smith graduates in a month), there are other threads in which to do so. Don't clutter this thread with Smith postings.

I'm not sure how much speculation is involved here. Sufficient proof was clearly visible on the television screen to make an informed call about Josh's desire to improve his body and conditioning. Josh made some good progress between junior and senior seasons, which was nice. But that improvement also indicates that more progress could have been made with harder work. He just didn't accomplish what we all hoped he would coming into the program. Too bad. Biology may be factor in losing that last 10 or 20 or 30 pounds in certain cases. But any 400 pound dude who plays college sports can lose a helluva lot more weight than Josh did, regardless of genetic make-up. I think the biology excuse is lame and lets Josh off the hook. I'm very excited to replace Smith with Govan and Derrickson, two big men who have worked hard in high school to get themselves into very good shape prior to arriving in college. You're basing your opinion on what was visible on a television screen? That's the very definition of speculation. For example, if I were to base my opinion on your intelligence solely based on your posts (that I read on my screen), and I were to call you a moron, that would be speculation. If I had additional information, say, that your measured IQ was below 100 and you are receiving medical help for your below average intelligence, that would be more than mere speculation.

Not speculating at all. Sometimes you just have to open your eyes and see what is in front of you.

And now back to a guy that, clearly, has worked really hard on getting into BE shape so he can hit the ground running day one. Work ethic is tough to teach to people that don't already have it by the time they hit a college campus. The more guys on the roster with that quality, the better.

So is he good enough to push Ike to the 3?

I don't see a scenario where Paul White doesn't start now. Derrickson will play with Ike at the 3 sure.

Would anyone be surprised to see us go small in a pinch and go with Derrickson at the 5? I kinda like the idea of a stretch 5 who can defend the post while being anchored by white and Ike at the 3/4.
What I like most about this year's frontline is that we have much more flexibility then we did LY. Josh had major limitations, Hopkins could play either the 4 or the 5 and was a good defender/rebounder but was very limited offensively, and Hayes didn't play. This year, Govan is going to give us size and an offensive skill set in the post that we haven't seen in years, Hayes will play in every game and give us spot minutes, and Marcus should also see spot minutes at the 5 with the ability to step out to the perimeter and stretch the defense. Good stuff.

I agree EtomicB. It seems like he has been on an upswing, which is surely in part because of his better conditioning. I definitely think he could be the type who surprises us by being more ready than his ranking would suggest.

I definitely think he could be the type who surprises us by being more ready than his ranking would suggest. This is true and although he does not have the lift of Hopson or his rebounding ability, he does possess the heft and footwork to stay in front of centers to keep them away from the basket. So I expect to see the Hoyas going small at the center position at times during a game to give Govan and Hayes a break or give them a threat from the 3pt line at the center position. If White and Copeland continue to improve their rebounding then he should be just fine playing the 5 for limited stretches of the game.

I'm not sure but even with Derrickson playing the 5, I see few scenarios where the team on the floor could be referred to as small ball. We have the potential to have times where our team is 6'3", 6'8", 6'9", 6'9" and 7'0" on the floor and our shortest team next year would be 6'2, 6'3, 6'5, 6'9, 6'9. For once I see little chance we play small ball!
